Daniel 11:33 Summary

[This verse is saying that even when bad things happen to people who love and follow God, they can still help others understand God's love and plan, as seen in Daniel 11:33 and also in 2 Timothy 2:9 where the Apostle Paul says 'I suffer for the Gospel', showing that suffering is a part of the believer's life but God is always in control. It's like when Jesus said in Matthew 5:10-12 that we are blessed when we are persecuted for His sake. We can trust that God is always with us, even in hard times, and that He will give us the strength and courage we need to keep sharing His love with others, as described in Deuteronomy 31:6 and other passages.]

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean to have 'insight' in Daniel 11:33?

Having insight in this context means having a deep understanding of God's Word and His ways, as seen in Daniel 11:32 where it says 'the people who know their God will firmly resist him', referencing those who know and trust in the Lord as described in Jeremiah 9:23-24.

Why will those with insight fall by sword or flame, or be captured or plundered?

This is a reference to the persecution that believers will face, as seen in Daniel 11:32-35 and also in Matthew 24:9 where Jesus says 'then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death', emphasizing that suffering is a part of the believer's life but God is always in control.

How can we instruct many if we are facing persecution?

Even in the midst of persecution, believers can still share the Gospel and instruct many, as seen in Acts 8:4 where it says 'those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went', showing that God can use difficult circumstances for His glory and the spread of the Gospel.

Is this verse only talking about the end times or can it be applied to our lives now?

While Daniel 11:33 is specifically talking about a future time, the principle of standing firm in our faith and sharing God's Word with others is applicable to believers in any era, as seen in 1 Peter 3:15 where it says 'always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have'.

Ellicott's Commentary on Daniel 11:33

(33) They that understand.—This is the name by which those are called who were spoken of in the last verse as “knowing their God.” (Comp. Daniel 12:10; Psalms 111:10.) Shall instruct many.—That is, their example shall give instruction to “the many” who yield to the flatteries mentioned in the last verse. They show them whither they are drifting. For illustration, see 1Ma 2:1, &c.; 2Ma 6:18. Others may be found in the history of any religious persecution. Yet they shall fall.—The prophecy obviously refers to martyrdom, but whether to the sufferings of “those who understand” or of “those who are instructed” is not clear. Probably both are intended, as appears from Daniel 11:35. The deaths mentioned in 1Ma 1:57, &c., 3:41, 5:13, may be taken as typical of the sufferings of the Church in the last times.

Adam Clarke's Commentary on Daniel 11:33

Cambridge Bible on Daniel 11:33

33. And they that be wise] as the same word is rendered in A.V. of Daniel 12:3; Daniel 12:10. The verb means properly to shew understanding and discernment, such as may lead a man to act judiciously and bring him success; hence it is sometimes rendered prosper, or have good success, &c. See examples of the word in Joshua 1:7-8, 1 Samuel 18:5, Psalms 2:10, Proverbs 10:5; Proverbs 10:19 ‘he that refraineth his lips sheweth understanding,’ i.e. ‘acts judiciously,’ Isaiah 52:13. Here it is used, as a term of approbation, to denote those who, in a time of severe trial, shewed wisdom, by choosing the right course, and strenuously refusing to give up their faith. The name given to the loyal party in the Maccabees is the Hasidaeans, i.e. ḥ ?asξdξm, or ‘godly’: see 1Ma 2:42, ‘Then were gathered together unto them (i.e. unto Mattathias and his friends, who appear to have been the first to assume the aggressive against Antiochus’ decree) a company of Hasidaeans (συναγωγὴΑσιδαίων), mighty men out of Israel, every one that offered himself willingly (= ξִ ?ϊְ ?πַ ?γֵּ ?α, Judges 5:2; 2 Chronicles 17:16; Nehemiah 11:2) for the law.
