1 Then the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] said [to speak, communicate, or command] to Moses [the Israelite leader, born to Amram and Jochebed], word study 2 “Command [give orders, charge] the Israelites [children of Israel, descendants of Jacob] and say [speak, declare] to them: When you enter [come into, arrive in] the land [territory, region] of Canaan [the promised land, a land of milk and honey], it will be allotted [given, assigned] to you as an inheritance [a possession, a legacy] with these boundaries [borders, limits]: word study 3 Your southern [Negeb, south country] border will extend from the Wilderness [desert, open field] of Zin [a desert region near the Dead Sea] along the border [side, edge] of Edom [the region of Esau’s descendants]. On the east [front, direction], your southern border will run from the end [extremity, brink] of the Salt [seasoning, purifying] Sea [a large body of water], word study 4 cross south [of the Negeb, from the south] of the Ascent [a desert pass] of Akrabbim [the ascent of scorpions], continue [pass along, go on] to Zin [a desert region near the Dead Sea], and go south [toward the southern district] of Kadesh-barnea [a city in the southern desert of Judah]. Then it will go on [extend, come out] to Hazar-addar [the enclosure of glory, a place on the southern border of Canaan] and proceed [pass along, cross over] to Azmon [a strong place, a location on the southern border of Canaan], word study 5 where it will turn [surround, go around] from Azmon [a strong place], join [meet, intersect] the Brook [stream, riverbed] of Egypt [a country in northeastern Africa], and end [terminate, come to a close] at the Sea [the Mediterranean, a large body of water]. word study 6 Your western [on the west side, towards the sea] border [boundary, territorial limit] will be the coastline [shore, edge] of the Great [large, vast] Sea [Mediterranean, western ocean]; this [specific boundary] will be your boundary [dividing line, border] on the west [towards the sea, in the western direction]. word study 7 Your northern [north, from the direction of the rising sun] border will run from the Great [large, expansive] Sea [the Mediterranean, the western ocean] directly to Mount [a high mountain, a peak] Hor [a mountain peak, a boundary mark], word study 8 and from Mount [a high elevation, Hor the mountain peak] Hor to Lebo-hamath [the entrance of Hamath, a major city in Syria], then extend [mark out, designate] to Zedad [a boundary mark, a place near ancient Palestine], word study 9 continue to Ziphron [a place of fragrance], and end at Hazar-enan [village of fountains, a city on the northeast border]. This will be your boundary [the northern limit, border] on the north [Zaphon, the direction of the rising sun]. word study 10 And your eastern [front, or east direction] border [boundary, or territorial limit] will run straight [extend, or be marked out] from Hazar-enan [village of fountains] to Shepham [a region in northeastern Canaan], word study 11 then go down [to a lower place, descend] from Shepham [a region in northeastern Canaan] to Riblah [a town in Syria, meaning fertility] on the east side [front, eastern direction] of Ain [a place in southern Judah, named for its spring] and continue along the slopes [hills, inclines] east of the Sea of Chinnereth [Galilee Lake, a large body of water]. word study 12 Then the border [boundary, limit] will go down [descend, come down] along the Jordan [River, flowing from Lebanon to the Dead Sea] and end [terminate, come to an end] at the Salt [Mediterranean] Sea [large body of water]. This [specific land, territory] will be your land [country, territory, region], defined [marked, established] by its borders [boundaries, limits] on all sides [around, surrounding].” word study 13 So Moses [the Israelite leader] commanded the Israelites, “Apportion this land [the promised inheritance] by lot [casting stones to decide] as an inheritance [a gift from God]. The LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God] has commanded that it be given to the nine [a specific number] and a half [a divided portion] tribes [the families of Israel]. word study 14 For the tribes [according to the house of their fathers] of the Reubenites [descendants