The Bible teaches that humans are complex beings, comprising multiple aspects that make up our entire person. According to Genesis, God formed humanity from the dust of the earth and breathed into us the breath of life, creating a living soul. The apostle Paul prays for the sanctification of the whole person, including spirit, soul, and body, as seen in 1 Thessalonians. In Matthew, Jesus warns against fearing those who can harm the body but not the soul, highlighting the distinction between these components. The division between soul and spirit is also noted in Hebrews, which describes the word of God as able to divide these two, and Ecclesiastes, which describes the return of the spirit to God at death.
