Ezekiel 32

BSA

1 In the twelfth year, on the first [initial, beginning] day of the twelfth month, the word [a thing or matter] of the LORD [Yehovah, The covenant Name of God] came to me, saying [to speak or command], word study 2 “Son of man [human, a mortal], take up a lament [a song of grief, a dirge] for Pharaoh [the king of Egypt, a powerful ruler] king of Egypt and say to him: ‘You are like a lion [a young lion, a fierce beast] among the nations [Gentile countries, the heathen world]; you are like a monster [a dragon, a sea beast] in the seas [the great waters, the ocean]. You thrash about [burst forth, come out] in your rivers [the Nile, the life-giving waters], churning up the waters [stirring up, troubling] with your feet [by your actions, through your power] and muddying [fouling, polluting] the streams [the rivers, the waterways].’ word study 3 This is what the Lord [Adonay, the sovereign Master] GOD [Yehovah] says: ‘I will spread [stretch out, cast forth] My net [a network] over you with a company [assembly, gathering] of many [numerous, abundant] peoples [nations, Gentiles], and they will draw [bring, haul] you up in My net [a net of judgment, a means of capture]. word study 4 I will abandon [forsake, leave to fate] you on the land [earth, territory] and hurl [cast, throw violently] you into the open field [bare earth, desolate area]. I will cause all the birds [fowl, creatures of the air] of the air [heaven, sky] to settle [dwell, rest] upon you, and all the beasts [wild animals, living creatures] of the earth [land, ground] to eat their fill [be satisfied, have enough] of you. word study 5 I will put your flesh [body, mortal being] on the mountains [hills] and fill the valleys [deep, narrow gorges] with your remains [refuse, corpses, height, lofty stature]. word study 6 I will drench [water, pour out] the land [earth, territory] with the flow [discharge, overflow] of your blood [the liquid that flows through the body], all the way [toward, unto] to the mountains [hills]— the ravines [channels, streams] will be filled [made full, completed]. word study 7 When I extinguish [quench, put out] you, I will cover [hide from view, fill up hollows] the heavens [the visible universe, the abode of God] and darken [make mournful, be dark] their stars [round or shining celestial bodies]. I will cover [use a cloud to conceal] the sun [the celestial body] with a cloud [a collection of water vapor], and the moon [the natural satellite of the earth] will not give [fail to provide] its light [natural or spiritual illumination]. word study 8 All [every single one] the shining lights [luminaries, celestial bodies] in the heavens [the sky, the heavens above] I will darken [make black, bring gloom] over you, and I will bring [set, impose] darkness [deep gloom, spiritual darkness] upon your land [territory, earthly domain],’ declares [utters, speaks forth] the Lord [Adonay, sovereign ruler] GOD [Yehovah]. word study 9 ‘I will trouble [vex, provoke to anger] the hearts [inner being, feelings, and intellect] of many [numerous, a multitude of] peoples [nations, Gentiles], when I bring about [cause, effect] your destruction [breaking, shattering] among the nations [Gentile nations, countries], in countries [lands, territories] you do not know [are unfamiliar with, have not experienced]. word study 10 I will cause many [various, several] peoples [nations, Gentiles] to be appalled [desolate, amazed] over you, and their kings [rulers, monarchs] will shudder [tremble, be horrified] in horror [fear, dread] because of you when I brandish [wave, swing] My sword [cutting instrument] before them. On the day [time, period] of your downfall [destruction, ruin] each of them will tremble [be afraid, shake] every moment [instant, brief time] for his life [soul, existence].’ word study 11 For [thus, in this manner] this is what the Lord [Adonay, Master] GOD [Yehovah] says: ‘The sword [cutting instrument] of the king [royal ruler] of Babylon [city of confusion] will come [enter, approach] against you [to attack, to strike]! word study 12 I will make your hordes [large crowds, multitudes] fall by the swords [cutting instruments, tools of war] of the mighty [strong, powerful warriors], the most ruthless [fearful, awe-inspiring] of all nations [Gentile peoples, non-Hebrews]. They will ravage [bring to ruin, devastate] the pride [majesty, excellence] of Egypt [a country in northeastern Africa] and all her multitudes [large crowds, populations] will be destroyed [annihilated, desolated]. word study 13 I will slaughter [destroy, put an end to] all her cattle [livestock, animals] beside the abundant [many, great] waters [rivers, sources of refreshment]. No human [man’s] foot [step, tread] will muddy [trouble, stir up] them again, and no cattle [animal’s] hooves [feet, claws] will disturb [trouble, make murky] them. word study 14 Then [at that time, in the past] I will let her waters [liquid, source of refreshment] settle [become calm, sink] and will make her rivers [a flood] flow [run smoothly] like oil [olive oil],’ declares [utterance, declaration from God] the Lord [Adonay, title of reverence] GOD [Yehovah, the supreme God]. word study 15 ‘When I [as the sovereign Lord] make the land [territory, region] of Egypt [a country in northeastern Africa] a desolation [waste, devastation] and empty [deprive, lay waste] it of all that filled [was full of, inhabited] it, when I strike down [smite, destroy] all who live [dwell, inhabit] there, then they will know [recognize, understand] that I am the LORD [Yehovah, the self-existent God].’ word study 16 This is the lament [a song of grief, dirge] they will chant [wail, lament] for her; the daughters [female children, women] of the nations [Gentiles, non-Hebrews] will chant [lament, mourn] it. Over Egypt [a country in northeastern Africa] and all her multitudes [large crowds, tumultuous assemblies] they will chant [lament, wail] it, declares the Lord [Adonay, a title of reverence] GOD [Yehovah].” word study 17 In the twelfth year, on the fifteenth day of the month [lunar cycle, new moon], the word [divine message, declaration] of the LORD [Yehovah, the Lord God] came to me, saying [to speak, declare, command], word study 18 “Son of man [human, a mortal], wail [lament, mourn] for the multitudes [crowd, large group] of Egypt [a country in northeastern Africa], and consign [cast down, send] her and the daughters [female children, nations] of the mighty [powerful, great] nations to the depths [lower parts, lowest regions] of the earth [land, ground] with those who descend [go down, fall] to the Pit [a cistern, a place of darkness]: word study 19 Whom [excel] do you surpass in beauty [loveliness, pleasantness, or delight]? Go [descend, or fall] down and be placed [laid, or rested] with the uncircumcised [those without covenant, or heathen]! word study 20 They will fall among [among the slain, in the midst of them] those slain [killed, pierced] by the sword [a cutting instrument, a tool of war]. The sword [an instrument of judgment, a symbol of divine wrath] is appointed [given, ordained]! Let them drag her away [draw her out, pull her along] along with all [every, the entire] her multitudes [crowds, large groups of people]. word study 21 Mighty [strong, powerful] chiefs [leaders, warriors] will speak [communicate, declare] from the midst [center, heart] of Sheol [the underworld, grave, place of no return] about Egypt and her allies [helpers, assistants]: ‘They have come down [descended, fallen] and lie [rest, sleep] with the uncircumcised [those without God’s covenant, heathen] [those still having their foreskin], with those slain [killed, pierced] by the sword [cutting instrument, weapon].’ word study 22 Assyria [Asshur, the ancestor of the Assyrians] is there [in that place, thither] with her whole company [assembly, group of people]; her graves [sepulchres, burial sites] are all around her [surrounding, encompassing]. All [every single one] of them are slain [killed, profaned], fallen [to fall, defeated] by the sword [cutting instrument, weapon of war]. word study 23 Her graves [resting-places, tombs] are set in the depths [uttermost parts, inmost] of the Pit [cistern, abyss], and her company [assembly, multitude] is all around her grave [tomb, sepulchre]. All of them [every one, the whole multitude] are slain [killed, wounded], fallen [killed, defeated] by the sword [cutting instrument, knife]— those who once [formerly, in the past] spread [caused, inspired] terror [fear, dread] in the land [earth, territory] of the living [alive, having life]. word study 24 Elam [a son of Shem and his descendants] is there with all [every single one] her multitudes [large crowds, tumultuous gatherings] around her grave [tomb, final resting place]. All of them are slain [killed, put to death], fallen [to fall, be defeated] by the sword [a cutting instrument, a tool of war]— those who went down [descended, went to a lower place] uncircumcised [without the covenant