of Reuben] and Gadites [children of Gad], along with the half-tribe [middle, divided portion] of Manasseh [grandson of Jacob], have already received [taken, gotten] their inheritance [something passed down, a family heirloom, a legacy]. word study 15 These [two tribes and a half-tribe] two and a half tribes [the two tribes and the half-tribe, beyond the Jordan] have received [taken, acquired, been given] their inheritance [a possession passed down, a heritage] across [beyond, on the other side of] the Jordan [the river that flows from Lebanon to the Dead Sea] from [near, opposite] Jericho [the first city conquered by the Israelites in Canaan], toward [in the direction of, facing] the sunrise [the east, the direction of the sun’s rising].” word study 16 Then the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] said [to speak, communicate, or command] to Moses [the Israelite leader, born to Amram and Jochebed], word study 17 “These [specific individuals] are the names [identities, reputations] of the men [male leaders, Israelites] who are to assign [divide, distribute] the land [territory, inheritance] as an inheritance [possession, heritage] for you: Eleazar [God has helped] the priest [spiritual leader, mediator] and Joshua [God is salvation] son [descendant, offspring] of Nun [posterity, fish]. word study 18 Appoint [take, select] one [a single, unique] leader [prince, high-ranking official] from each [every] tribe [group of people] to distribute [divide, assign] the land [earth, territory]. word study 19 These [specific, appointed] are their names [identities, reputations]: Caleb [faithful, devoted] son [descendant, offspring] of Jephunneh [a leader, a guide] from the tribe [community, family group] of Judah [praise, worship]; word study 20 Shemuel [a leader, judge] son [descendant, offspring] of Ammihud [my kinsman is majesty, a Simeonite] from the tribe [a group of people] of Simeon [Shimeon, the second son of Jacob]; word study 21 Elidad [son and descendant] son of Chislon [father and ancestor] from the tribe [community and family group] of Benjamin [son of the right hand, youngest son of Jacob]; word study 22 Bukki [a prince, leader] son [descendant, offspring] of Jogli, a leader [high-ranking official, captain] from the tribe [family group] of Dan [a son of Jacob, a tribe of Israel]; word study 23 Hanniel [favored of God, a leader] son [descendant, offspring] of Ephod [a chief, father of Hanniel], a [high-ranking] leader [prince, captain] from the tribe [nation, family group] of Manasseh [a grandson of Jacob, ancestor of a large tribe] son [descendant, offspring] of Joseph [Jehovah has added, a name given to several Israelites]; word study 24 Kemuel [a relative of Abraham, the fat herder] son [descendant, or grandson] of Shiphtan [meaning’judic’, a leader’s name], a leader [high-ranking official, or captain] from the tribe [group of people] of Ephraim [doubly fruitful, referring to Joseph’s son]; word study 25 Eli-zaphan [Elizaphan, a leader’s name] son [descendant] of Parnach, a [tribal] leader [prince, high-ranking official] from the tribe [ancestral group] of Zebulun [a son of Jacob, founder of a tribe]; word study 26 Paltiel [God delivers, the one rescued by God] son [descendant, offspring] of Azzan [very strong, powerful], a leader [prince, high-ranking official, captain] from the tribe [a tribe of Israel] of Issachar [there is recompense, rewarded]; word study 27 Ahihud [the brother of majesty] son of Shelomi [a chief], a leader [prince, high-ranking official] from the tribe [family group] of Asher [the eighth son of Jacob]; word study 28 and Pedahel [the ransomed one, redeemed by God] son [descendant, offspring] of Ammihud [my kinsman is majesty], a leader [prince, high-ranking official] from the tribe [a tribe of Israel] of Naphtali [one of the twelve tribes of Israel].” word study 29 These [specific individuals, the appointed ones] are the ones whom the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] commanded [to appoint, to give orders] to apportion [to divide, to distribute] the inheritance [a possession, a gift] to the Israelites [the descendants of Jacob, God’s chosen people] in the land [the territory, the region] of Canaan [the promised land, the land of milk and honey]. word study
