God lives and works today. How easy it is for us with our limited understanding to thank God for the good things that happen to us, but to rebel whenever anything unpleasant comes along, to say that can't be God's will. The life of Jesus and the lives of his first followers are a testimony that a life as a Christian isn't supposed to be a life without suffering.
What then is the purpose behind our suffering, behind the cross in our lives? The answer is in today's meditation by Basilea Schlink, The Fourfold Key. Imagine having a secret key that could open the doors of a treasure house, which otherwise we would never be able to enter. In a way, that's what we need for our spiritual life, a key that would open all the doors to the blessings and treasures hidden in our cross and our suffering.
God gives each one of us a cross to bear. Sometimes it's a problem or a handicap. Sometimes it's a person whom we must bear and love.
But whatever it may be, God's given it to us as a gift which will bring us infinite blessing. How can we discover the blessing in our cross? Through the teachings of our Lord Jesus, we can find a clue. We've summarized these for you today in four catchwords that are like a fourfold key that can actually open the door to the treasure in our cross.
When we use them correctly, we'll discover that Jesus' yoke really is easy and His burden really is light. The first of our four catchwords is, from the Father. That means that my cross doesn't come from my neighbor or my boss or my children or my mother-in-law, from my circumstances or from anything else, but from the Heavenly Father who has designed it for me in love.
The second catchword is, I need it. My cross was made by God expressly to suit my weaknesses and sins so that they will be put to death. That's why, for example, the proud will receive humiliations, the impatient will have their patience tried, and so on.
The third catchword is, with Jesus. That means my cross unites me with Jesus, the cross-bearer. The greater my acceptance of my cross, the closer I'll be drawn to Jesus, for the way of the cross is Jesus' way.
And the fourth catchword is, to heaven. Without Calvary, there would have been no resurrection. Jesus makes it quite clear that He only considers those who take up their cross to be His disciples.
In fact, He says, the others are not worthy of me. We can choose to bear the cross with Jesus and taste eternal happiness already here on earth, or we can refuse and stay miserable. Do you want to find the treasure in the cross? Remember the fourfold key, from the Father, I need it, with Jesus, and to heaven.
Yes, when we use this key, we'll find the purpose in our suffering, and the Lord will be able to bring us closer to Him. Yes, it will unite us with Jesus and open the doors to heaven. Cross-bearing, blessed pain.
Glory, its final aim. Loaded with gold is the cross. Bringing grace, holy stone.
