Cult
In biblical contexts, the term "cult" is not explicitly used as it is understood in contemporary discussions, which often refer to religious groups that deviate from mainstream beliefs or practices. However, the Bible does address the idea of false worship and idolatry, which can be considered analogous to cultic practices. The Old Testament frequently warns against the worship of foreign gods and the rituals associated with them, as seen in passages like Exodus 20:3-5, where God commands Israel to have no other gods besides Him and forbids making graven images. The New Testament also addresses practices that could be classified as cult-like, particularly in the letters of Paul, who admonished early Christians to avoid teachings that distort the gospel (Galatians 1:6-9). The term "cult" today often implies not only a deviation from orthodox beliefs but also a controlling or manipulative structure, which parallels the warnings against false teachers in 2 Peter 2:1-3. Overall, while the Bible does not use the term "cult," it does provide a framework for understanding idolatry and deviations from true worship, emphasizing fidelity to God and the teachings of Christ.
