Do You Know Him？

Jesus. One thing. We're not about a million different things. We're about one thing. And I believe that although this world is getting, this world is getting darker and darker, I believe Jesus can turn it all around. And although my heart cries out, Maranatha, come Lord Jesus, please come back now. I'm also praying for a move of God that he withholds judgment for a generation. And that 50, 60 years from now, when we're all still here, but just a little bit older, we'll tell the stories of what Jesus did. That's what I believe. So I want you guys to stick with me for about 20 minutes or so today, 20, 25 minutes. The invitation will be public today. I'm not going to bow heads and close eyes, but I believe some of you are going to come to Jesus today. I believe some of you are going to come back to Jesus today. We're in the Sermon on the Mount, which is the, it's just the sermon Jesus preachers, by the way, is the greatest sermon of all time. Not my sermon doesn't even make that list. Okay. Shannon's might and Kay was might, but mine don't. All right. But Jesus's sermon tops the list and everything Jesus preached. It, it was radical. Like Jesus, I guess Jesus didn't read the book and how, how to like make people feel better, how to get more views and likes, you know, uh, Jesus just went for the heart. What you need today is for Jesus to go for your heart today. Because many of you are tired. I mean, you are exhausted of searching for something to fulfill what you're longing for. And I'm telling you it's Jesus, but you say, but I've tried that. Have you really, have you really Matthew? Here we are. We're in the Sermon on the Mount. And what I, where I want to take you this morning is the Sermon on the Mount goes to Matthew five, Matthew six, Matthew seven. And I want to take you to Jesus's closing illustration before he gives the invitation. All right. They taught us in sermon preparation, you know, and I, I mean, God called me to preach at 13 years old. Okay. And, uh, um, I'm not, I've been preaching for a long time. Doesn't mean I'm better at it. I've just been doing it for a long time. And they, and I remember when my pastor took me into his office, I was a seventh grader. And he took me to his office every two weeks. And he, he told me things like, sit up front in church while I do that. Not because he told me to, but because if I don't, I'm ADD, I'll pay, I'll, I'll get so, so sidetracked. Um, he said, I, uh, you know, wear a tie to church. I sometimes do that. Um, but he also said, when you, when you preach, give illustrations because it opens up so people can relate. And so as I look at the sermon, Jesus was preaching about, he gives an illustration about a moment in time. That's going to, it's going to happen. Not might happen night, might it's going to happen. It's, it's a day when everybody stands before his throne. Again, this is not a make-believe thing that's going to happen. So I want to, I want to, if you could stay in this room for the next 25 minutes, do not get out of this room. If you're on the live stream, do not go flip the 10 other live streams right now. All right. He has given a illustration of a day that's going to happen. And what he says next in this illustration, we don't want to hear. You don't want to hear because it's terrifying. So I'm not necessarily bringing you the most optimistic, positive, and I'm, I'm a, listen, if I think my, I don't know what my blood type is, but if I had to guess to be positive, all right, I'm just, that's who I am. All right. I live to make coffee nervous. All right. If I see a shark, it's not a shark, it's a dolphin with teeth. That's great. Go pet it. All right. Go swim with it. You know, I mean, that's my personality. All right. But man, this illustration, I mean, you know, Jesus, Jesus obviously wasn't trying to draw a crowd because this is what pushes people away. I'm not, we're not here as a church to try to get, how many people can we get on a Sunday morning? That's, that's, you say, if we, if we want to do that, that's easy. I just, I just put on Facebook, anyone who comes to Pleasant Ridge gets a hundred bucks every week and we'd fill it up and we'd go broke. So anyway, and then we wouldn't be able to pay Shannon and Caleb and that'd be terrible. So, um, I'd still get paid, but no, sorry. Uh, joking. Uh, here we go. Matthew chapter number seven and in verse number 21. Now, let me give you, let me just tell you this and let me, let me lay a question before you. And the question is not, do you know God? But my question to you is, does God know you? I didn't ask you in the series on Rethink Church on, do you know God? My question is, does God know you? Because there's coming a day that if God does not know you, you do not spend eternity with God. Going to heaven has nothing to do with being good or being bad. Good people go to hell, bad people go to hell. Jesus did not come to make people a little bit better. He came so dead people could live. Eternal life is not dependent on whether you know Christ, but whether he knows you. If he had a relationship with you, then you would, then he would have taken up residence in your life and you'd be filled with the spirit. Your life would be a reflection of his holiness. When he spoke, you would hear and respond to his will. Obedience, not activity, is a sign of relationship. So here's the passage, red letter edition. How many of you guys got Bibles that have red letters in them? Just out of curiosity. Okay. If we're being honest, the whole Bible ought to be red lettered, but anyway. All right. Verse 21. If you're with me, say amen. Okay. Here we go. Buckle up. All right. This is strong medicine right here, Jack. This is not for the faint of heart. You guys with me? Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father in heaven. I'll break this down in just a second, but you need to hear this again. Many will say to me. Okay. Many will say to me on that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in your name, cast out demons in your name, and done many wonders in your name, and went to Pleasant Ridge in your name, and listened to Christian radio in your name, and owned four or five Bibles we never read in your name? Hmm. I wonder what Jesus says to that crowd. Man, thanks for doing that. Man, I really needed your help. Jesus doesn't need our help. He doesn't need us. We need him. Then get this. Verse 23. So what does he say to the people that say, Lord, Lord, I got the t-shirt. I got the Christian bumper sticker. Home can you love Jesus? You know, and I've got all those things, and every now and then I put some things on Facebook that are, you know, what does he say to that crowd that talks about all the stuff they've done for Jesus, but doesn't, but he doesn't know them. He says here in verse 23, then I will declare to them, I never knew you. Depart from me, you who practice lawlessness. Lawlessness. He's obviously, Jesus obviously is mistaken. How can people who, who go to church and have a Bible, and sing the songs, and raise their hands, and come to the altar, how can they, how can he say, depart from me, I don't know you, and say that you're a, you're a, I mean, you practice lawlessness. You are a, you're a criminal, because any sin is lawlessness. We live in a day and age that we, that people don't want to be called a sinner anymore. It's not that I'm, it's not that I'm a sinner. I've just got a few issues, right? I just got, I mean, I just got some, I mean, I just got, I mean, I just got some family issues. That's it. No, you're a sinner, and only Jesus can save. Only Jesus can forgive. Only Jesus can heal. I just gave you three of the most terrifying verses in the Bible, and I'm giving them to you today, because I know many of, some of you may never be in this place again, and I would be, I would be, I would be a criminal if I did not take a moment to tell you that one of the things Jesus came to do was to turn everything on its head and, and depress people then to this idea, do you, do you know God, and does God know you? There's a lot of people, even potentially in this room today, that on that day, on that day, when we stand before His throne, and mark my words, you will stand before the God of heaven someday. On that day, He will say to you, get out of here. What does that mean? It means you will be cast into an eternity of utter darkness, of pain. The Bible calls it hell. Nobody wants to hear about hell anymore in the church. Jesus preached on hell more than did on heaven. All roads don't lead to heaven. Only Jesus leads to heaven. Sermons don't change lives. Jesus changes lives. You don't get to heaven if you don't want God. If you don't want God, you don't get to heaven if you don't want Him. And I, I, I, you say, but Pastor Malachi, again, this is, this kind of got this eerie silence in the room. I knew that would be the case today because I'm, today the goal of this message is not to upset you. It's not to, for me to beat you over the head with the Bible. The goal of this message is a personal self-reflection to ask you this question, not do you know Jesus, but does Jesus know you? Not everybody who said the sinner's prayer goes to heaven because saying a prayer does not guarantee you eternal life. Now, I said the sinner's prayer when I gave my life to Christ. I did. All right. But it wasn't the prayer that saved me. My heart wanted Jesus. You say, so what's the, what's the, what's the evidence that I am saved? Is it that I can go back and remember that I was 12 years old and I was in a, I was out in the middle of nowhere, I was in the boondocks of rural Kansas and no one was in the room and I got on the second, you know, cushion of this old couch and prayed. Is that evidence of salvation? No. The greatest evidence that I am saved is I want Jesus today. And I want, I hopefully when I wake up tomorrow, I want Jesus tomorrow. But the question of eternal life rises on this fact alone. Does God know you? Does God know you? So can I just take apart the passage today? I wish I had two hours to expound on the beauty of