Holy War

1 sermons

Holy War, as understood within a biblical framework, transcends the physical battles often associated with the term. Scripture reveals that the true struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces of evil (Ephesians 6:12). In the Old Testament, God commanded the Israelites to engage in warfare as a means of judgment against nations that had turned away from Him, exemplified in passages like Deuteronomy 20:16-18. However, the New Testament redefines this concept, emphasizing that our warfare is spiritual, rooted in prayer and the proclamation of the Gospel (2 Corinthians 10:3-5). Jesus teaches in Matthew 5:44 to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us, highlighting a radical departure from the traditional notion of holy war. The Apostle Paul further instructs believers to engage in spiritual warfare by putting on the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18), which equips them to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. Ultimately, the biblical understanding of holy war invites Christians to participate in the redemptive mission of Christ, fighting not with swords, but with love, truth, and faith, as they seek to advance God's Kingdom on earth.
