Psalms 50

BSASB

God appears in glory as Judge and calls His covenant people into court. He tells the sincere that He wants thankful hearts, not animal gifts to feed Him. He then warns the wicked, who talk about His law but live against it, to turn back before He judges.

Psalms 50:1

God Himself speaks, and His voice reaches the whole earth, from sunrise to sunset. The scene is a royal summons. Nobody on earth is outside His call, and the One who calls is both mighty and the covenant LORD.

BSA: summons (“to call out, to gather”): God is calling everyone together, like a king gathering people for a hearing. Mighty One (“all-powerful, having God’s nature”): The opening name stresses His strength before anything else is said.

Psalms 50:2

God’s glory shines out from Zion, the city where He chose to dwell with His people. Its beauty is not in buildings but in His presence. The light of the Judge is also the light of His perfect goodness.

BSA: perfect (“entirely flawless”): Zion’s beauty is complete because God’s own glory fills it.

See also: Psalm 48:1-2.

Psalms 50:3

God comes, and He does not stay quiet. Fire and storm go before Him, as at Mount Sinai when He gave the law. His coming is awesome and serious. This is not a gentle visit but the arrival of a Judge.

BSA: Consuming (“devouring, fiery”): The fire burns away everything false and cannot be ignored.

See also: Exodus 19:16-18; Hebrews 12:29.

Psalms 50:4

God calls heaven and earth as witnesses. His purpose is to judge His own people, not outsiders. Those who belong to Him must give account first. Heaven and earth hear the case like a courtroom audience.

BSA: judge (“to govern, to vindicate”): His judging includes setting right what is wrong and vindicating what is true.

See also: Deuteronomy 32:1; 1 Peter 4:17.

Psalms 50:5

God commands that His faithful ones be gathered to Him. They are marked as those who entered a covenant through sacrifice, as Israel did at Sinai. He speaks first to those who claim to belong to Him.

BSA: saints (“pious ones, faithful followers”): These are people devoted to Him by covenant loyalty. sacrifice (“offering, atonement”): The covenant rested on blood that covered sin, not on human merit.

See also: Exodus 24:5-8.

Psalms 50:6

The heavens declare that God’s judgment is right. Even the skies agree that He is just. The pause marked by Selah invites us to stop and let this settle: the Judge of all is perfectly righteous.

BSA: righteousness (“justice, moral integrity”): Everything He decides will be morally true and without bias. Selah (“a pause, a moment of reflection”): The reader is asked to stop and take in that God Himself is Judge.

See also: Psalm 19:1.

Psalms 50:7

Now God speaks to His people directly. He will bear witness against them, and He begins with who He is: God, and their God. His claim on them is a covenant relationship. That is why He has the right to speak so plainly.

BSA: Hear (“listen and obey”): Hearing God means more than listening. It means answering with obedience. testify (“bear witness, affirm”): He gives solemn evidence, as a witness in court.

See also: Deuteronomy 6:4.

Psalms 50:8

God makes clear He is not complaining that they have neglected the sacrifices. Their offerings are constant and correct. The problem lies elsewhere: they may be doing the ritual without the heart that should go with it.

BSA: ever (“continually, constantly, as a steady habit”): Their offerings never stopped, so the trouble was not neglect but what lay behind the habit.

Psalms 50:9-11

God does not need what they bring. Every animal already belongs to Him, whether in barns, forests or on the hills. He knows each wild bird. Nothing we offer adds to Him, because everything we have was His first.

BSA: know (“am intimately acquainted with, perceive”): He knows each creature personally, not just in general. Mine (“belonging to me, in my possession”): Ownership is total, so no gift can put Him in our debt.

See also: Psalm 24:1; Acts 17:25.

Psalms 50:12-13

Even if God were hungry, He would not ask us, for the whole world and all it holds is His. The thought that He eats bull meat or drinks goat blood is almost absurd. He is not like the idols who were thought to need feeding.

BSA: fullness (“abundance, all that is needed”): All that the world contains is already His supply.

Psalms 50:14

What does God want? Thanksgiving and faithfulness. A thank offering says that He is the giver. Keeping vows means doing what we promised. True worship is a grateful heart and a kept word, with or without the animal.

BSA: thank (“praise, confession”): The offering is an open acknowledgment of what God has done. fulfill (“complete, pay”): Vows are debts of honor to be paid in full.

See also: Hosea 14:2; Hebrews 13:15.

Psalms 50:15

God invites His people to call on Him when trouble comes. He promises to rescue them, and the rescue leads to praise. It is a simple exchange: we depend on Him, He delivers, and He receives the glory.

BSA: honor (“glorify, make weighty”): To honor God is to give Him the weight and importance He deserves. deliver (“rescue, set free, arm for battle”): His help can mean being lifted out of danger or being strengthened to stand in it.

See also: Psalm 91:15.

Psalms 50:16

God now turns to the wicked who still talk about His law. They have the words but not the right to use them. Repeating Scripture and claiming the covenant means little when life contradicts it.

BSA: bear (“or lift, take up”): They carry God’s covenant around like a banner, but only on their lips. right (“or authority”): God questions their standing to speak for Him.

See also: Matthew 15:8; Romans 2:21-24.

Psalms 50:17

Their real attitude shows in what they do. They dislike correction and throw God’s words away behind them, as something not worth keeping in view. Knowing the words is not the same as welcoming them.

BSA: instruction (“discipline, correction”): God’s teaching includes correction, which they refuse. cast (“throw away, reject”): They deliberately toss God’s words aside.

Psalms 50:18

They side with thieves and adulterers. They do not merely tolerate such people but join them. Our friends and company show where our loyalty really lies, and God sees it.

BSA: befriend (“consent with, are pleased with”): They approve of the thief’s actions and enjoy his company. throw in your lot (“are partaker, participate”): They share in the adulterers’ way of life.

See also: Psalm 1:1; Romans 1:32.

Psalms 50:19-20

Their speech is freed for evil, like an animal let off its harness. Lies and slander pour out, even against their own family. Sitting and speaking against a brother shows the harm of a tongue left unchecked.

BSA: unharness (“join, link together”): The tongue is hitched to deceit and works steadily at it. malign (“speak against, slander”): They run down others in plain view, even those closest to them.

See also: James 3:5-6.

Psalms 50:21

God’s patience was not approval. Because He stayed silent, they decided He was just like them, and tolerated what they did. Now He speaks and lays out the charges. Delay in judgment is mercy, not agreement.

BSA: silent (“was utterly”): His long quiet was complete, and they misread it. accuse (“bring charges, set in order”): He will lay out the case point by point, face to face.

See also: Ecclesiastes 8:11; 2 Peter 3:9.

Psalms 50:22

God warns those who forget Him to think carefully now. If they refuse, He will tear them apart like a wild beast and no one will save them. The warning is severe, but it is spoken while there is still time.

BSA: forget (“Eloah, the one true deity”): The name used here points to the one true God, whom they have set aside.

Psalms 50:23

The psalm ends with an offer. Those who give thanks honor God, and those who set their way straight will see His salvation. Real worship and real living go together, and God shows His rescue to those who walk that way.

BSA: honors (“glorifies, makes weighty”): Thankfulness gives God His proper weight in our lives. salvation (“deliverance, rescue”): God promises to show His rescue to those who turn to Him.