sign, physically unmarked] to the earth [land, soil] below [in the lower parts, the depths], who once spread their terror [fear, dread, a strong feeling of being scared] in the land [soil, ground, country] of the living [those who are alive, having life]. They bear their disgrace [shame, reproach, a feeling of being insulted] with those who descend [go down, fall] to the Pit [a cistern, a deep hole, a place of confinement]. word study 25 Among the slain [killed, destroyed] they prepare a resting place [bed, grave] for Elam with all her hordes [multitude, crowd], with her graves [tombs, burial sites] all around her [surrounding, encompassing]. All of them are uncircumcised [heathen, without covenant], slain by the sword [killed by war, destroyed by violence], although their terror [fear, dread] was once spread in the land of the living [the world, the earth]. They bear their disgrace [shame, reproach] with those who descend to the Pit [go down to the grave, enter the underworld]. They are placed among the slain [killed, dead]. word study 26 Meshech [a people group from Asia Minor] and Tubal [a region in Asia Minor, similar to Cappadocia] are there with all [every single one of] their multitudes, with their graves [places of burial, sepulchres] all around them. All [every one] of them are uncircumcised [without the covenant sign, physically and spiritually], slain [killed, pierced] by the sword [a cutting instrument, a tool of war], because they spread [caused, gave] their terror [fear, dread] in the land [the earth, a country] of the living [those who have physical or spiritual life]. word study 27 They do not lie down [rest or sleep] with the fallen warriors [mighty men, champions] of old, who went down [descended] to Sheol [the underworld, grave] with their weapons [instruments] of war, whose swords [cutting instruments] were placed [laid] under their heads, whose shields [body-covers] rested [were placed] on their bones, although the terror [fear, dread] of the mighty [strong, powerful] was once [in the past] in the land [earth, territory] of the living [those who have life, the living ones]. word study 28 But you [the king of Egypt] too will be shattered [broken, cut down] and lie down [rest, sleep with the dead] among the uncircumcised [those without a covenant, heathen], with [near, in company with] those slain [killed, pierced] by the sword [a cutting instrument, a tool of war]. word study 29 Edom [the region of Esau’s descendants] is there, and all [every single one] her kings [royal rulers] and princes [leaders, nobles], who despite their [great, remarkable] might [strength, power] are laid [placed, positioned] among those slain [killed, destroyed] by the sword [a cutting instrument, a tool of war]. They lie down [rest, sleep, are at peace] with the uncircumcised [those without a covenant sign, the heathen], with those who descend [go down, fall] to the Pit [a deep hole, a place of darkness]. word study 30 All the leaders [princes, rulers] of the north [Zaphon, the northern region] and all the Sidonians [inhabitants of Sidon, a city] are there; they went down [descended, fell] in disgrace [shame, humiliation] with the slain [those killed, defeated], despite the terror [fear, dread] of their might [strength, power]. They lie [rest, sleep] uncircumcised [without a covenant sign, heathen] with those slain [killed, slaughtered] by the sword [cutting instrument, weapon] and bear [carry, endure] their shame [disgrace, reproach] with those who descend [go down, fall] to the Pit [a deep hole, the underworld]. word study 31 Pharaoh [the king of Egypt] will see [behold, perceive] them and be comforted [consoled, shown pity] over all [every single one of] his multitude [large crowd, army]— Pharaoh and all [every member of] his army [force, military strength], slain [killed, cut down] by the sword [cutting instrument, weapon], declares [utters, speaks] the Lord [Adonay, Master] GOD [Yehovah]. word study 32 For [because of this reason] I will spread My terror [fear, dread] in the land [earth, territory] of the living [those who have life, the alive], so that Pharaoh [the king of Egypt, a powerful leader] and all [every, the entire] his multitude [crowd, large group] will be laid to rest [put to sleep, buried] among the uncircumcised [those without circumcision, unbelievers], with those slain [killed, destroyed] by the sword [a cutting instrument, a weapon], declares the Lord [Adonay, the supreme Ruler] GOD [Yehovah].” word study
