ξηραίνω [page 434]
With Mat_21:19 ἐξηράνθη παραχρῆμα ἡ συκῆ may be compared the interesting report regarding a persea tree, addressed to the logistes of Oxyrhynchus. The president of the guild of carpenters who had been commissioned to examine the tree states that he found it ἄκαρπον οὖσαν πολλ [ῶ ]ν ἐτῶν διόλου ξηραντῖσαν ( l. ξηρανθεῖσαν ) καὶ μὴ δύνασθαι ἐντε [ῦ ]θε [ν καρ ]ποὺ [ς ] ἀποδιδόναι , barren for many years, quite dried up and unable to produce any more fruit (P Oxy I. 53 .9 ff. A.D. 316) : cf. P Oxy IX. 1188 .19, .21, .23 (A.D. 13), and on the value and associations of the persea tree see Wilcken Archiv i. p. 127. Other exx. of the verb are BGU IV. 1040 .43 (ii/A.D.) τάχα δύνασαι ἀναβιονα [ . . ]αι (? ἀναβιώσασθαι ) τὴν ποτίστραν ( watering-place ), εἰ δὲ μή , ξηραίν [ετ ]αι , P Leid W i. 26 (ii/iii A.D.) (= II. p. 83) ξήρανον ἐν σκιᾷ (of flowers used in magic), and P Flor II. 148 .11 (A.D. 266 7) τὰ δὲ τεμνόμενα φυτὰ εὐθέως εἰς ὕδωρ βαλλέσθω ἵνα μὴ ξηρανθῇ . MGr ξεραίνω I dry.
