1 Blessed [happy, truly fortunate] is he whose transgressions [rebellion, revolt against God] are forgiven [pardoned, completely wiped away], whose sins [offenses, wrongdoings] are covered [hidden from view, atoned for]. word study 2 Blessed [truly happy, fortunate] is the man [human being, Adam] whose iniquity [moral evil, sin] the LORD [Yehovah, God] does not [never] count [impute, charge] against him, in whose spirit [breath of life, mind] there is [exists] no [none, nothing] deceit [guile, slackness]. word study 3 When I kept [held back, was silent] silent, my bones [the substance of my body] became brittle [wasted away, old] from my groaning [roaring, crying out] all [the entirety of] day long [throughout the whole day, continually]. word study 4 For day [by day, daily] and night [a period of darkness, adversity] Your hand [an open hand; strength, a side or share] was heavy [weighty, oppressive] upon me; my strength [vigor, freshness] was drained [changed, turned] as in the summer [harvest season, time of drought] heat [intense warmth, parching]. Selah [a musical pause, a call to reflection] word study 5 Then I acknowledged [admitted, confessed] my sin [guilt, transgression] to You and did not hide [cover, conceal] my iniquity [moral evil, wickedness]. I said, “I will confess [acknowledge, reveal] my transgressions [rebellions, disobedience] to the LORD [Yehovah, the divine Savior],” and You forgave [lifted, removed] the guilt [punishment, iniquity] of my sin [wrongdoing, offense]. Selah [pause, reflection] word study 6 Therefore let all [every one, everyone who is] the godly [pious, faithful, saintly] pray [intercede, make petition] to You [toward God, in His direction] while You may be found [in a time when You are near, approachable]. Surely [certainly, without a doubt] when great [many, overflowing] waters [floods, overwhelming forces] rise, they will not [shall not, cannot] come near [reach, touch, overwhelm]. word study 7 You [my refuge, my shelter] are my hiding place [a secret and secure location, a shelter from danger]. You protect me from trouble [adversity, distress, narrow circumstances]; You surround me with songs [shouts, joyful praises] of deliverance [salvation, rescue, escape]. Selah [a pause, a moment of reflection] word study 8 I will instruct [teach and guide] you and teach [show and point out] you the way [path or manner of life] you should go; I will give [offer and provide] you counsel [advice and guidance] and watch [keep a careful eye] over you [with my eye upon you]. word study 9 Do not [in no way, never] be like the horse [a swallow, or a chariot horse] or mule [the offspring of a horse and a donkey], which have no [absence of] understanding [discernment, mental grasp]; they must be controlled [held in, restrained] with bit [a device to curb] and bridle [a restraint, like a halter] to make them come [approach, draw near] to you [towards you, in your direction]. word study 10 Many [numerous, abundant] are the sorrows [pains, troubles] of the wicked [morally wrong, sinful], but loving devotion [kindness, mercy] surrounds him who trusts [has faith, relies] in the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God]. word study 11 Be glad [rejoice, celebrate] in the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] and rejoice [be joyful, shout for joy], O righteous ones [those made right with God, just]; shout for joy [sing, overcome with praise], all you upright [straight, just] in heart [the center of feelings, will, and intellect]. word study
