2 Ezra 6:14 So the Jewish elders built and prospered through the prophesying of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah son of Iddo. They finished building according to the command of the God of Israel and the decrees of Cyrus, Darius, and Artaxerxes, kings of Persia.
3 Zechariah 3:1–4 Then the angel showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, with Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. And the LORD said to Satan: “The LORD rebukes you, Satan! Indeed, the LORD, who has chosen Jerusalem, rebukes you! Is not this man a firebrand snatched from the fire?” Now Joshua was dressed in filthy garments as he stood before the angel. So the angel said to those standing before him, “Take off his filthy clothes!” Then he said to Joshua, “See, I have removed your iniquity, and I will clothe you with splendid robes.”

I will overturn chariots and their riders; horses and their riders will fall, each by the sword of his brother. So the people feared the LORD. Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, delivered the message of the LORD to the people: “I am with you,” declares the LORD. So the LORD stirred the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, as well as the spirit of all the remnant of the people. Then you will know that the LORD of Hosts has sent me to you.

Ezra 5:2 Summary

This verse, Ezra 5:2, tells us that Zerubbabel and Jeshua started rebuilding the temple in Jerusalem, and they had the help of God's prophets. This shows us that when we want to do something big for God, we need to work together with others and listen to God's guidance, just like in 1 Corinthians 3:16-17. The prophets helped Zerubbabel and Jeshua stay focused on God's plan, and we can learn from their example by reading and applying God's Word in our own lives, as encouraged in Psalm 119:105 and Matthew 4:4. By working together and seeking God's guidance, we can accomplish great things for His kingdom.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who were the prophets of God that helped Zerubbabel and Jeshua?

The prophets of God mentioned in Ezra 5:2 likely included Haggai and Zechariah, who are mentioned in the previous verse, Ezra 5:1, as prophesying to the Jews in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, who was over them, similar to how prophets were used by God in Ezekiel 37:1-14 to guide His people.

What does it mean to rebuild the house of God in Jerusalem?

Rebuilding the house of God in Jerusalem, as mentioned in Ezra 5:2, refers to the physical reconstruction of the temple, which was a symbol of God's presence among His people, as seen in 1 Kings 8:1-66, and also represents the spiritual restoration of God's people, as prophesied in Isaiah 61:4.

Why was it important for Zerubbabel and Jeshua to have the prophets with them?

Having the prophets of God with them, as stated in Ezra 5:2, was crucial for Zerubbabel and Jeshua because the prophets provided spiritual guidance and encouragement, helping them to stay focused on God's plan and purpose, as exemplified in Nehemiah 9:30 and Isaiah 30:21.

How does this verse relate to the broader context of Ezra 5?

Ezra 5:2 is part of a larger narrative about the rebuilding of the temple, and this verse specifically highlights the role of Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the prophets in initiating the project, which is then followed by questions and challenges from the regional governor, as seen in Ezra 5:3-4, and ultimately leads to a demonstration of God's sovereignty and provision, as seen in Ezra 6:1-12.

Reflection Questions

  1. What role does God's presence play in our lives, and how can we invite His presence to guide and empower us, just like the prophets guided Zerubbabel and Jeshua?
  2. How can we, like Zerubbabel and Jeshua, take initiative to rebuild and restore the spiritual foundations in our own lives and communities, with the help of God's Word and His people?
  3. In what ways can we seek the guidance and encouragement of God's prophets, as represented by Scripture and the Holy Spirit, to stay focused on God's plan and purpose for our lives?
  4. What are some ways we can practically support and help one another, like the prophets helped Zerubbabel and Jeshua, to fulfill God's calling and build up the body of Christ, as encouraged in Romans 14:19 and 1 Corinthians 12:7?

Then rose up Zerubbabel] Here we find three classes of men joining in the sacred work: Zerubbabel the civil governor; Jeshua the high priest or ecclesiastical governor; and Haggai and Zechariah the prophets.
