What happens when we sin

Let's read again, please this time in John's first epistle 1st John chapter 1 1st John chapter 1 beginning at verse number 5 this then is The message which we have heard of him or from him and declare unto you that God is light and in him Is no darkness at all if we say that we have fellowship with him and walk in darkness We lie and do not the truth But if we walk in the light as he is in the light We have fellowship one with another and the blood of Jesus Christ his son cleanseth us from all sin If we say that we have no sin we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us If we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all Unrighteousness if we say that we have not sinned we make him a liar and his word is not in us My little children These things write I on to you that you sin not and if any man sinned We have an advocate with the Father Jesus Christ the Righteous and He is the propitiation for our sins and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world If we sin we have an advocate with the Father I Take it the clock is correct I have an 18-minute message to stretch into 19 minutes. So we'll see how that goes. I Want to just talk to you about what happens when a believer sins It's gonna be very practical and it will not be profound But I think it's something that's essential for all of us to be reeducated on some of us remind it up But also for some of us to learn maybe for the first time You know, it is very likely in a in a room like this with so many young people That there's someone who is struggling with what? role Sin has been playing in their life their failures the different times they slip and Perhaps this kind of thing is even causing you to doubt whether or not you were saved Well as a wise gospel preacher, I'm not up here to tell you that you're saved or you're not saved but I am going to tell you this a believer can sin What I'm impressed with here as I read this about our advocate with the Father is that the Lord Jesus Christ? May have finished the work to put away sin at the cross of Calvary But the Lord Jesus is actively working in our world in our experience at this time As believers the Lord Jesus plays an active role in our lives.

I Want you to think just for a second about the active role that the Lord Jesus plays in our eternal security Because I would take it according to Romans chapter 8 that our eternal security is in view Who shall separate us from the love of God? I? believe in Romans chapter 8 that our permanent Justification is being questioned by some The Apostle Paul brings before his readers his listeners, maybe That it's impossible for us to be condemned Because the Lord Jesus died and not just because he died But because he currently is risen from the dead and he ever lives to make intercession for us And the fact that the Lord Jesus Christ will never die again and lives forever is proof Positive that a believer is eternally secure in him. So I want you to understand that You can never lose your salvation Because your salvation does not depend upon you Depends upon him and he is absolutely living in the power of an endless life. I Have a friend That doesn't surprise anyone good.

I have a friend and we were chatting one time About the issue of eternal security. He's quite a character and He looked at me and he said I know people and they believe If you're saved then you sin you can be lost He said if I believe that if someone got saved I'd shoot them and That took me back just for a little bit and I said well His reasoning is they might as well die before they sin if they can lose their salvation You see some of those things just seem so far-fetched when you think of them in context of the scripture You will never lose your salvation because Christ has died and Christ is living Don't lose sight of it You will also find that the Lord Jesus Christ is active in shepherding because according to the book of Hebrews chapter 13 He is risen again from the dead God rose him from the dead. He is the great Shepherd of the sheep and he is caring for each of his tender lambs According to Isaiah chapter 40.

He is leading them. He is feeding them. He is gathering them and he is Holding them close.

I can't think of a nicer picture than that of a shepherd I know we enjoy Psalm 23, don't we? The Lord is my shepherd. I shall not want he maketh me He leadeth me. He restoreth me, but remember my brethren and sisters because the Lord Jesus lives he is always shepherding us always The book of Hebrews also connects I would I would suggest very strongly the book of Hebrews connects his high priestly ministry with his resurrection life You will read in chapter 2 that in order to become a high priest he first of all had to become a man But you will also read in the book of Hebrews that if he were still on earth Then he wouldn't need to be a priest So those two things connected tell me that the Lord Jesus could not be Officially our great high priest unless he first of all Became a man so that he could relate to us in all of the struggles and all of the trials that men and women face But also that he couldn't function as our great high priest until he became glorified Having ascended to the right hand of God in heaven the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ made it possible for him to now function in his full capacity as our great high priest And if him ever living to make intercession for us is connected with our eternal security and it is and if his resurrection Is proof that he is currently shepherding us Then let's not lose sight of the fact that we have a high priest a great high priest Touched with the feelings of our infirmities I would take it in the book of Hebrews that the Lord Jesus is Functioning as a great high priest after the pattern of Aaron That is you look at the way that Aaron functioned in the tabernacle and the Lord Jesus has used Is used as the fulfillment of that picture.

