In Scripture, those who suffer for their faith are highly esteemed, as seen in Matthew 5:10, where Jesus pronounces a blessing on those persecuted for righteousness' sake. The apostle Peter writes that if believers suffer for the name of Christ, they are blessed, and should not be ashamed, but rather glorify God (1 Peter 4:14-16). According to 2 Timothy 3:12, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ will suffer persecution, and in Revelation 6:9-10, the martyrs are depicted as souls under the altar, crying out for justice. Jesus teaches His disciples to fear God, who can destroy both soul and body, rather than fearing human persecutors (Matthew 10:28-33).

If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. Indeed, none of you should suffer as a murderer or thief or wrongdoer, or even as a meddler. But if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but glorify God that you bear that name.
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Then I saw the thrones, and those seated on them had been given authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image, and had not received its mark on their foreheads or hands. And they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.
What then shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also, along with Him, freely give us all things? Who will bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is there to condemn us? For Christ Jesus, who died, and more than that was raised to life, is at the right hand of God—and He is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?
