1 This is the word [message, saying] that came [was given, came to be] to Jeremiah [whom Jehovah has appointed] from the LORD [Yehovah, the Lord of all]: word study 2 “This is what the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God], the God [Elohim, the supreme deity] of Israel [the symbolic name of Jacob and his descendants], says: ‘Write in a book [a written document, scroll] all the words [things, matters, or affairs] that I have spoken [communicated, commanded] to you [toward you, in your direction]. word study 3 For behold [look, take notice], the days [a period of time, an era] are coming, declares the LORD [Yehovah, the self-existent God], when I will restore [return, bring back] from captivity [a state of being held prisoner, bondage] My people [a nation] Israel [the descendants of Jacob] and Judah [the tribe of Judah], declares the LORD. I will restore [bring back, return] them to the land [the earth, a country] that I gave [bestowed, granted] to their fathers [ancestors, forefathers], and they will possess [take control of, occupy] it [the land, their inheritance].’” word study 4 These [specific, particular] are the words [messages, declarations] that the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] spoke [uttered, communicated] concerning [regarding, about] Israel [the symbolic name of Jacob, and his descendants] and [toward, to] Judah [the tribe descended from Judah, the son of Jacob]. word study 5 Yes, this is what the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] says: “A cry [voice] of panic [trembling, fear] is heard— a cry [voice] of terror [dread, fear], not of peace [shalom, completeness and wellness]. word study 6 Ask now [consider carefully], and see: Can a male [man, male person] give birth [beget, bring forth a child]? Why then do I see every man [great man] with his hands [strength, power] on his stomach [loins, seat of vigor] like a woman [female, mother] in labor [travail, childbirth] and every face [presence, countenance] turned pale [into paleness, mildew, greenish hue]? word study 7 How awful [terrible, distressing] that day will be! None [nothing, no other time] will be like it [without equal, unparalleled]! It is the time [season, moment] of Jacob’s [Israel’s, the people of God] distress [trouble, vexation], but he will be saved [delivered, rescued] out of it [from his affliction, his suffering]. word study 8 On that day [in the future, at a specific time], declares the LORD [Yehovah, the Lord of Israel] of Hosts [armies, heavenly forces], I will break [shatter, destroy] the yoke [a wooden beam] off their necks [the place of burden, figurative of servitude] and tear [pull away, separate] off their bonds [restraints, ropes], and no longer [not again, still] will strangers [foreigners, those outside of God’s people] enslave [make servants, rule over] them [God’s people, the Israelites]. word study 9 Instead, they will serve [worship and obey] the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] their God [Elohim, the one supreme God] and David [the youngest son of Jesse, a king of Israel] their king [a royal person, a ruler], whom I will raise up [cause to stand, appoint] for them. word study 10 As for you, O Jacob [my faithful servant] My servant, do not be afraid [dismayed or terrified], declares the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God], and do not be dismayed [completely broken], O Israel [God’s chosen people]. For I will surely save [rescue and deliver] you out of a distant [far-off] place, your descendants [seed, offspring] from the land of their captivity [exile and bondage]! Jacob [the father of the Israelites] will return [come back, turn back] to quiet [peace and stillness] and ease [rest and security], with no one to make him afraid [tremble with fear]. word study 11 For I am with you [by your side, in close relationship] to save [rescue, deliver] you, declares the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God]. Though I will completely destroy [bring to an end, consume] all the nations [Gentile peoples, foreign countries] to which I have scattered [dispersed, driven out] you, I will not completely destroy [make an end of, annihilate] you. Yet I will discipline [correct, chastise] you justly [in measure, with fairness], and will by no means [in no way, not at all] leave you unpunished [without consequence, guilty].” word study 12 For [thus, in this manner] this is what the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] says: “Your [incurable, desperate] injury [wound, bruise] is [completely, utterly] incurable [weak, sick]; your wound [blow, affliction] is [extremely, very] grievous [painful, severe]. word study 13 There is no one [none to judge your case] to plead