the gospel and all of these things. But for some of you in this room today, I just want you to shore up your salvation. Just to say, you know what, I know God knows me and I know him. For some of you today, I want you, you've been living a lukewarm Christian life. It's time to come back to God and say, Lord, I want you. And for some of you, you're in this room and you know that you know that you know that you are not born again. You need to give your life to Jesus. Let me just start here and say this. Salvation has nothing to do with what you do. Salvation has everything to do with what Jesus did. And I am not depending on my unbelievably good looks and amazing personality to get me to heaven. Why'd you guys laugh? That's not, guys, seriously? Seriously? I'm relying on Jesus for eternal life. It's not enough just to believe in God. People go, I believe in God. I believe in God. Now listen, what I'm telling you separates Christianity from 50% of the world. The gospel is that Jesus died on a cross, was buried, and three days later came out of the grave. And people that trust in Jesus and what he did, they live with him for all eternity. Jesus did not come to give you fire insurance so that you can live your life however you want to live it now, then someday go, well, I got my fire insurance. I said that prayer when I was 8, 9, 10, 11 years old. I'm good. No, you're not. If you don't want God here, you don't get him there. I'm not preaching a works salvation. I just want to tell you what the Bible says. And again, this is a strong passage. It's just meant to, Caleb, to reveal some things to us. So rather than me, I just want to go back to the scripture for a second. So look at your Bibles just for a second here. Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, and he says that again in verse 22, Lord, Lord shall enter the kingdom of heaven. Lord means boss. Lord means the one who is, he is boss. He is CEO. He's everything. I've once heard it said if he's not Lord of all, he is not Lord at all. There's a lot of people who say things. Let me ask this. Have you encountered anybody that says something to you that you, you kind of wonder, I don't know if they mean what they say. Have you ever had someone, have you ever someone tell you that they love you and you're like, I don't think you mean that. All right. Don't raise your hand. It might be the person sitting next to you. No, I'm joking. But there's people who say going to heaven doesn't mean you can say the right things. You can quote the right verses that you, that you, that you knew all the right hymns has nothing to do with what you do. Has anything to do with what he did. And the Bible says this, so shall enter the kingdom of heaven. Well, if they don't enter the kingdom of heaven, where do they go? They enter the kingdom of darkness forever. And it says, who goes to heaven? He who does the will of my father in heaven. So you mean I got to work my way to heaven? No, that's not what I said. James tells us that faith without works is dead. But if you know God, you will want to do his will. You will want to obey him. And it's not out of like duty. It's not out of a, you know, I, you know, um, many other, there's false religions out there that tell you, you've got to work your way to heaven, work your way to heaven. We don't work away to heaven, but man, when you've been born again, you know, Jesus, you want to work for God. So that, you know, people who've been born again, you don't have to beg them to want to worship Jesus. They want to worship Jesus. People who've been born again, you don't got to beg them to come church. They're the ones not looking for 25 excuses to stay home. I'm smiling because that way it's not as offensive to you. The person, you know, you don't have to beg somebody who knows God to follow God because the Holy Spirit, when you get to know God, Holy Spirit comes to live inside of you and does a transformative work in your life. Now, are we, listen, when you get saved, are you sinless? No. All right. Um, um, when you get saved, is it sunshine, lollipops, rainbows, and unicorns when you get saved? No. All right. Actually, when you give your life to Jesus and start living for Jesus, it gets hard. It gets really hard. And if you really live for Jesus, it gets 10 times harder, but it's worth it. It's really worth it. It's really worth it. I like the old Hamish, it will be worth it all when I see Jesus. Look full on his wonderful face. If things on earth shall go strangely dim in the light of his glory and grace. Oh, there was the old, uh, C.T. Studd was a famous missionary. And, uh, he had a sermon that wasn't, I mean, it was popular now. It's not necessarily popular then, but it was a sermon he wrote, Jack, called Chocolate Soldiers. Chocolate Soldiers. Well, I'm, I should post that on Facebook so you guys can see it. We've talked about that the majority of Christians today are chocolate soldiers. They have, they look like good soldiers. They look like they're ready to go, but when any heat or trial comes, they