Matthew 26

Edwards

Mat. 26. These things seem to be intended to be shadowed by what is related in this chapter: 1. That Christ is betrayed by pretended disciples. These are those that deliver him up to his open enemies. So it has been all along; antichrist is another Judas, who pretending to be the follower of Christ, is his worst enemy in the world, as Judas more incensed God’s anger than his murderers. So hypocrites in all ages are the betrayers of Christ; who, by a seeming embracing of religion, expose Christ to shame and mockery, as Judas with a kiss. And, 2. What should afterwards come to pass, that the clergy would be the chief persecutors of Christ, as the priests of the Jews were.

Matthew 26:64

Mat. 26:64

Mat. 26:64. “Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless, I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.” Christ’s answer to the high priest is remarkable. The high priest asks whether He be the Son of God. He replies Yes; but says He, “Nevertheless, ye shall hereafter see the Son of man sitting,” etc. He did not deny Himself to be the Son of man, though He preferred Himself to be the Son of God. He teaches the union of the human and Divine nature. It was wonderful, and what the high priest could not believe, that the Son of God should be arraigned as a criminal before His judgment seat; and Christ tells him he should see another thing equally wonderful, and that is the Son of man sitting at the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven, sitting the Judge of the world, and be brought before His judgment-seat. Nevertheless, though, “I be the Son of God, yet ye shall see the Son of man, sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.”

Mat. 26:65

Matthew 26:65

Mat. 26:65. “Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard His blasphemy.” Contrary to that law, Leviticus 21:10. This probably foreboded that the Levitical priesthood was soon to be abolished, their priestly garment to be rent, and they to be divested of the honors and prerogatives of their office.
