The wasteland of modern evangelism is lined with the bodies of unconverted church members who are in response to an emotional appeal, merely made a mental flip for Jesus. They rest the hope of heaven upon an empty religious profession because they mistook a physical act like walking an aisle or repeating a prayer for salvation. They were never awakened to their lost condition, never came under Holy Spirit conviction, and never exercised repentance toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and therefore miss Christ entirely.
It's the rotten foundation they stand upon, creaks and moans with their every move, as the great weight of their sins can drop upon them at any time, sending them down to hell. They are baptized pagans who are not born from above nor washed in the blood, yet they name the name of Christ. Their deficiency is they've never heard the gospel.
But baptized pagans need the gospel. The gospel of the Son of God is a proclamation of the following truths. Number one.
The sovereignty of God in salvation. That salvation is in the hands of God and not man. That if you have saving faith, it's because God has given it to you.
Number two. The badness of man's heart in his ruined natural condition makes him dead in sin. And if he remains in his unregenerate natural state, there is a certainty of his eternal damnation.
Number three. The strictness and severity of the law of God and its demands of justice binding man over to condemnation, for the sentencing of the law must be carried out on all guilty lawbreakers, for he will by no means clear the guilty. Number four.
The miseries and torments of the damned in hell are unspeakable in their constant suffering under God's wrath for sin. Number five. The demand for man's duty of repentance that God requires all men everywhere to repent.
That except you repent, ye shall surely perish into a devil's hell. Number six. The necessity of regeneration, whereby the Spirit of God works grace upon the sinner's heart, taking the heart of stone and making it a heart of flesh, so that the truths of the gospel can be received and applied to the sinner's conscience.
Number seven. The preciousness and sufficiency of Christ's righteousness in the forgiveness of sins. That on Calvary, Christ redeemed us from the curse, having borne the curse for us.
That the guilt of sin was translated to Christ. That the law has been executed on him, and his shed blood has quenched the fire of God's wrath. That Christ, risen from the dead, ascended back into heaven, where he now sits at the right hand of God, exalted as a prince and savior.
And number eight. That for one to have a sure hope of heaven, he must be born from above, washed in the blood, and savingly united to a living Lord. We need a revival of the gospel today, friends, so that baptized pagans can hear it.
