Ezekiel 37:27 Summary

[This verse is a beautiful promise that God will live among His people and be their God, which means He will be with them and take care of them. This is similar to what we see in Leviticus 26:12, where God says, 'I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be my people.' It's a promise of closeness and relationship, and it's something that we can experience as believers today. As 2 Corinthians 6:16 says, we are the temple of the living God, and He lives among us.]

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean for God to be our God and for us to be His people?

This means that God will have a personal relationship with us, and we will belong to Him, just like in Exodus 6:7 where God says, 'I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God.'

How does this verse relate to the concept of the temple in the Bible?

This verse shows that God's presence will dwell among His people, much like in the temple in Jerusalem, as described in 1 Kings 8:13, where Solomon says, 'I have built the temple for the name of the LORD, the God of Israel.'

Is this verse only talking about the Israelites or can it apply to all believers?

While the immediate context is about Israel, the principle of God dwelling among His people applies to all believers, as seen in 2 Corinthians 6:16, where it says, 'For we are the temple of the living God; as God has said, I will live among them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.'

How does this verse relate to our future hope as believers?

This verse points to the future when God will dwell among His people forever, which is also described in Revelation 21:3, where it says, 'And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, Now God s dwelling is with the people, and he will dwell with them.'

Reflection Questions

  1. What would it mean for you to truly experience God's presence in your life, and how can you seek that?
  2. How can you live in a way that reflects your identity as a child of God, and what difference should that make in your daily life?
  3. What are some ways that you can cultivate a deeper sense of intimacy with God, and what role does obedience play in that?
  4. How can you trust God to be your God, even when circumstances are difficult or uncertain, and what promises can you hold onto?

Gill's Exposition on Ezekiel 37:27

My tabernacle also shall be with them,.... The symbol of his presence: the meaning is, that he shall dwell in them by his Spirit and grace; and everyone of them shall be the temple of the living God,

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown on Ezekiel 37:27

My tabernacle also shall be with them: yea, I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

Matthew Poole's Commentary on Ezekiel 37:27

My tabernacle; the tabernacle of my presence, or wherein I will show my presence among them. Their fathers had a tabernacle of witness, so shall they; that was brought by Joshua into Canaan, but the Messiah shall bring with him a better, a spiritual and heavenly. I will be their God: see . They shall be my people; by my grace I will make them holy, as the people of a holy God ought to be, and I will make them happy, as the people of the ever-blessed God expect and hope to be.

Trapp's Commentary on Ezekiel 37:27

Ezekiel 37:27 My tabernacle also shall be with them: yea, I will be their God, and they shall be my people.Ver. 27. My tabernacle also,] i.e., Mine ordinances, those testimonies of my spedal presence. See Revelation 21:3.

Ellicott's Commentary on Ezekiel 37:27

(27) My tabernacle also.—Compare the whole promise of this verse with 2 Corinthians 6:16 : “Ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them: and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.” This promise of “a sanctuary in the midst of them for evermore” was in type and shadow set before the eyes of the people with the restoration of the Temple of Zerubbabel; but in its reality began to be fulfilled at the incarnation of the Son of God, of whom it is said by St. John (John 1:14) that “He dwelt (literally, tabernacled) among us,” and is continued by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in the hearts of believers (1 Corinthians 3:16; 1 Corinthians 6:19); while it is to receive its final consummation in that future when the tabernacle of God shall be with men, and “the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple” of the heavenly Jerusalem (Revelation 21:3-22). See Excursus F at end of this book.

Adam Clarke's Commentary on Ezekiel 37:27

Verse 27. My tabernacle] Jesus Christ, the true tabernacle, in whom dwelt all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

Cambridge Bible on Ezekiel 37:27

27. My tabernacle also] And my dwelling place … and I will be. The words repeat the idea in Ezekiel 37:26. The last words of the Book are, “The Lord is there.” The phrase with them, i.e. by or beside them (cf. Ezekiel 2:6), might mean over them, reference being to the situation of the temple, high above the city (Ezekiel 40:2), but this has little probability. It would be more natural to take over in the ideal sense of a “protection” to them. The sanctuary, however, does not protect, it sanctifies, although being sanctified Jehovah will protect them (ch. 38–39). The expression “I will be their God” varies the idea of his dwelling place being with them, Ezekiel 11:20, Ezekiel 14:11, Ezekiel 36:28.

Whedon's Commentary on Ezekiel 37:27

23-28. The new Israel will not be defiled by idolatry, but God will cleanse them and save them from the temptations connected with their ancient dwelling places, and “from all their backslidings”
