Jesus the True Physician

God lives and works today. He is all-powerful, omnipotent. He always has ways and means to help us.

But how can we experience this in our lives? How can we experience it when we've been struck with illness? Listen to the following message by Basilea Schlink called Jesus, the true physician. Our Lord Jesus Christ is the true physician. In the fifth chapter of John, we read how he went to a person who had lain ill for 38 years and said, Rise, take up your pallet and walk.

But why did he single out this one particular invalid from among the many sick people at the pool of Bethesda? It could not only have been because the man had already been ailing for 38 years, but because his soul was sick with sin. This we gather from Jesus' words in John 5, 14, Sin no more, that nothing worse befall you. This sick man, therefore, was suffering from a twofold disease.

He suffered in body and soul. And perhaps the disease of his soul even increased during those 38 years. He may have fallen into the sins of rebelliousness and bitterness.

And so Jesus longed to help him before it was too late, for he knows that the sin-sick condition of the soul is a more serious matter than physical sickness. Thus Jesus wishes to remind us in our illnesses that we should fear the cancer of sin, which will lead us into destruction far more than the diseases that harm our body. In full confidence, we may bring our sicknesses to him who says, Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, Matthew 11, 28.

Then we'll experience that he gives us rest by healing our bodies or granting us inner consolation and peace. Our first and foremost concern should not be how Jesus chooses to help us in our sickness, but rather that our souls will be healed of the cancer of sin. If we are prepared to confess our sins and let them be cleansed by the blood of Jesus, we'll always be strengthened in our illnesses by his forgiveness, solace, and encouragement.

And when Jesus doesn't restore our physical health, we'll experience an even greater miracle. By fully surrendering our will, we shall be changed into Jesus' image of patience, humility, and love, and become a new creation for all eternity. Therefore, once again, Jesus is all-powerful, omnipotent.
