15Therefore this is what the LORD says about the prophets who prophesy in My name: I did not send them, yet they say, ‘No sword or famine will touch this land.’ By sword and famine these very prophets will meet their end! 16And the people to whom they prophesy will be thrown into the streets of Jerusalem because of famine and sword. There will be no one to bury them or their wives, their sons or their daughters. I will pour out their own evil upon them.Cross References

Jeremiah 14:14 Summary
[This verse, Jeremiah 14:14, is a warning from God about prophets who claim to speak for Him but are actually speaking lies. These false prophets are not sent by God and are speaking from their own imaginations, as seen in Jeremiah 23:16. We must be careful to seek truth from God's Word, the Bible, and not follow after false teachings or messages that do not align with Scripture, just like the Bereans in Acts 17:11. By doing so, we can avoid the dangers of following false prophets and instead find wisdom and guidance from God Himself, as promised in Proverbs 3:5-6.]
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean for prophets to prophesy lies in God's name?
According to Jeremiah 14:14, these prophets are speaking falsely on behalf of God, claiming He has spoken to them when He has not, similar to the situation described in Deuteronomy 18:20 where a prophet speaks in the name of other gods or gives a message that does not come to pass.
How can we distinguish between true and false prophets?
The Bible teaches that true prophets will speak in accordance with God's Word and their messages will come to pass, as seen in Deuteronomy 18:22, whereas false prophets will speak lies and their messages will not come to pass, as seen in Jeremiah 14:14-15.
What is the consequence of following false prophets?
According to Jeremiah 14:15-16, those who follow false prophets will face severe judgment, including sword and famine, because they have rejected God's true Word and followed after lies, similar to the warning given in Matthew 7:15.
Can God use false prophets to accomplish His purposes?
While God is sovereign and can use any situation for His purposes, as seen in Romans 8:28, Jeremiah 14:14 emphasizes that He does not send or appoint false prophets, and their messages are considered worthless divination and delusion, highlighting the importance of seeking truth from God's Word in Jeremiah 29:13.

- What does it mean for me to 'prophesy out of the futility and delusion of my own mind', and how can I avoid this by seeking God's guidance in Psalm 119:105?
