Sections marked generated are written from the data on this page rather than by a named author. Everything else — the lexicon entries, the cross references, the manuscript readings, the counts — is quoted from its source unchanged.
Context — Genealogy of Ephraimgenerated
1 Chronicles 7:25 is part of a genealogical section that traces the lineage of Ephraim, one of the tribes of Israel. This verse specifically mentions Rephah, Resheph, Telah, and Tahan as descendants of Beriah, illustrating the family connections within the tribe. The genealogies serve to establish heritage and lineage, which were significant in ancient Israelite society.
Cross References
The Key Word — רֶ֣פַח, Rephahgenerated
The name רֶ֫פַח (Rephach) is a proper noun referring to an individual from the tribe of Ephraim. It is derived from an unused root suggesting meanings related to sustaining or supporting. In this verse, Rephah is identified as a son of Beriah, linking him to a notable lineage.
The parsing as a masculine noun indicates that Rephah is a male descendant, specifically a son in the context of the genealogical record. His mention here emphasizes familial relationships and the importance of lineage in the history of Israel.
How Translations Differ — measured against the Berean Standard Biblegenerated
This study reads the verse in the Berean Standard Bible, so the BSB is the wording every comparison below is made against.
Sentence Structuregenerated
The finite verb structure is not present in this verse, as it primarily lists names in a genealogical format. Each name is presented as a predicate, indicating the relationships between the individuals.
The structure is straightforward, with each name followed by the phrase indicating sonship, creating a clear lineage connection: רֶ֣פַח (Rephah) is the son of Beriah, רֶ֧שֶׁף (Resheph) is his son, and so on.
Septuagint Backgroundgenerated
The Septuagint translates רֶ֫פַח as ραφη, maintaining the connection to the original Hebrew name. This choice shows a direct correspondence in naming, preserving the lineage's significance.
The translation indicates a consistent understanding of the genealogical context, as the Septuagint aligns closely with the Hebrew text in this instance.

Charles John Ellicott1819–1905Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers(25) And Rephah his son; and Resheph and Telah his son.—(Heb. text). This seems to mean that Rephah was son of Beriah. But perhaps a son of Ephraim is intended. Rephah does not occur among the sons of Ephraim (Numbers 26:35-36). The word “his son” (benô) may have fallen out after Resheph. Otherwise Resheph is brother and Telah son of Rephah (the elder). Resheph, which means “arrow,” “lightning,” “fever,” was a title of the Phoenician Baal. “Tahan,” a son of Ephraim (Numbers 26:35 : “the clan of the Tahanites”).

CambridgeThe Cambridge Bible for Schools and CollegesThe treatment of different tribes is unequal in this chapter. In the case of Issachar (1 Chronicles 7:1-5), Benjamin (1 Chronicles 7:6-12), and Asher (1 Chronicles 7:30-40), genealogies are given and the number of fighting-men of each tribe is stated. To Naphtali is devoted a single verse, giving only the names of his sons. For Manasseh and Ephraim genealogies are given and their possessions are shortly enumerated. The mention of Dan is obliterated, owing to the state of the text of 1 Chronicles 7:12.