melt. We need people to say, you know what? I don't care. Come, come hell or high water. I'm going to live for Jesus. I'm going to stand in the fire. I'm going to run to the battle. I will live for him. I am not, I'm not, I'm not content with just a little Jesus. I want all of Jesus. And the thing is, the more you want God, the more you'll encounter God. And the more you encounter God, the more you'll want God. And the more you want God, the more you'll encounter God. And the more you'll encounter God, you'll want God. And I just want to tell you guys, why don't we live to be the, I mean, to be the greatest Jesus people that ever walked the earth since the days of the disciples. Why can't that be us? Jesus didn't call us to try to know how to do church. It's not about a building and an hour a week. I like a building and I'm grateful for an hour a week, but Christianity is a lifestyle, 24-7. And you're going to have bad days and you're going to have hard times, but if you've been born again, Jesus, Jesus will see you through. But here's what the Bible says. The Bible says, who does the will of my Father. So, let me ask you this question. Are you doing God's will? Are you doing the will of the Father? Well, Pastor Malik, I just kind of feel. Did I ask you how you felt today? I mean, he who does the will of my Father. How can I do the will of the Father? Follow the Son. Jesus did the will of the Father, and where did that lead Him? It led Him to a cross. Verse 22, if you're still with me, say amen. Why am I preaching this to you today? Because some of you today need to give your life to Jesus. The Bible says many. Everybody say many. Let's just pretend that number just, let me just throw out a percentage, you know, 90%. Let me just, I mean, this is not what, let's just pretend that many means 90%, just for the sake of the illustration. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied your name, cast out demons, and done many wonders in your name? Then I'll declare to them, I never knew you. Depart from me. Many. Man, I wish that word was not in the Bible. I wish it was a few people will say on that day. I wish it was just, you know, a handful of people on that day, but many, many. All right? Okay, not you guys, but everybody else stand up for a second, but not you guys. Not you guys. Stay, sit down, front row, stay, sit down, but everybody else stand up. Everybody else stand up. All right? Will the real Pleasant Ridge please stand up? Please stand up. All right, good. Why are you laughing at that? Anyway, okay. This is a few, everybody say few. This is many. Few, many. Do it with me. Few, many. Many will say on that day, Lord, Lord, he'll say depart from me. He is going to say to the masses of people, I don't know you. Get out of my house. You can sit down. That's terrifying. So am I trying to mess you up so you don't sleep at night and you're always afraid of it? Do you, do you, are you saved or not? Saved or not? No, but I want you to double-check it today. I want you to double-check it. Unless Jesus is just a liar. I mean, is Jesus a liar? Maybe he just, maybe he just, maybe he, maybe he just writes things he doesn't mean. Is that what he does? No. The reason why churches have become the way they are, and let's just start with this house, because judgment must begin at this house, is we've let the lukewarm lead the church. Not those who hearts burn with passion for Jesus and his mission on this earth. What shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his what? His soul. Man, this is not, I mean, this, this is not like the, this is not the verse under Jesus is my BFF. Jesus is not here to be your BFF. He is not here to be your homeboy. Jesus is Lord, and we've lost the reverence of Jesus as the people of God. So what do we do? What do we do? I'll tell you this and I'll close. One, I'm being extreme even in my passion this morning to make a point to you, because I may never speak to you again, you need to make sure that God knows you. And if you can live Monday through Saturday with, with, it doesn't matter how, it doesn't, doesn't, I don't give a rip. It doesn't matter. I'm just forgiven. It doesn't matter. That's cheap grace. Jesus, how shall we, you know, how shall we continue a sin? We shall not continue a sin. I'm grateful that Shannon's teaching in the book of Romans on Sunday mornings and back on Wednesday nights. And the book of Romans says, it doesn't matter if you're a Jew, Abraham, if you say, Abraham's my father, this and that, he goes, that doesn't get you eternal life. Jesus is the final sacrifice. So how can God know you? This is my final, you know, it's like pastors have like three closings. This is one of the three. Okay. How can God know? Well, to know somebody, you need to spend some time with them. Do you have any desire to spend time with Jesus? Do you have any desire to sing songs about him? If you don't know God, just singing songs and spending time with Jesus just sounds like, oh, that's just dumb. It's not dumb if you know him. It's glorious. Have