Peter Xu

Peter Xu Yongze (1940–present). Born on October 9, 1940, in Henan Province, China, Peter Xu Yongze grew up in a Christian family, the fourth generation of believers, amid a nation under Communist rule. Called to ministry at 25, he founded the Born Again Movement (also called New Birth or All Range Church) in the late 1960s, an unregistered house church network emphasizing repentance and emotional conversion, often marked by weeping. His preaching, rooted in evangelical fervor, led to millions joining the movement, though estimates vary widely from thousands to 20 million. Xu’s bold evangelism and criticism of the state-controlled Three-Self Church resulted in five imprisonments, including a three-year sentence in 1997 for leading an “illegal” group, with authorities likening him to cult leaders, a charge he and supporters disputed. Released in 2000 after international advocacy, including by 47 U.S. Congressmen, he fled to the United States in 2001, granted asylum, and founded the Back to Jerusalem Gospel Mission in 2003 in Santa Monica, California, to train missionaries for the “10/40 Window.” He authored Back to Jerusalem (2003) with Paul Hattaway, outlining his vision for global evangelism. Details about his personal life, including family, remain private. Xu said, “No matter how badly you treat me, I deserve worse.”
