22Then you will do as I have done: You will not cover your lips or eat the bread of mourners. 23Your turbans will remain on your heads and your sandals on your feet. You will not mourn or weep, but you will waste away because of your sins, and you will groan among yourselves.Cross References

Ezekiel 24:21 Summary
[This verse tells us that God is going to allow the Temple, which was very important to the Israelites, to be destroyed as a judgment for their sins. This shows us that God is serious about sin and will not tolerate it, as seen in verses like Romans 6:23 where it says the wages of sin is death. The destruction of the Temple would be a huge loss for the Israelites, and it would also mean that many people would die, including some of their children. This is a reminder that our actions have consequences, and we need to turn to God and ask for forgiveness, as encouraged in 1 John 1:9 where it says if we confess our sins, God is faithful to forgive us.]
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean for God to desecrate His own sanctuary?
This means that God will allow the Temple in Jerusalem to be defiled and destroyed, which is a severe judgment on the people for their sins, as seen in Ezekiel 24:21 and also in Leviticus 26:31 where God warns of such desecration as a consequence of disobedience.
Why does God say the sons and daughters left behind will fall by the sword?
This is a declaration of the severe judgment that will come upon the people, where even those who were thought to be safe will not escape the coming destruction, a theme also found in Deuteronomy 28:41 where God warns of the loss of children as a consequence of disobedience.
What is the significance of the sanctuary being the pride of their power and the delight of their soul?
The Temple represented the center of Israel's spiritual and national pride, and its destruction would be a devastating blow to their sense of identity and security, much like the warning given in Jeremiah 7:4 where trust in the Temple's presence is condemned as a false security.
How does this verse relate to the overall message of Ezekiel?
This verse is part of a larger theme in Ezekiel where God pronounces judgment on Israel for their sins, emphasizing the consequences of their actions and the importance of repentance, a message also clear in Ezekiel 18:30 where God calls the people to repent and turn from their sins.
Reflection Questions
- What are the things in my life that I consider sacred or untouchable, and how would I respond if God were to allow them to be taken away or desecrated?
- How do I respond to the idea that God is sovereign over all things, including judgment and destruction, and what does this mean for my trust in Him?
- In what ways can I identify with the Israelites' attachment to the Temple, and what are the 'temples' in my own life that I need to surrender to God?
- What does this verse teach me about the seriousness of sin and the importance of repentance, and how can I apply this to my own life?
