1 Nehemiah 10:37–39 Moreover, we will bring to the priests at the storerooms of the house of our God the firstfruits of our dough, of our grain offerings, of the fruit of all our trees, and of our new wine and oil. A tenth of our produce belongs to the Levites, so that they shall receive tithes in all the towns where we labor. A priest of Aaron’s line is to accompany the Levites when they collect the tenth, and the Levites are to bring a tenth of these tithes to the storerooms of the treasury in the house of our God. For the Israelites and the Levites are to bring the contributions of grain, new wine, and oil to the storerooms where the articles of the sanctuary are kept and where the ministering priests, the gatekeepers, and the singers stay. Thus we will not neglect the house of our God.”
2 Malachi 3:10 Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house. Test Me in this,” says the LORD of Hosts. “See if I will not open the windows of heaven and pour out for you blessing without measure.
3 Nehemiah 12:44 And on that same day men were appointed over the rooms that housed the supplies, contributions, firstfruits, and tithes. The portions specified by the Law for the priests and Levites were gathered into these storerooms from the fields of the villages, because Judah rejoiced over the priests and Levites who were serving.
4 Numbers 18:20–26 Then the LORD said to Aaron, “You will have no inheritance in their land, nor will you have any portion among them. I am your portion and your inheritance among the Israelites. Behold, I have given to the Levites all the tithes in Israel as an inheritance in return for the work they do, the service of the Tent of Meeting. No longer may the Israelites come near to the Tent of Meeting, or they will incur guilt and die. The Levites are to perform the work of the Tent of Meeting, and they must bear their iniquity. This is a permanent statute for the generations to come. The Levites will not receive an inheritance among the Israelites. For I have given to the Levites as their inheritance the tithe that the Israelites present to the LORD as a contribution. That is why I told them that they would not receive an inheritance among the Israelites.” And the LORD instructed Moses, “Speak to the Levites and tell them: ‘When you receive from the Israelites the tithe that I have given you as your inheritance, you must present part of it as an offering to the LORD—a tithe of the tithe.
5 Leviticus 27:30 Thus any tithe from the land, whether from the seed of the land or the fruit of the trees, belongs to the LORD; it is holy to the LORD.
6 Deuteronomy 14:22 You must be sure to set aside a tenth of all the produce brought forth each year from your fields.

Nehemiah 13:12 Summary

[This verse shows that the people of Judah were obeying God's commands by bringing a tenth of their grain, new wine, and oil to the temple storerooms. This act of obedience was a way for them to trust God and support His work, just as we are called to do today (Matthew 6:33, Malachi 3:10). By giving to God's work, we can demonstrate our love and commitment to Him, and trust that He will provide for our needs. As we read in Psalm 37:3-7, when we trust and obey God, He will take care of us and provide for our needs.]

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on Nehemiah 13:12

Then contended I with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place. No JFB commentary on these verses.

Matthew Poole's Commentary on Nehemiah 13:12

Partly out of the respect which they had to Nehemiah, and to his command; and partly because they saw they would be applied to their proper uses, and not abused, as they had been.

Trapp's Commentary on Nehemiah 13:12

Nehemiah 13:12 Then brought all Judah the tithe of the corn and the new wine and the oil unto the treasuries.Ver. 12. Then brought all Judah] Then, when there was no other remedy. There must be a compulsory means, or ministers shall be poorly maintained. Quod si sustentandi essent de contributione populi, misere profecto et duriter viverent, saith Luther. If once they be brought to live upon the people’ s benevolence, they shall have a poor life of it. Once, in times of Popery, there was need of a statute of Mortmain, providing that they should give no more to the Church. But now it is otherwise; these last and worst times have seen the springs of bounty, like Jordan, turned back; which heretofore did run so fresh and fast into the Church. Our statesmen have ministers’ maintenance now under debate; and much lifting there is by a levelling party (not without a Jesuit to help them) at tithes and college lands. The Lord direct our rulers; and preserve us out of the hands of those hateful harpies. (This was written July 30, A. D. 1653.)

Ellicott's Commentary on Nehemiah 13:12

Nehemiah 12:34-44. the tithe … corn … new wine (R.V. wine) … oil] This is the tithe spoken of in Nehemiah 13:5 and in Nehemiah 10:37, the contribution of which was described in Nehemiah 12:44-47. unto the treasuries] The same word in the Hebrew as that rendered ‘treasures’ in Nehemiah 12:44; and it might here be rendered ‘for (or, as) treasures,’ i.e. to be stored. But the sense in the English version is preferable, so also LXX. εἰςτοὺςθησαυρούς, Vulg. ‘in horrea:’ and it occurs with the same meaning in Malachi 3:10, which aptly illustrates the present passage.

Whedon's Commentary on Nehemiah 13:12

12. Then brought all Judah the tithe — No doubt the words of the prophet Malachi, (Malachi 3:10,) as well as those of the governor, were instrumental in bringing about this result.
