10 John 1:1–18 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made, and without Him nothing was made that has been made. In Him was life, and that life was the light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. There came a man who was sent from God. His name was John. He came as a witness to testify about the Light, so that through him everyone might believe. He himself was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light. The true Light who gives light to every man was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him. He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God— children born not of blood, nor of the desire or will of man, but born of God. The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. John testified concerning Him. He cried out, saying, “This is He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because He was before me.’” From His fullness we have all received grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is Himself God and is at the Father’s side, has made Him known.

Proverbs 8:21 Summary

This verse promises that God will give wealth and fill the treasuries of those who love Him. This wealth is not just about money, but about the rich blessings and spiritual gifts that God gives to those who follow Him (Psalm 37:4). When we love and obey God, He gives us wisdom, knowledge, and understanding, which are far more valuable than gold or silver (Proverbs 3:13-18). As we seek to love and follow God, we can trust that He will provide for our needs and give us the riches of His glory (Philippians 4:19).

Gill's Exposition on Proverbs 8:21

That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance,.... Substantial blessings, blessings indeed, as all spiritual ones are; and substantial grace, as every grace is; and substantial communion

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on Proverbs 8:21

That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures. That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance.

Matthew Poole's Commentary on Proverbs 8:21

Substance; substantial, and true, and satisfying happiness; which is here opposed to all worldly enjoyments which are said not to be, ; which are but mere shadows and dreams of felicity.

Trapp's Commentary on Proverbs 8:21

Proverbs 8:21 That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures.Ver. 21. To inherit substance.] Heb., That which is; that which hath some tack or substance in it, some firmity, or solid consistency. "Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not?" Outward things are not, but only in opinion, in imagination; in semblance, not in substance. The pomp of this world is but a fancy, the glory of it a conceit, the whole fashion of it a mere notion. Riches get them great eagles’ "wings, they fly away," without once taking leave of the owner, leaving nothing but the print of their talons in his heart to torment him. When we grasp them most greedily, we embrace nothing but smoke, which wrings tears from our eyes, and vanisheth into nothing. Only true grace is "durable substance"; the "things above" outlast the days of heaven, and run parallel with the life of God, and line of eternity.

Ellicott's Commentary on Proverbs 8:21

(21) That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance.—The work which each one by my help shall do will be stored up for him in heaven (Matthew 6:20), it will be as “gold tried in the fire” (Revelation 3:18), which will abide the trial of “the day” (1 Corinthians 3:13).

Cambridge Bible on Proverbs 8:21

21. I will fill their treasures] or, that I may fill their treasuries. R.V. The LXX. add to this verse: “If I announce to you the things that are daily coming to pass, I will be mindful to take count of the things which are from everlasting.”

Whedon's Commentary on Proverbs 8:21

20, 21. I lead — àäìêְ, perhaps better, I move habitually; that is, as the leader and exemplar of my votaries: for the purpose stated in the next verse. Righteousness — Rectitude. Judgment — Judicial or administrative justice.
