Great Depression
The term "Great Depression" is not found in the Bible, as it is a modern historical term specifically referring to the severe worldwide economic downturn that occurred during the 1930s. However, the Bible does address themes of economic hardship, poverty, and social injustice, which can resonate with the experiences associated with a great depression. For instance, the Book of Job reflects profound personal and economic suffering, where Job loses his wealth, health, and family, illustrating the deep despair that can accompany financial ruin (Job 1-2). Similarly, the Book of Lamentations conveys the grief and suffering of a people experiencing devastating loss, often tied to national calamity or divine judgment (Lamentations 1:1-11). In the New Testament, Jesus speaks about the poor and their blessedness in the Kingdom of God (Matthew 5:3) and calls for compassion and support for those in need (Matthew 25:35-40). These passages highlight the biblical perspective on suffering and the importance of community support during times of economic distress, which can be reflective of circumstances similar to a great depression.
