Ezra 2:34 Summary

The verse Ezra 2:34 tells us that 345 men from Jericho returned to Jerusalem with Zerubbabel, which is a small part of the larger list of returnees in Ezra 2:1-64. This verse reminds us that every person has a unique role to play in the kingdom of God, just like the men of Jericho, as seen in 1 Corinthians 12:12-31. Just as the men of Jericho were part of the larger community of returnees, we are all part of the body of Christ, and we each have a special gift or talent to contribute, as described in Romans 12:3-8. As we reflect on this verse, we can ask ourselves how we can use our own gifts and talents to serve the Lord, just like the men of Jericho, and how we can work together with our fellow believers to build stronger relationships, as seen in Acts 2:42-47.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the significance of the number 345 in Ezra 2:34?

The number 345 represents the number of men from Jericho who returned to Jerusalem with Zerubbabel, as recorded in Ezra 2:34, and is part of the larger list of returnees in Ezra 2:1-64, which is also referenced in Nehemiah 7:6-73.

Who were the men of Jericho in Ezra 2:34?

The men of Jericho were likely descendants of the original inhabitants of Jericho, which was a city conquered by Joshua in Joshua 6:1-27, and they were now returning to Jerusalem after the Babylonian exile, as part of the remnant described in Isaiah 10:20-22.

How does Ezra 2:34 fit into the larger narrative of Ezra?

Ezra 2:34 is part of the list of returnees in Ezra 2:1-64, which serves as a introduction to the rebuilding of the Temple in Ezra 3:1-13, and the opposition they faced in Ezra 4:1-24, which is also referenced in Haggai 1:1-15 and Zechariah 4:6-10.

What can we learn from the fact that the men of Jericho are listed separately in Ezra 2:34?

The fact that the men of Jericho are listed separately may indicate that they were a distinct group within the larger community of returnees, and their separate listing may serve to highlight their unique role or contribution to the rebuilding effort, as seen in the separate listing of the priests in Ezra 2:36-39, which is also referenced in Ezekiel 44:1-31.

  4. How does the listing of the men of Jericho in Ezra 2:34 remind me of the importance of community and unity in the body of Christ, as described in Ephesians 4:1-16, and how can I strive to build stronger relationships with my fellow believers, as seen in Acts 2:42-47?
