1 Blessed [praised, honored] be the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God], my Rock [refuge, strong foundation], who trains [teaches, guides] my hands [an open hand; strength, a side or share] for war [battle, conflict], my fingers [used for grasping, holding] for battle [war, fight]. word study 2 He is my steadfast love [faithful kindness, loving mercy] and my fortress [stronghold, high tower], my stronghold [place of refuge, protection] and my deliverer [rescuer, savior]. He is my shield [defense, protector], in whom I take refuge [seek safety, trust], who subdues [conquers, defeats] peoples [nations, tribes] under me. word study 3 O LORD [Yehovah, the self-existent God], what [how, in what manner] is man [human, mortal], that You regard [take knowledge of, care about] him, the son [descendant, offspring] of man [humanity, mankind] that You think [devise, consider] of him [esteem, value]? word study 4 Man [a human being, like Adam] is like [resembles, comparable to] a breath [vanity, a mere puff of air]; his days [the time of his life, a span of years] are like [similar to, akin to] a passing [fleeting, transitory] shadow [a dark image, a fleeting presence]. word study 5 Part Your heavens [bow, stretch out], O LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God], and come down [descend, go down]; touch [strike, reach] the mountains [hills], that they may smoke [be angry, give out smoke, pour out smoke]. word study 6 Flash forth [cast forth, send out] Your lightning [bright and powerful force of nature, like a flashing sword] and scatter [disperse, shatter] them; shoot [send out, launch] Your arrows [sharp objects shot from a bow, for hunting or battle] and rout [confuse, disrupt, destroy] them. word study 7 Reach down [stretch forth, send] from on high [from heaven, a high place]; set me free [rescue, deliver] and rescue me [snatch away, save] from the deep waters [great waters, raging floods], from the grasp [hand, power] of foreigners [strange children, foreign enemies], word study 8 whose mouths speak [speak vanity, utter deceit] falsehood [empty words, lies], whose right hands [are deceitful, false] are deceitful [given to falsehood, untrustworthy]. word study 9 I will sing [make melody, offer praise] to You a new [fresh, recently created] song, O God [Elohim, the one supreme God]; on a harp [psaltery, musical instrument] of ten [a tenth] strings I will make music [sing praises, play] to You— word study 10 to Him [the Almighty, who rescues] who gives [puts, sets] victory [deliverance, salvation] to kings [royal rulers, monarchs], who frees [rescues, sets free] His servant [bondservant, slave] David [the youngest son of Jesse, a king of Israel] from the deadly [hurtful, evil] sword [a cutting instrument, a tool for battle]. word study 11 Set me free [to open, rescue from bondage] and rescue me [to snatch away, deliver from danger] from the grasp [hand, power, or direction] of foreigners [strangers, aliens, or heathen], whose mouths [lips, edge of something] speak [communicate, utter] falsehood [vanity, emptiness, or deceit], whose right hands [the right hand or side; the south] are deceitful [false, untrustworthy, or treacherous]. word study 12 Then our sons [like vigorous plants, grown strong] will be like plants nurtured [cultivated] in their youth [early years, formative period], our daughters [female children, women of beauty] like corner [projecting, supporting] pillars [hewn, carved] carved to adorn [beautify, honor] a palace [temple, grand building]. word study 13 Our storehouses [granaries, barns] will be full [abundant, filled to capacity], supplying [affording, providing] all manner of produce [crops, store]; our flocks [sheep, herds] will bring forth [produce, multiply] thousands [a large number, an abundance], tens of thousands [a multitude, countless] in our fields [outdoors, pastures]. word study 14 Our oxen [tame, well-laden] will bear [carry, be strong to labor] great loads [heavy burdens]. There will be no [none, absence of] breach [break, sudden outburst] in the walls, no [none, without] going into captivity [exile, being taken away], and no [none, absence of] cry of lament [outcry, anguish] in our streets [public areas, plazas]. word study 15 Blessed [happy, fortunate] are the people [nation, community] of whom this is so [in such a case, thus]; blessed [happy, fortunate] are the people [nation, community] whose God [Elohim, the supreme God] is the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God]. word study
