Matthew 10:17

Mat. 10:17. “But beware of men; for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues.” To understand how this comes in, and how the particle ‘but’ connects it with what went before, it must be observed that Christ here explains Himself in what He said in the preceding verse. There He told them that He sent them forth as sheep in the midst of wolves; but, says He, beware of men: these are the wolves that I mean. It is men, and not wolves, I bid you beware of.