That's why the sacrifices are mentioned That's why the tabernacle is mentioned in the book of Hebrews So he functions after the pattern of Aaron But he's from the order of Melchizedek And that is remarkable. Really we heard about Uzziah Uzziah was the man who tried as king to be a priest and he couldn't But here comes one now the Lord Jesus Christ of the tribe of Judah one who was born King and one who is king and he also is a priest You see according to the Old Testament book of Zechariah He will sit as a priest on his throne and the Bible is very careful to protect that truth in the Old Testament For us when it tells us that he's not a priest as a descendant of Aaron He is a priest after the order of Melchizedek. So Melchizedek was a king He was the king of Salem and his name means king of righteousness.

So he was the king of righteousness He was the king of peace and he's a perfect picture of our Lord Jesus but remember Melchizedek functioned in a slightly different way in the book of Genesis didn't he is a great priest He came out to Abram when Abram needed the bread He came to Abram when Abram needed the wine and he ministered to Abram when he needed it at the at the very Time that he needed this strength Think about it with me He had just come from the battle of the Kings he had conquered the games He would be tired He would be weak and he would be weary Perhaps now I am speaking to someone today Spiritually you're tired Maybe weak Maybe weary What was going to happen to Abram next is that he was going to be faced with temptation from the king of Sodom So a tired weak and weary saint is now going to be tempted by the immorality of Sodom and Perhaps that's just where some of our brethren and sisters are today. I Believe young and old can be in that situation in that position But you know what Melchizedek does He comes and at just the right time He ministers to Abram to give him the strength from the bread and the joy from the wine so that when the temptation comes he's able to able to overcome it a beautiful picture of our great high priest Our brethren were talking today about this conference being timely and perhaps even being a time in the life of some believers that will be a marked change moving forward But it could just be that you're going to get something at this conference that's going to prepare you for the trial That's coming That's what our high priest does So he ever lives to make intercession for us our eternal security He's risen again from the dead that great shepherd of the sheep Constantly shepherding his people He is our great high priest touched with the feelings of our infirmities And we are told to come boldly to the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need But he is our advocate with the father Please be careful when you study the great high priest. He is not the great high priest in light of our sin He is the great high priest in light of our weakness to face the temptation He is our advocate if we sin, so what happens when a believer sins? I believe it's essential to understand first of all What happened why a believer sins our brother William brought before us Romans chapter 6 I think it's good to understand what is really going on in the life of a believer When it comes down to it each one of us has the flesh within according to the book of Galatians We find in chapter 5 that the flesh Lusts against the spirit and the spirit against the flesh so that you cannot do the things that you would I hope you are Aware, and I hope you are not negligent to acknowledge the fact that within you According to the Bible there is that flesh that flesh that wants to respond to sin That flesh that produces all of those works the adulteries and the fornications and the pride and the blasphemies all of those things that are listed There in Galatians chapter 5 are not only things that other people can do follow this with me, please young man They're not only things that other people can do and they're not only things that unsaved people can do Paul is saying in Galatians chapter 5 These are things that are possible to be done by a person who's being dominated and controlled by the flesh within Even a believer can be guilty of those works of the flesh And the reason I say that is because I don't want you walking around all proud thinking that that's for someone else the inside of you There is the flesh And we are told in that context to walk in the spirit and we will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh and the battle There really is between the spirit and the flesh But we learned something in Romans 6 That we died Thank you for that We learned that we died.