you ever come to Jesus Christ and ask him to forgive you of your sins? Ask him to come into your life and be your savior. And it wasn't the prayer, but it was the fact that you wanted God. And when he came into your life, you knew things were different. Now, you may have been ups and downs, but you knew something happened. When you pray, do you hear him answer back? When you open up the Bible, do you ever weep when you see verses that minister to your heart? When you sing songs like we did this morning? I don't know if you guys caught this this morning, but we were singing that final song, and I just sensed like Caleb, like God broke in in that third song. Like, it was just like, he's here. You go, I didn't feel that. I did. Church, it's time to say, okay, God, here I am coming to you. Do a work in me. You need to be found in the place of prayer, in God's word, in God's house, seeking God. Don't let culture deconstruct you. Jesus cannot be deconstructed. I don't care what the smartest of people on the planet say. You cannot deconstruct the lion of the tribe of Judah. Jesus is all, Jesus is everything, and he's coming back. He's coming back to rule and reign on this earth, and he's looking for people that he knows. Does he know you? Only you can answer that, but if in your heart you go, I don't know if he knows me, then you need to come to Jesus and say, Jesus, I'm coming to you. I want to know you. I want you to know me. Would you please forgive me? Would you please save me? And you're not thinking it was, it was not, did I say the right words? Did I say it the right way? No. It's that you're coming to him. Jesus says, whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. The Bible tells us in 1 Corinthians 15 that we are being, that we're, that salvation has a lot to do with being saved and then standing in the gospel. The gospel's not the front door to Christianity. It's the door, the house, the back porch, and the backyard. The gospel's everything. If all we ever did was talk about Jesus in this place, that would be enough, and if you ever hear a sermon in this church that doesn't somewhat get you back to Jesus, it was just a TED Talk, not a sermon, all right? We need Jesus. I don't care how long you've been in church, one week, one, one year, 50 years, Jesus is what you need. Jesus is the only one that can forgive, and why am I saying that? I don't want you to be part of the many, the many. So imagine this, and this is my second closing, and Caleb, you can come up. Imagine if today, just use today for example, you got outside church and you found some tickets on the ground, and sure enough, they were, they were not tickets to Wonka's Chocolate Factory. They weren't golden, but man, they were tickets to this, the game today, and they weren't just any tickets. They were like box seat tickets next to the media booth, which is like the primo, primo spot, all right? And you're like, yes, I got tickets. This is awesome. God must love me, you know, and you know, and so man, you, you leave church, and you get out, you drive to Arrowhead Stadium, and all you get, you know, you're like, this is the greatest thing ever, and you start texting everybody, I got tickets, you know, and I'm going to the game, and all this stuff, and you get there to the gate, and you pull out your tickets, and they scan the ticket, and they go, let's try that again. They scan the ticket. All right, one more time. They scan the ticket, and then they say to you, oh no, this is a counterfeit ticket. You don't get in the game. You don't get in the box seat. How would you feel? Embarrassed, mortified, mad, upset, all the things that you should feel. That's just to a football game. How would you feel if you stand before God someday? You came to church, and you read the Bible every now and then, and you, every now and then you, and he goes, let me see your life, and scans your life, and goes, I, sorry, I don't know you. It's way worse than a football game. I guess today, I just want you to come to Jesus. I want you to come to Jesus for salvation if you don't know him. If you do know him, but you're living in sin, you need to repent of your sin, and come back to Jesus. You were not called, nor are you allowed to live a lukewarm life. You were called to burn for Jesus. What do you mean repent of sin? This means to say, God, I'm sorry. Give me, Holy Spirit, help me not to do that anymore. You say, what is sin? Anything that doesn't line up with what Jesus said. Yeah, that must be a bad life. No, it's a, God only gives us things to protect us. I want this to be a church who burns for Jesus. I don't want you to be part of the many, I want you to be part of the few. Third closing, and I'm done. The, do we have any Marines in the room, just by chance? Anybody have former Marines in the room? We got a former Marine in the room. You know, the Marines, when they do their, when they do their recruitment, and they enlist, they're not walking around with clipboards going, hey, would you be a Marine? Man, it's gonna be fun, and