χριστός, χριστη, χριστόν (χρίω), the Sept. for ξΘωΔΡιηΗ, anointed: ὁ ἱερεύς ὁ χριστός, Lev_4:5; Lev_6:22; οἱ χριστοι ἱερεῖς, 2Ma_1:10; the patriarchs are called, substantively, οἱ χριστοι Θεοῦ, Psa_104:15 (); the singular ὁ χριστός τοῦ κυρίου (ιΐδεΘδ ξΐωΔΡιηΗ) king of Israel (see χρῖσμα), as 1Sa_2:10; 1Sa_2:35; (1Sa_24:11; 1Sa_26:9; 1Sa_26:11; 1Sa_26:23); 2Sa_1:14; Psa_2:2; Psalm 17:51 (); Hab_3:13; (2Ch_22:7); also of a foreign king, Cyrus, as sent of God, Isa_45:1; of the coming king whom the Jews expected to be the saviour of their nation and the author of their highest felicity: the name ὁ χριστός (ξΘωΔΡιηΗ, Chaldean ξΐωΔΡιηΘΰ) is not found in the O. T. but is first used of him in the Book of Enoch 48, 10 (cf. Schodde's note); 52, 4 (for the arguments by which some have attempted to prove that the section containing these passages is of Christian origin are not convincing (cf. υἱός τοῦ ἀνθρώπου, 2 and references)), after Psa_2:2 referred to the Messiah; (cf. Psalms of Solomon 17:36 Psa_18:6; Psa_18:8). Cf. Keim, ii., 549 (English translation, 4:263f; Westcott 'Additional Note' on 1Jn_5:1. On the general subject see Schürer, Neutest. Zeitgesch. § 29.) In the N. T. it is used:
1. of the Messiah, viewed in his generic aspects (the word, that is to say, being used as an appellative rather than a proper name), ὁ χριστός: Mat_2:4; Mat_16:16; Mat_23:10; Mat_24:5; Mat_24:23; Mat_26:63; Mar_8:29; Mar_12:35; Mar_13:21; Mar_14:61; Luk_3:15; Luk_4:41; Luk_20:41; Luk_22:67 (); ; Joh_1:20; Joh_1:25 ( () Rec.); Rec.; ; Act_2:30 Rec., ; ; 1Jn_2:22; 1Jn_5:1; ὁ χριστός κυρίου or τοῦ Θεοῦ, Luk_2:26; Luk_9:20; Act_4:26; without the article, Luk_2:11; Luk_23:2; Joh_1:41 () L T Tr WH; ; Act_2:36; ὁ χριστός, ὁ βασιλεύς τοῦ Ἰσραήλ, Mar_15:32; ὁ χριστός so used as to refer to Jesus, Rev_20:4; Rev_20:6; with τοῦ Θεοῦ added, Rev_11:15; Rev_12:10.

Winers Grammar, § 18, 9 N. 1; (as respects the use of a large or a small initial letter the critical editions vary: Tdf. seems to use the capital initial in all cases; Treg. is inconsistent (using a small letter, for instance, in all the examples under 1 above, except Luk_22:67 and Joh_4:29; in Mat_1:1 a capital in Mar_1:1 a small letter, etc.); WH have adopted the principle of using a capital when the article is absent and avoiding it when the article is present (1 Pet. being intentionally excepted; the small letter being retained also in such examples as Luk_2:11; Luk_23:2; Act_2:36, etc.); see WH. χριστός [page 693]
We cannot expect our sources to throw much light on this important verbal, but we may note that apparently the earliest ex. of its use as a title is to be found in Pss. Sol. xvii. 36 καὶ βασιλεὺς αὐτῶν χριστὸς κύριος , where we should probably read χριστὸς κυρίου , and their King shall be the Lord s Anointed.
For full discussions of the Jewish and the Christian use of the word, see Dalman Words of Jesus , p. 289 ff., Burton Gal. (in ICC ), p. 395 ff., and New Testament Word Studies (Chicago, 1927), p. 27 ff. , and Preuschen-Bauer Wφrterb. s.v.
