Context — The Captivity of Ephraim
6a spirit of justice to him who sits in judgment, and a strength to those who repel the onslaught at the gate.
7These also stagger from wine and stumble from strong drink: Priests and prophets reel from strong drink and are befuddled by wine. They stumble because of strong drink, muddled in their visions and stumbling in their judgments. 8For all their tables are covered with vomit; there is not a place without filth.Cross References

Isaiah 28:6 Summary
Isaiah 28:6 is a promise that God will give His people the wisdom and strength they need to make good decisions and stand firm against challenges. This verse reminds us that God is our helper and protector, and that He will give us the 'spirit of justice' we need to live righteous lives, as seen in Micah 6:8, where we are called to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God. By trusting in God's power and guidance, we can face any onslaught that comes our way, just like the psalmist in Psalm 23:4, who trusts in God's presence and protection even in the darkest valleys.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does 'a spirit of justice' mean in Isaiah 28:6?
A spirit of justice refers to the Holy Spirit's work in guiding and empowering leaders to make fair and righteous decisions, as seen in Isaiah 11:2, where the Spirit of the Lord rests on the Messiah, giving Him wisdom and justice.
Who are the ones 'sitting in judgment' in this verse?
Those sitting in judgment are likely leaders or officials who are responsible for making decisions and governing God's people, similar to the judges in the book of Judges, such as Deborah in Judges 4:4-5.
What kind of 'onslaught' is being referred to in this verse?
The onslaught at the gate likely refers to a military attack or a time of spiritual assault, where God's people are being threatened or pressured, and the strength provided by God is necessary to repel the attack, as seen in Psalm 121:1-2, where God is the helper and protector of His people.
How does this verse relate to the rest of the chapter?
This verse stands in contrast to the description of the drunken priests and prophets in Isaiah 28:7-8, highlighting the difference between those who are empowered by God's Spirit and those who are controlled by their own fleshly desires, as seen in Ephesians 5:18, where believers are commanded to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
