Job 22:28 Summary

[This verse means that when we make decisions that are in line with God's will, He will help us carry them out, and we will have His guidance and wisdom in our lives, as seen in Psalm 37:23-24 where it says the steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord. It's a promise that God will be with us and help us, even when things seem uncertain, as stated in Isaiah 41:10 where it says we should not be afraid because God is with us. To experience this, we need to delight in God and seek His face, as stated in the preceding verse, and trust in His goodness and love for us, as seen in Romans 8:28 where it says all things work together for our good.]

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean for my decisions to be carried out?

This means that when we make decisions in line with God's will, He will bring them to pass, as seen in Proverbs 16:3 where it says to commit our works to the Lord and our plans will be established.

How can I have light shine on my ways?

Having light shine on our ways means having God's guidance and wisdom in our lives, which comes from reading and obeying His word, as stated in Psalm 119:105, where it says His word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path.

Is this verse promising success in every area of my life?

While this verse does promise that our decisions will be carried out and we will have light on our ways, it's not a guarantee of success in every area of life, but rather a promise of God's presence and guidance, as seen in Jeremiah 29:11 where it says God has plans to prosper us, not to harm us.

What is the condition for this promise to be fulfilled?

The condition for this promise is to delight in the Almighty and lift up our face to God, as stated in Job 22:26, and to pray to Him and fulfill our vows, as stated in Job 22:27, which is in line with the principle stated in James 4:8 to draw near to God and He will draw near to us.

Gill's Exposition on Job 22:28

Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee,.... Strictly speaking, this is only true of God, whose decrees are unfrustrable, whose counsel shall stand, and the thoughts of

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on Job 22:28

Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways. Decree - purpose or resolve on a thing, and thy resolution shall be realized. Light - success.

Matthew Poole's Commentary on Job 22:28

Thy purposes and designs shall not be disappointed, but effected and ratified by God; which is a great satisfaction. In all thy counsels, and courses, and actions, God shall give thee the light of his direction and governance, and of comfort and success; and thou shalt not be in such a dark, and doubtful, and perplexed condition as now thou art.

Trapp's Commentary on Job 22:28

Job 22:28 Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.Ver. 28. Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee] God will be better to thee than thy prayers; and prosper all thy counsels, effect thy designs. The ungodly are not so, as is to be seen in those revolted Israelites, Judges 2:1-3, in King Saul, and in our King John. Or if they have their designs, it is for a further mischief to them. As, if the godly be crossed, it is in mercy; like as the story is told of our Queen Isabel, that being to repass from Zealand into England with an army, they had all been utterly cast away had she come unto the port intended, being there expected by her enemies. But Providence, against her will, brought her to another place, where she safely landed. The like is reported of Bishop Jewel, that being sought for by the Popish persecutors, he had been caught, but that, going to London, he lost his way (Mr Clark in his Life, p. 262). And the light shall shine upon thy ways] That is to say, God will inspire thee with good counsel and direction in all thine affairs (Diod.), and turn thine ill-counsels into good unto thee (as the heathens thought Minerva did to her Athenians, and as the Romans fancied of their goddess Vibilia, that she set them in their right way when they were wandering), or will shine over them with his blessing, contrary to thy complaint, Job 19:8.

Ellicott's Commentary on Job 22:28

(28) Thou shalt also decree a thing.—As, for instance, in the memorable case of Abraham’s intercession for Sodom, to which there is not improbably an allusion here.

Adam Clarke's Commentary on Job 22:28

Verse 28. Thou shalt also decree a thing] Whatsoever thou purposest in his strength, thou shalt be enabled to accomplish.

Cambridge Bible on Job 22:28

21–30. Eliphaz exhorts Job to reconcile himself with God; assuring him of restoration and great felicity if he will do so. The passage consists of two parts, first, a series of exhortations, each of which is accompanied by a promise (Job 22:21-25); and second, a series of great promises simply (Job 22:26-30). The exhortations are: (1) that Job should reconcile himself with God and receive His words into his heart—thus should he be in peace and good would come to him (Job 22:21-22); (2) that he should put away his evil—then should he be restored (Job 22:23); (3) that he should set his heart no more on earthly treasure, but fling it to the dust and among the pebbles of the brooks—then should the Almighty be his treasure (Job 22:24-25). The promises are: (1) that, delighting himself in the Almighty, he would be able to lift up his face to God in confidence, unashamed by afflictions (Job 22:26); (2) he would pray unto God with the assurance of being heard, and the vows which he made to God when presenting his request he would have cause to pay, his request being fulfilled (Job 22:27); (3) his purposes in regard to the future would stand and be realized, for the light of God would be on his ways (Job 22:28); (4) any casting down that might happen to him would speedily be turned by God into up-raising, because of his meekness and humility (Job 22:29); and finally, even others who had incurred guilt would be saved through his availing prayer (Job 22:30).

Barnes' Notes on Job 22:28

Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee - Thou shalt form a purpose or plan, and it shall not be frustrated.

Whedon's Commentary on Job 22:28

b. His prayers shall prevail with God, not only on his own behalf, but on the behalf of others; an unconscious prediction of the final offices Job was called to fulfil, Job 22:26-30.28.
