19 Bible Verses on Grounds for Divorce

19 verses

The Bible teaches that marriage is a sacred institution, but it also acknowledges that there are circumstances under which divorce may be permissible. In Malachi 2:16, God expresses his hatred for divorce, emphasizing the importance of faithfulness in marriage. Jesus, in the Gospels, particularly in Matthew 5:31-32 and Matthew 19:9, discusses the grounds for divorce, citing sexual immorality as a valid reason, while also warning against divorcing a spouse without proper cause, as seen in Luke 16:18. The New Testament emphasizes that divorce should not be taken lightly, and that reconciliation and forgiveness should be pursued whenever possible.

So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.” “Why then,” they asked, “did Moses order a man to give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away? ” Jesus replied, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because of your hardness of heart; but it was not this way from the beginning. If a man marries a woman, but she becomes displeasing to him because he finds some indecency in her, he may write her a certificate of divorce, hand it to her, and send her away from his house. If, after leaving his house, she goes and becomes another man’s wife, and the second man hates her, writes her a certificate of divorce, hands it to her, and sends her away from his house, or if he dies, then the husband who divorced her first may not remarry her after she has been defiled, for that is an abomination to the LORD. For the unbelieving husband is sanctified through his believing wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified through her believing husband.
