I myself am going.’ And many peoples and strong nations will come to seek the LORD of Hosts in Jerusalem and to plead before the LORD.” This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “In those days ten men from the nations of every tongue will tightly grasp the robe of a Jew, saying, ‘Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.’”

The least of you will become a thousand, and the smallest a mighty nation. I am the LORD; in its time I will accomplish it quickly.

Psalms 102:22 Summary

[This verse is talking about a future time when people from all around the world will come together to worship and serve God. This is a beautiful picture of unity and harmony, and it's something that God has been working towards throughout history, as seen in verses like Genesis 12:3 and Revelation 7:9. As we look forward to this future assembly, we can start living out our part in it today by loving and serving those around us, and by sharing the good news of God's love with everyone we meet, just as Jesus commanded in Matthew 22:37-40. By doing so, we can be a part of bringing people together to worship and serve the LORD, and we can experience a little bit of heaven on earth.]

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean for peoples and kingdoms to assemble to serve the LORD?

This phrase suggests a future time when all nations will come together to worship and serve God, as prophesied in Isaiah 2:2-3 and Micah 4:1-2, where it is written that people will stream to the mountain of the LORD to learn His ways and walk in His paths.

Is this verse talking about a specific event or a general principle?

While the verse does not specify a particular event, it is likely referring to the millennial kingdom described in Revelation 20:1-6, where Jesus Christ will reign over all the earth and people from every nation will worship Him.

How does this verse relate to the preceding verses about prisoners and the proclamation of God's name?

The assembly of peoples and kingdoms to serve the LORD is a natural outcome of the proclamation of God's name and the release of those condemned to death, as described in Psalms 102:20-21, and is a fulfillment of God's promise to gather all nations to Himself, as seen in John 12:32.

What role do I play in this grand assembly of peoples and kingdoms?

As a believer, you are called to be a part of this assembly, to worship and serve the LORD, and to proclaim His name to all nations, as commanded in Matthew 28:18-20 and Acts 1:8, where Jesus gives the Great Commission to His disciples.

Reflection Questions

  1. What would it look like for my own community to assemble to serve the LORD, and how can I be a part of making that happen?
  2. In what ways can I proclaim the name of the LORD in my own life, and what impact might that have on those around me?
  3. How can I balance the desire to see all peoples and kingdoms assemble to serve the LORD with the reality of living in a world where not everyone shares my faith?
  4. What are some practical ways I can prepare myself to be a part of this future assembly, and how can I stay focused on the eternal kingdom of God in the midst of daily life?

This shall be written for the generation to come: and the people which shall be created shall praise the LORD.

Matthew Poole's Commentary on Psalms 102:22

When the Gentiles shall gather themselves to the Jews, and join with them in the praise and worship of the true God, and of the Messias. This verse seems to be added to intimate, that although the psalmist in this Psalm respects the deliverance of the Jews out of Babylon, yet he had a further design and a principal respect unto that greater and more general deliverance of his church and people by the Messias.

To the Lord Christ; for to "Shiloh shall be the gathering of the people," Genesis 49:10. And the kingdoms to serve the Lord] As they did under Constantine the Great, Valentinian, Theodosius, which three emperors called themselves vasallos Christi (as Socrates reporteth), the vassals of Christ: and the like may be said of other Christian kings and princes since, who have yielded professed subjection to the gospel, and cast their crowns at Christ’ s feet.

Adam Clarke's Commentary on Psalms 102:22

Cambridge Bible on Psalms 102:22

22. the people] R.V. the peoples. Israel does not return alone: its restoration will be the signal for that gathering of the nations to worship Jehovah in Zion, which ancient prophecy had foretold (Isaiah 2:2 ff. = Micah 4:1 ff.), and which recent prophecy had uncompromisingly reaffirmed in the teeth of appearances (Isaiah 60:3 ff.). Cp. Psalms 22:27. But did not the event, it may be asked, fall far short of the anticipations of prophet and Psalmist? They looked for a triumphant return of Israel and a visible manifestation of Jehovah’s glory, to be followed immediately by the submission of the nations. As a matter of fact the return was an insignificant event, and no startling results immediately followed it. The answer is twofold. The spiritual significance of the Return for the history of the world could not be exaggerated; and prophecy constantly combines in one view the nearer and the remoter future, depicting the eventual result, without indicating the steps by which it is to be reached.