your cause [to act as a judge or advocate for you], no remedy [healing medicines, cure] for your sores [wounds, injuries], no recovery [healing, restoration] for you. word study 14 All your lovers [who once cared for you, allies] have forgotten [been oblivious to, neglected] you; they no longer [do not, cannot] seek [search for, ask after] you, for I have struck [wounded, smitten] you as an enemy [adversary, foe] would, with the discipline [correction, chastisement] of someone [a person, a nation] cruel [harsh, unkind], because of your great [abundant, vast] iniquity [moral evil, sin] and your numerous [many, increased] sins [guilt, transgressions]. word study 15 Why do you cry out [for help, in distress] over your wound [breaking, shattering]? Your pain [sorrow, grief] has no cure [is incurable, cannot be healed]! Because of your great [abundant, vast] iniquity [moral evil, sin] and your numerous [increased, multiplied] sins [guilt, punishment for sin] I have done these things [these actions, this punishment] to you. word study 16 Nevertheless [in view of this], all [everything, every single one] who devour [consume, plunder] you will be devoured [eaten, destroyed], and all [every one of] your adversaries [enemies, those who oppose you]—every one of them— will go off [be taken away, led captive] into exile [captivity, a state of being held prisoner]. Those who plundered [spoiled, robbed] you will be plundered [spoiled, robbed], and all [every one of] who raided [attacked, preyed upon] you will be raided [attacked, preyed upon]. word study 17 But I will restore [give back, recover] your health [wholeness, complete well-being] and heal [mend, cure] your wounds [hurts, afflictions], declares [says, utters] the LORD [Yehovah, the covenant God], because they call [name, label] you an outcast [rejected, abandoned one], Zion [the city of God, the holy mountain], for whom [on behalf of whom] no one [none, not a single person] cares [seeks, looks after].” word study 18 This is what the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] says: “I will restore [bring back, return] the fortunes [captivity, exile] of Jacob’s [the son of Isaac] tents [tabernacles, dwelling places] and have compassion [show love, pity] on his dwellings [houses, families]. And the city [excitement, a place with a wall] will be rebuilt [established, repaired] on her own ruins [mound, heap], and the palace [citadel, high palace] will stand [dwell, remain] in its rightful [just, proper] place [position, location]. word study 19 Thanksgiving [praise, worship] will proceed from them, a sound [voice] of celebration [laughter, joyful shouting]. I will multiply [increase, grow] them, and they will not be decreased [made few, diminished]; I will honor [glorify, make weighty] them, and they will not be belittled [made small, treated as insignificant]. word study 20 Their children [sons and descendants] will be as in days of old [as aforetime, in former times], and their congregation [gathering of people, community] will be established [set up, founded] before Me; and I will punish [visit, reckon with] all [everything, every one] their oppressors [those who afflict, crush, or mistreat them]. word study 21 Their leader [noble, great] will be one of their own [from their midst, among themselves], and their ruler [governor, prince] will arise [come out, proceed] from their midst [from among them, out of their own number]. And I will bring him near [cause him to draw near, invite him to come close], and he will approach [draw near, come to] Me, for who [what person, who is he] would dare [have boldness, pledge his heart] on his own [without being asked, by his own strength] to approach [come near, draw near] Me?” declares [says, utters] the LORD [Yehovah, the Lord God]. word study 22 “And you will be [to exist as, come into being] My people [a nation, a community], and I [the speaker, the Lord] will be [to exist as, come into being] your God [Elohim, the one supreme God, having divine power and authority].” word study 23 Behold [look, see], the storm [tempest, whirlwind] of the LORD [Yehovah] has gone out [come forth] with fury [intense anger, rage], a whirlwind [tornado, sweeping storm] swirling down [twisting, turning] upon the heads [the topmost part of the body] of the wicked [morally wrong, guilty ones]. word study 24 The fierce [burning, intense] anger [wrath, nose, countenance] of the LORD [Yehovah, the Lord God] will not turn back [return, be turned away] until He has fully accomplished [executed, performed, done] the purposes [plots, plans, devices] of His heart [mind, will, intellect]. In the days [latter days, end of time, future] to come you will understand [discern, know, consider] this. word study
