In the Bible, the term "church" is derived from the Greek word "ekklesia," which means "a called-out assembly" or "congregation." This term appears in various contexts throughout the New Testament, primarily referring to the community of believers in Jesus Christ rather than a physical structure. For example, in Matthew 16:18, Jesus states, "I will build my church," indicating that He is establishing a community of followers who will be united in faith. The church is described as the Body of Christ in 1 Corinthians 12:27, emphasizing the interconnectedness of its members and their collective role in fulfilling God's mission on Earth. The early church, as depicted in the Book of Acts, exemplified a model of communal living and shared faith. Believers gathered for teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayer (Acts 2:42), which illustrates the church's function as a nurturing environment for spiritual growth and support. Additionally, Ephesians 5:25-27 likens Christ's relationship with the church to that of a husband and wife, highlighting the church's significance and the love Christ has for it. Thus, in biblical terms, the church embodies a spiritual fellowship of believers committed to worship, discipleship, and the proclamation of the Gospel.
