Speaking Truth

4 sermons

Speaking truth is a fundamental aspect of the Christian faith, deeply rooted in the character of God and His Word. Scripture emphasizes the importance of truthfulness, as seen in Proverbs 12:22, which declares, 'The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy.' Jesus, the embodiment of truth (John 14:6), calls His followers to reflect this truth in their lives and interactions. In Ephesians 4:15, Paul encourages believers to 'speak the truth in love,' highlighting that truth must be communicated with grace and compassion, ensuring that it builds up rather than tears down. However, speaking truth can come at a cost, as illustrated in the life of the prophet Elijah during the reign of King Ahab, where proclaiming God's message led to significant personal sacrifice (1 Kings 18). Additionally, the challenge of discerning when and how to speak truth is echoed in the admonition found in Matthew 7:1, 'Do not judge, or you too will be judged.' This verse serves as a reminder that while we are called to speak truth, we must do so with humility and self-awareness. Ultimately, embracing the call to speak truth is not merely about conveying facts, but about embodying the love and righteousness of Christ in a world desperately in need of both.
