Isaiah 53
BSA1 Who [expressing a wish or inquiry] has believed [be faithful, trust] our message [tidings, news, report] [of salvation, from God]? And to whom [which person] has the arm [the arm as stretched out; strength, might, power] of the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] been revealed [uncovered, made known] [in a display of power]? word study 2 He grew up [like a tender plant, as a young shoot] before Him [in His presence, face to face] like a [delicate, weak] tender shoot, and like a root [shoresh, the underground part of a plant] out of [barren, dry] dry ground [the land, earth]. He had no stately [majestic] form [appearance, figure] or majesty [hadar, glory, beauty] to attract us, no [outward, physical] beauty [a sight, appearance] that we should desire [take great pleasure in, cherish] Him. word study 3 He was despised [rejected, looked down upon] and rejected [forsaken, turned away from] by men, a man [human, mortal] of sorrows [pain, grief], acquainted [familiar, experienced] with grief [suffering, affliction]. Like one from whom men hide [turn away, conceal] their faces [presence, countenance], He was despised [held in contempt, esteemed not], and we esteemed [valued, respected] Him not [as worthless, without honor]. word study 4 Surely [truly, without a doubt] He took on our infirmities [sicknesses, diseases] and carried our sorrows [griefs, pains]; yet we considered Him stricken [plagued, smitten] by God [Elohim, the supreme Judge], struck down [smitten, afflicted] and afflicted [humbled, oppressed]. word study 5 But He [wounded for us] was pierced [to bore, profaned] for our transgressions [rebellion against God], He was crushed [to crush, bruised] for our iniquities [moral evil, sin]; the punishment [discipline, correction] that brought us peace [completeness, wellness, friendship] was upon Him, and by His stripes [wounds, bruises] we are healed [to heal, made whole]. word study 6 We all [as a flock] like sheep have gone astray [to go astray, wander], each one [man, individual] has turned [to face, direct] to his own way [path, journey]; and the LORD [Yehovah, God] has laid [to fall on, meet] upon Him the iniquity [moral evil, sin] of us all [everything, everyone]. word study 7 He was oppressed [cruelly treated, afflicted] and afflicted [humbled, made low], yet He did not open [utter a word, speak out] His mouth. He was led [conducted, brought] like a lamb [a gentle, innocent animal] to the slaughter [a place of killing, sacrifice], and as a sheep [a humble creature] before her shearers [those who cut, remove wool] is silent [dumb, unable to speak], so He did not open [speak out, utter a sound] His mouth. word study 8 By [coercion, restraint] oppression and [justice, righteous judgment] judgment He was taken away, and who [what person, no one] can recount His [descendants, posterity] descendants? For He was [cut off, severed] cut off from the land [earth] of the living [alive]; He was stricken [plagued, afflicted] for the transgression [rebellion] of My [people, nation] people. word study 9 He was assigned [given, placed] a grave [sepulchre, burial site] with the wicked [morally wrong, sinful people], and with a rich [wealthy, noble] man in His death [passing away, demise], although He had done [committed, performed] no violence [cruelty, injustice], nor was any deceit [falsehood, cheating] in His mouth [lips, speech]. word study 10 Yet it was the LORD’s [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] will [pleasure, delight] to crush [bruise, afflict] Him and to cause Him to suffer [be weak, grieve]; and when His soul [living being, essence] is made a guilt [sin, offense] offering, He will see [look after, provide for] His offspring [seed, descendants], He will prolong [extend, lengthen] His days [time, lifespan], and the good pleasure [delight, will] of the LORD [Yehovah, the supreme God] will prosper [succeed, rush forward] in His hand [power, direction]. word study 11 After the anguish [travail, suffering] of His soul [living being, essence], He will see [behold, perceive] the light [understanding, salvation] of life [eternal existence] and be satisfied [filled, content]. By His knowledge [understanding, wisdom] My righteous [just, upright] Servant [slave, attendant] will justify [make right, declare innocent] many [a multitude, numerous ones], and He will bear [carry, endure] their iniquities [sins, moral evil]. word study 12 Therefore I will allot Him a portion [a heritage, a share] with the great [the mighty, the powerful], and He will divide the spoils [the booty, the plunder] with the strong [the mighty, the valiant], because He has poured out His life [His soul, His very being] unto death [the ultimate sacrifice, separation from God], and He was numbered [counted, reckoned] with the transgressors [the rebellious, the lawless]. Yet He bore [carried, lifted] the sin [the guilt, the iniquity] of many [a multitude, a great number] and made intercession [prayer, supplication] for the transgressors [the wrongdoers, the unrighteous]. word study
