14Your wives, your young children, and your livestock may remain in the land that Moses gave you on this side of the Jordan. But all your mighty men of valor must be armed for battle to cross over ahead of your brothers and help them,
15until the LORD gives them rest as He has done for you, and your brothers also possess the land that the LORD your God is giving them. Joshua 1:14 Summary
This verse is telling the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh that they can leave their families and livestock on the east side of the Jordan, but the strong and brave warriors need to cross over and help their brothers in battle. This is so that all the tribes can take possession of the land that God is giving them, as promised in Joshua 1:15 and Deuteronomy 3:20. Just like the Israelites, we can trust in God's power and promises to give us rest and security, as seen in Psalm 23:1-4 and Matthew 11:28-30. By trusting in God and standing strong in the face of challenges, we can be a source of help and support to those around us, just like the 'mighty men of valor' in this verse.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the significance of the instruction for the wives, young children, and livestock to remain on the east side of the Jordan?
This instruction allows the families to remain in a safe location while the men of valor go to battle, as seen in Joshua 1:14, and is a fulfillment of the promise made in Deuteronomy 3:20, where Moses tells the Reubenites, Gadites, and half-tribe of Manasseh that they can return to their homes after helping the other tribes take possession of their land.
Who are the 'mighty men of valor' mentioned in this verse?
The 'mighty men of valor' refer to the strong and brave warriors from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, as mentioned in Joshua 1:14, who are tasked with crossing over the Jordan to help their brothers in battle, in accordance with the command given by Moses in Numbers 32:20-22.
What is the ultimate goal for the tribes that are helping their brothers in battle?
The ultimate goal is for all the tribes to possess the land that the Lord their God is giving them, as stated in Joshua 1:15, and then return to their own land and take possession of their inheritance, as promised in Joshua 1:15 and Deuteronomy 3:20.
How does this verse relate to the concept of rest in the Bible?
The concept of rest in the Bible, as seen in Joshua 1:13 and Hebrews 4:9-11, refers to a state of spiritual and physical rest, where God's people can live in peace and security, and this verse is a reminder that the Lord will give rest to all the tribes, just as He has done for the tribes that are already settled, as seen in Joshua 1:15.
