God is Not Mocked

God lives and works today. He is a loving God, but at the same time He is holy. He acts according to our faith, words, and deeds.

Today's meditation by Basilea Schlink is a true report about how a mountain farmer discovered this truth. In a beautiful mountain countryside, we wanted to erect a small chapel to the glory of God. But the people of the surrounding area objected strenuously to this undertaking.

A certain farmer, while speaking with his neighbor, said sarcastically, When this small chapel is finished, all my cows will fall down on their knees and worship. However, the chapel was built in spite of all the attempts to hinder the project. On the day the building was completed, one of this farmer's cows lay dead in the stall.

After a few days, the second cow died, then the third and the fourth, all without any apparent medical explanation. This frightening event shows us one thing, as we can read in Galatians 6, verse 7. Do not be deceived. God is not mocked.

God is a holy God. As we read in Hebrews, it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. He is like a consuming fire.

Being patient, He often delays His judgment because He is waiting for people to repent. How often we think, He doesn't see the things we do wrong. We think that God doesn't hear the bad things we say about others, or the thoughtless things we say about Him and sacred things.

Yet He remembers, not only all our actions, but also every single word we say. In Matthew, chapter 12, it says that by our words we will be justified or condemned. Perhaps we've already experienced God's intervention in our lives.

Perhaps we judged people or made negative remarks about them. And then, even though they didn't have the slightest knowledge of what we had done, God punished us through their behavior. Such incidents should help us to become spiritually awake and to repent.

To confess our sin and bring it to the cross of Jesus, so that He can wash away our guilt with His blood. Use this time on earth to repent of sins. Judgment, here and now, as the farmer was judged when his cows died, is nothing in comparison to the eternal judgment that will decide our fate for eternity.

That is why our Lord Jesus calls to us, Do not be deceived. God is not mocked. Live your life before the face of the Holy God in everything you do and say.
