And he said, Far be it from me that I should do so: the man in whose hand the cup is found, he shall be my bondman; but as for you, get you up in peace unto your father.
Then he said, Far be it from me to do so: but the man who had my cup will be my servant; and you may go back to your father in peace.
“I wouldn't do anything like that!” Joseph replied. “Only the man who was found with the cup will become my slave. The rest of you are free to return to your father.”
But he answered, God forbid, that I should doe so, but the man, with whome the cuppe is founde, he shalbe my seruant, and go ye in peace vnto your father.
and he saith, 'Far be it from me to do this; the man in whose hand the cup hath been found, he becometh my servant; and ye, go ye up in peace unto your father.'
He said, “Far be it from me that I should do so. The man in whose hand the cup is found, he will be my slave; but as for you, go up in peace to your father.”
And he said, Far be it from me that I should do so: the man in whose hand the cup is found, he shall be my servant; and as for you, go in peace to your father.
Joseph answered: God forbid that I should do so: he that stole the cup, he shall be my bondman: and go you away free to your father.
But Joseph replied, “No, I could never do anything like that. Only the man in whose sack the cup was found will become my slave. The rest of you can return to your father peacefully.”
But Joseph said, “No way. I don’t want to punish all of you like that. The man that had my cup in his bag, he is the only one that has to become my work-man. The rest of you mob, you can go home to your father, and I will not make any trouble for you.”

Genesis 44:17 Summary
[In this verse, Joseph shows us what it means to be fair and compassionate. He decides to spare his brothers and only keep the one who did something wrong as a slave. This teaches us about God's character, who is also fair and loving, as seen in Psalm 103:8. Joseph's actions also show us the importance of trusting in God's plan and waiting for His timing, just like it says in Proverbs 3:5-6.]
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did Joseph decide to spare the brothers and only keep the one who was found with the cup as a slave?
Joseph's decision was likely a test of his brothers' character, to see if they would abandon the guilty brother or take responsibility for his actions, as seen in Genesis 44:17, and also to fulfill the prophecy in Genesis 37:26-27 where Joseph's brothers would bow down to him.
What can we learn from Joseph's response to his brothers in this verse?
We can learn about Joseph's compassion and fairness, as he spares the innocent brothers and shows mercy, similar to God's character in Psalm 103:8, which says God is 'slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness'
How does this verse relate to the concept of justice and mercy in the Bible?
This verse shows a balance between justice, where the guilty brother is held accountable, and mercy, where the innocent brothers are spared, reflecting the biblical principle in Micah 6:8 to 'do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God'
What can we infer about Joseph's faith and trust in God from his response in this verse?
Joseph's response suggests that he trusts in God's sovereignty and timing, and is willing to wait for God's plan to unfold, similar to the trust expressed in Proverbs 3:5-6, which says to 'trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding'

- In what ways can I show mercy and compassion to those around me, just as Joseph showed to his brothers?
- What are some areas in my life where I need to trust in God's sovereignty and timing, rather than trying to take control myself?
- How can I balance justice and mercy in my own relationships and interactions with others, as seen in this verse?
