expelled from the synagogue a state of having been excommunicated from membership in a synagogue In rendering JHN 9:22 it is important to indicate clearly that this is not a matter of an individual merely being forced outside of a synagogue building, but excluded from membership and thus from worship in the synagogue. In some languages this is made explicit by saying ‘his name will be erased from the list of those belonging to the synagogue’ or ‘he will no longer be able to enter a synagogue’ or ‘he will be rejected as a member of the synagogue.’

ἀποσύναγωγος is ““ποῖ found in prof. auth.” (Grimm): it is as naturally not quotable from our sources. This is of course just the sort of word that would have to be coined for use in the Jewish community.
