1 Save me, O God [the Almighty, my Savior], for the waters [floods, overwhelming troubles] are up to my neck [soul, very life]. word study 2 I have sunk [deeply submerged] into the miry [deep mire, soft earth] depths, where there is no [solid] footing; I have drifted [come, entered] into deep [overflowing] waters, where the flood [streams] engulfs [overflows, washes over] me. word study 3 I am weary [exhausted, tired out] from my crying [calling out for help]; my throat [voice, vocal cords] is parched [dry, dried out]. My eyes [sight, vision] fail [grow dim, are worn out], looking for [waiting on, searching for] my God [the Almighty, my Savior]. word study 4 Those who hate me [without a cause or reason] without cause outnumber the hairs of my head; many are those who would destroy me— my enemies [who wrongfully oppose me, falsely accusing] for no reason [or justification]. Though I did not steal [or take what is not mine], I must repay [what I did not take, in a form of restitution]. word study 5 You know [are fully aware of, see] my folly [foolishness, foolish actions], O God [Elohim, the all-knowing Judge], and my guilt [sins, wrongdoing] is not hidden [concealed, kept secret] from You. word study 6 May those who hope [trust, have faith] in You [the Lord God of Hosts, Almighty] not be ashamed [disappointed, humiliated] through me, O Lord GOD of Hosts [commander of the armies of heaven]; may those who seek [wait on, follow] You not be dishonored [confounded, brought to shame] through me, O God [Elohim, the supreme God] of Israel [the people of God]. word study 7 For I have endured [suffered, borne] scorn [reproach, sharp words] for Your sake [on Your account, because of You], and shame [humiliation, embarrassment] has covered [thoroughly humiliated] my face [my person, my presence]. word study 8 I have become [a foreigner, estranged] a stranger to my brothers [my own kin, relatives] and a [complete, utter] foreigner [alien, stranger] to my mother’s [family, household] sons [children, descendants], word study 9 because zeal [passion, fervent devotion] for Your house [temple, dwelling place] has consumed [eaten me up, thoroughly possessed] me, and the insults [reproaches, scornful words] of those who insult [reproach, blaspheme] You have fallen [come upon, been directed at] on me. word study 10 I wept [with bitter sorrow, and chastened my soul] and fasted [abstained from food, humbled myself], but it brought me [to my shame] reproach. word study 11 I made [put on, wore] sackcloth my clothing [garment, attire], and I was [became, became a laughingstock] sport [a proverb, a byword, an object of scorn] to them [in their eyes, among them]. word study 12 Those who sit [in authority, as leaders] at the gate [the city entrance, a place of gathering] mock [speak against, talk about] me, and I am [have become, been made] the song [proverb, subject of ridicule] of drunkards [those given to strong drink, intoxicated]. word study 13 But my prayer [a heartfelt request, a cry for help] to You, O LORD [the covenant God, Yehovah], is for a time [a season, a moment] of favor [acceptance, goodwill]. In Your abundant [rich, overflowing] loving devotion [mercy, lovingkindness], O God [the Almighty, the Sovereign], answer me with Your sure [certain, trustworthy] salvation [rescue, deliverance]. word study 14 Rescue me [deliver, save] from the mire [sticky earth, deep waters] and do not let me sink [drown, be overwhelmed]; deliver me [set me free, rescue] from my foes [those who hate me, enemies] and out of the deep waters [deep places, overwhelming circumstances]. word study 15 Do not let the floods [overflowing waters, waterflood] engulf me or the depths [deep waters, profound] swallow me up; let not the Pit [underworld, grave] close its mouth [shut her mouth] over me. word study 16 Answer me, O LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God], for Your loving devotion [kindness, tender mercies] is good; turn to me in keeping with Your great [abundant, multitude of] compassion [pity, tender mercies]. word study 17 Hide [turn away from, refuse to look at] not Your face [presence, countenance] from Your servant [one who serves, a bondservant], for I am in distress [trouble, great need]. Answer [respond, come to my aid] me quickly [speedily, without delay]! word study 18 Draw near [come close, be present] to my soul [my inner being, my life] and redeem [rescue, set free] me; ransom [deliver, save] me because of [on account of, due to] my foes [enemies, those who oppose me]. word study 19 You know my reproach [shame, dishonor], my shame [humiliation, disgrace] and disgrace [dishonor, humiliation]. All my adversaries [enemies, those who oppose me] are before You [in Your presence, under Your gaze]. word study 20 Insults [reproach, scorn] have broken my heart [deeply offended me], and I am in despair [full of heaviness, feeling helpless]. I looked for sympathy [pity, compassion], but there was none [no one showed me kindness], for comforters [those to encourage me], but I found no one [none to console me]. word study 21 They poisoned [gave gall for] my food [meat, sustenance] with gall [bitter herbs, poison] and gave me vinegar [sour wine, bitter drink] to quench [satisfy, calm] my thirst [dryness, longing]. word study 22 May their table become a snare [a trap, a source of danger]; may it be a retribution [a punishment, a consequence of their actions] and a trap [a net, a means of capture]. word study 23 May their eyes [be blinded, become dim] be darkened [from seeing, so they cannot perceive] so they cannot see [anything, have no insight], and their backs [loins, bodies] be bent [continually shake, always be trembling] forever [without end, perpetually]. word study 24 Pour out Your [intense, fiery] wrath [indignation, fierce anger] upon them, and let Your [wrathful] burning anger [fierceness, displeasure] overtake [take hold of, seize] them. word study 25 May their place [habitation, dwelling] be deserted [desolate, void]; let there be no one [none, anyone] to dwell [live, reside] in their tents [homes, houses]. word study 26 For they persecute [pursue, harass] the one You struck [smitten, wounded] and recount [tell of, talk to] the pain [sorrow, grief] of those You wounded [hurt, pierced]. word study 27 Add [pile up, increase] iniquity [guilt, wickedness] to their iniquity [sin, wrongdoing]; let them not [do not allow them to] share [participate, come into] in Your [belonging to You, divine] righteousness [justice, moral integrity]. word study 28 May they be blotted out [erased, removed completely] of the Book of Life [the record of those who have eternal life] and not [never, under no circumstances] listed [written, recorded] with the righteous [those who do right, the upright]. word study 29 But I am [suffering and in physical pain, poor and full of sorrow] in pain [afflicted, pained] and distress [heaviness, sorrow]; let Your [O God, divine salvation] salvation [rescue, deliverance, setting me on high] protect [set me up on high, keep me safe] me, O God. word study 30 I [the afflicted one, humbled] will praise God’s [Elohim, the supreme God] name [His character and reputation] in song [with a melody, a hymn of worship] and exalt [magnify, honor] Him with thanksgiving [gratitude, acknowledgment of His salvation]. word study 31 And this [act of worship, song of praise] will please [bring joy to, satisfy] the LORD [Yehovah, the supreme God] more than [as a sacrifice, in comparison to] an ox [young bullock], more than a bull [with strength, full-grown] with horns and hooves [a sign of fertility]. word study 32 The humble [meek, oppressed] will see [behold, perceive] and rejoice [be glad, happy]. You who seek [search for, come to] God [Elohim, the supreme God], let your hearts [inner beings, spirits] be revived [live, have life]! word study 33 For the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God] listens to the needy [poor, afflicted, or humble ones] and does not despise [ignore or reject] His captive [prisoner, oppressed] people [those in bondage or distress]. word study 34 Let heaven [the celestial realm, the dwelling place of God] and earth [the land, the material world] praise Him [the Lord, Yehovah], the seas [the vast oceans, the depths] and everything [all creatures, every living thing] that moves [lives, has existence] in them [within their boundaries, under His care]. word study 35 For God [the Savior and Redeemer] will save [rescue and deliver] Zion [the city of God, the heavenly Jerusalem] and rebuild [restore and renovate] the cities [towns and villages] of Judah, that they may dwell [live and reside] there and possess [own and inherit] it [the land and the promise]. word study 36 The descendants [seed, offspring] of His servants [those who follow Him] will inherit [possess, take control of] it, and those who love [are devoted to] His name [His character, reputation] will settle [dwell, live] in it [there, in that place]. word study