So when it comes to sin having dominion over us We are not a debtor to sin to serve it in its lusts So we are no longer under the authority of sin We are no longer bound to serve sin because we have died with Christ We are no longer bound to serve sin But the resurrection comes into play in chapter 6 as well because it's pictured in our baptism Not just dead buried with him in baptism, but raised again from the dead So we live in connection with his resurrection So not only are we dead to sin and we are no longer bound to serve sin But we now have the power to yield our members on to righteousness dead to sin alive to God so simply again You do not have to serve sin Because of your death connected with the death of Christ and you have the power to serve God Because of your connection with the resurrection of Christ so now the flesh within And the temptation comes What do you do? It's factual. We are dead. We have died But what do you do when the temptation comes? See you have the option you can yield your members as instruments of unrighteousness Really it you can yield your members as weapons in that war to unrighteousness Or you can yield your members on to God and righteousness That's what it means to reckon yourself dead it has to be a Conscientious reckoning that is an accounting that is consider what God has just told you I am dead And I'm not going to respond You have the choice To yield to righteousness but but John says if we sin if we sin we have an advocate with the Father Jesus Christ The righteous now I'm going to take this in its in its whole in the section and say what happens when we sin well, first of all, we have a resurrected Lord Jesus Christ who is our Advocate now the word advocate there is the same word that is used for the comforter in John's writings in his gospel Some may know it to be the paraclete It's really one who draws alongside one who comes near maybe to comfort but one who comes near to exhort to an activity or an action I Want you to think about that? I? Also want to want you to think that this could be taken two different ways and I think both of them are legitimate Although if you're a Bible student, you always have to be really dogmatic that you're right If for you Bible students there is significance In the word Prost being connected with the accusative then I believe it teaches this I believe if we sin the Lord Jesus draws alongside of me and he is my Advocate to bring me back into fellowship with the father if the accusative means that brethren It means that I have an advocate toward the father.

It's a nice thought It is something to remember that when you sin the Lord Jesus doesn't say that's it I need to separate myself from that child. I need to wash my hands of him or her until they clean up their act No, I believe he begins his activity as advocate the moment I sin why he is Intensely and intimately interested in restoring my communion with the father That's what he wants But If the accusative means nothing Then we have an advocate face to face with the father, which is fine, too It's nice to see But he is there he is interested He is moving and he is working to bring me back into happy communion with the father And that's really what it is, isn't it? When a believer sins, you don't lose your salvation The believer sins You do lose your joy When a believer sins Your communion and harmony with the father is interrupted And the advocate moves But what are you to do What are you to do? I think we move in the knowledge that the blood of Jesus Christ his son cleanses us from all sin Thank God for that brethren. There may be someone here dealing with guilt today.

You've confessed your sin You've told the people who need to know and you still move around with a guilty conscience remember that the blood of Jesus Christ in the book of Hebrews is that which is far superior to the blood of bulls and goats because It cleans not just the outside It's able to purge the very conscience from guilt and the blood of Jesus Christ his son cleanses us from all sin But what do you do? If we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all Unrighteousness what happens my brother my sister When we acknowledge in the presence of God our sin immediately Immediately the fellowship. I don't like using the word fellowship there immediately The communion is restored Immediately there's no longer anything in between me and my father But you know some of you I say you because I knew all of this before I was saved. I Didn't it's okay to smile guys.

It's okay Think about this Think about it What is confessing? What does confession mean? Does it mean I'm sorry No, I'm sorry is an apology. And I think we should be sorry. We should be repentant when we sin But confessing is not saying I'm sorry Confessing is actually Acknowledging that what God sees as sin in my life.

I now call it sin. I Call that losing my temper sin Those are the ones I'm struggling the most with lately brethren is anger. It's impatience.

It's losing your temper I hope you don't sweep that under the rug and say oh well My communion is not interrupted just because I lost my temper at the girl at Starbucks when she got my order wrong Be careful. Those are sin. That is sin You got to call it sin.

And when you call it sin and God calls it sin, then you're in agreement That's what it means to confess our sin to name it as sin in his presence And if we confess our sin, he is faithful just To forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness
