Context — Offerings for Priests and Levites
21Behold, I have given to the Levites all the tithes in Israel as an inheritance in return for the work they do, the service of the Tent of Meeting.
22No longer may the Israelites come near to the Tent of Meeting, or they will incur guilt and die. 23The Levites are to perform the work of the Tent of Meeting, and they must bear their iniquity. This is a permanent statute for the generations to come. The Levites will not receive an inheritance among the Israelites.Cross References

| 1 | Nehemiah 12:44 | And on that same day men were appointed over the rooms that housed the supplies, contributions, firstfruits, and tithes. The portions specified by the Law for the priests and Levites were gathered into these storerooms from the fields of the villages, because Judah rejoiced over the priests and Levites who were serving. |
| 2 | Deuteronomy 14:22–29 | You must be sure to set aside a tenth of all the produce brought forth each year from your fields. And you are to eat a tenth of your grain, new wine, and oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks, in the presence of the LORD your God at the place He will choose as a dwelling for His Name, so that you may learn to fear the LORD your God always. But if the distance is too great for you to carry that with which the LORD your God has blessed you, because the place where the LORD your God will choose to put His Name is too far away, then exchange it for money, take the money in your hand, and go to the place the LORD your God will choose. Then you may spend the money on anything you desire: cattle, sheep, wine, strong drink, or anything you wish. You are to feast there in the presence of the LORD your God and rejoice with your household. And do not neglect the Levite within your gates, since he has no portion or inheritance among you. At the end of every three years, bring a tenth of all your produce for that year and lay it up within your gates. Then the Levite (because he has no portion or inheritance among you), the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow within your gates may come and eat and be satisfied. And the LORD your God will bless you in all the work of your hands. |
| 3 | Nehemiah 10:37 | Moreover, we will bring to the priests at the storerooms of the house of our God the firstfruits of our dough, of our grain offerings, of the fruit of all our trees, and of our new wine and oil. A tenth of our produce belongs to the Levites, so that they shall receive tithes in all the towns where we labor. |
| 4 | Hebrews 7:5 | Now the law commands the sons of Levi who become priests to collect a tenth from the people—that is, from their brothers—though they too are descended from Abraham. |
| 5 | Nehemiah 13:12 | and all Judah brought a tenth of the grain, new wine, and oil into the storerooms. |
| 6 | 2 Chronicles 31:12 | And they faithfully brought in the contributions, tithes, and dedicated gifts. Conaniah the Levite was the officer in charge of them, and his brother Shimei was second. |
| 7 | Nehemiah 10:29 | hereby join with their noble brothers and commit themselves with a sworn oath to follow the Law of God given through His servant Moses and to carefully obey all the commandments, ordinances, and statutes of the LORD our Lord. |
| 8 | Numbers 18:6 | Behold, I Myself have selected your fellow Levites from the Israelites as a gift to you, dedicated to the LORD to perform the service for the Tent of Meeting. |
| 9 | Numbers 18:24–26 | For I have given to the Levites as their inheritance the tithe that the Israelites present to the LORD as a contribution. That is why I told them that they would not receive an inheritance among the Israelites.” And the LORD instructed Moses, “Speak to the Levites and tell them: ‘When you receive from the Israelites the tithe that I have given you as your inheritance, you must present part of it as an offering to the LORD—a tithe of the tithe. |
| 10 | Leviticus 27:30–33 | Thus any tithe from the land, whether from the seed of the land or the fruit of the trees, belongs to the LORD; it is holy to the LORD. If a man wishes to redeem part of his tithe, he must add a fifth to its value. Every tenth animal from the herd or flock that passes under the shepherd’s rod will be holy to the LORD. He must not inspect whether it is good or bad, and he shall not make any substitution. But if he does make a substitution, both the animal and its substitute shall become holy; they cannot be redeemed.’” |
Numbers 18:21 Summary
[This verse explains that God gave the Levites, the priestly tribe, all the tithes from the Israelites as their inheritance, so they could focus on serving God in the Tent of Meeting without worrying about material possessions. This arrangement allowed the Levites to trust God for their provision, just as we are encouraged to do in Matthew 6:33. By giving the Levites the tithes, God was providing for their needs and allowing them to prioritize their relationship with Him. This teaches us to trust God for our daily needs and to prioritize our relationship with Him above material possessions, as seen in Psalm 37:3-7.]
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the significance of the tithes given to the Levites in Numbers 18:21?
The tithes given to the Levites serve as their inheritance, supporting them as they perform their duties in the Tent of Meeting, as God is their portion and inheritance, as stated in Numbers 18:20. This arrangement allows the Levites to focus on their priestly work without worrying about material possessions.
Why were the Levites not given a portion of land like the other tribes of Israel?
According to Numbers 18:20, God Himself is the portion and inheritance of the Levites, setting them apart from the other tribes to serve Him and the community. This unique arrangement is also mentioned in Deuteronomy 18:2, where it is written that the Levites have no inheritance among their brothers.
How does this verse relate to the concept of stewardship in the Bible?
Numbers 18:21 highlights the importance of trusting God for provision, as the Levites relied on the tithes for their support. This principle is echoed in Malachi 3:10, where believers are encouraged to trust God with their tithes and offerings, and in Matthew 6:33, where seeking God's kingdom is prioritized over material concerns.
What can we learn from the Levites' dependence on God for their provision?
The Levites' situation teaches us to trust God for our daily needs, just as they did, and to prioritize our relationship with Him above material possessions, as seen in Psalm 37:3-7 and Matthew 6:25-34.