it's gonna be, I mean, we have great food, and you're gonna get to travel, and it's gonna be a blast. Would you please join the Marines? We really need some, we need some, we need the few and the proud. Would you be part of the few and the proud? Is that how the Marines get people to join the Marines, yes or no? Not at all. Oftentimes, Marines just got a booth somewhere. The recruiter is standing behind the booth, and just says, the sign says, the few, the proud, the Marines. Somebody walks up to the recruiting table there, and the guy goes, are you sure you want to join the Marines? This ain't easy. Like, you're no longer in control of your life. We're gonna tell you when to get up, we're gonna tell you when to go to bed, we're gonna tell you what to eat, and we'll probably send you off to battle. And you might lose your life. We're just looking for the few, the proud, the Marines. When someone signs that dotted line to be a Marine, they're enlisted. When you enlist, do you realize that you're in the Marines? It's a crime. It's a crime to be AWOL. Absent without leave. You know how many Christians are AWOL from Jesus today? Absent without leave. Can't find them anywhere. What if we treated Jesus much like that Marine sign-up thing? You know what might cost me my life? I'm in. I'm not in control of my life? I'm in. Tell me what you want. Tell me where to go. Tell me what to do. I am in because there's a mission bigger than myself. Church, there's a mission bigger than yourself. There is a lost world that doesn't know where to turn. There's a generation of Gen Z young people that need Jesus. God's looking for the few, the humble, the Christians. There are people in Harrisonville that are sitting in pews today that they don't know Jesus. And God's just looking for the few, the humble, the Christian to say, I'll take Jesus to them. People may laugh at the Marines. They may mock at the Marines, but they stay with it. God doesn't need any more chocolate soldiers yet. He needs soldiers to say, make the fire hotter. That's all you got? You're going to make fun of me on Facebook? You think I'm going to quit? Yeah, whatever. Not me. You say, well, I'm just too old. Nobody in this room is too old to serve Jesus. You can be too old when you're older than Caleb was when he said, give me that now. Then you can argue with me about being too old. No one's too young. Teenagers can drive a vehicle of thousands of pounds. They can take astrophysics in high school. Maybe they can. I don't know. It's been a while since I've been in high school. If teenagers can drive cars that can kill people, and they can take physics and trig, which obviously I didn't take, I think they can serve Jesus in the church. Today, will you be the few, the humble, the Christians, the church? Will you be the few that on that day, he goes, man, Terry, you made it. I knew you. I knew you'd do it. I don't think God's going to give us a fist bump or a high five or an elbow, but I just think that God knows. He knows. The Bible tells us in the book of Malachi, we're his jewels. We're his jewels. When I get to heaven, I want God to say, man, you really don't have a long attention span, do you? But no, but I loved you, Jesus. I loved you, Jesus. So yeah, I'm asking you to give everything for Jesus. I'm asking you to give everything for his mission. I'm asking you to lay down your life, your goals, your dreams, your visions for his. It has nothing to do with this church getting bigger. It has everything to do with Jesus getting bigger in your life. Let's all stand to our feet. We're not going to close our eyes. We're not going to bow our heads. Here's what we're going to do. In just a moment, I'm going to open the altar for anybody that wants to pray. Maybe you're going to come forward to pray because you know it's time to come back to Jesus. Maybe you were on fire in your 20s and your 30s, but the fire's been gone. Listen, I don't care how bad it was at your last church. That was your last church. Today's a new day. You say, Jesus, I'm coming back. I am reenlisting. I'm here. I'm also going to ask today, we're all going to pray this prayer out loud together. There may be somebody in this room today that needs to come to faith in Jesus Christ. So you can close your eyes for this moment. Just repeat this after me. Dear Jesus, I believe that you alone are God. I believe that you died on a cross to pay for my sins. And you rose from the grave and you're alive forever. I give you my life. Save me. I'm trusting you, not a prayer, not a church. Trusting you for salvation. In Jesus' name, amen. Everybody look up at me right now. Whether today you prayed that prayer for salvation, or you know you need to come back to Jesus with your life to live for Him. You're coming back from a place of lukewarmness back to fire. I'm going to count to three. They're going to begin to sing. But if you prayed that prayer or you're coming back and you just want to say, I'm reenlisting. When I count to three, I want you to come to this altar. Find a place to pray.
