Bakht Singh

Bakht Singh Chabra (1903 - 2000). Indian evangelist, church planter, and Bible teacher born in Joiya, Punjab (now Pakistan), to a devout Sikh family. Educated at Punjab University, he studied agricultural engineering in England (1926-1928) and Canada (1929-1932), embracing a Western lifestyle, including smoking and drinking, while rejecting his Sikh roots by shaving his hair. Initially hostile to Christianity—once tearing a Bible apart—he converted in 1929 in Winnipeg after reading the New Testament, influenced by Christian friends John and Edith Hayward. Returning to India in 1933, he began preaching as an Anglican evangelist, later becoming independent, sparking the 1937 Martinpur revival, a pivotal movement in Indian Christianity. In 1941, after a night of prayer in Chennai, he founded Hebron Ministries, establishing over 10,000 indigenous churches modeled on New Testament principles across India and South Asia. Singh authored books like How I Got Joy Unspeakable and Full of Glory and held annual “Holy Convocations” in Madras, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Kalimpong, drawing thousands. Married to Rama Bai at age 12 in 1915, little is recorded of their personal life. His contextualized gospel, blending Indian spirituality with biblical truth, earned him the title “Elijah of the 21st Century” in Indian Christendom. Singh’s words, “I have never asked any man for anything, but the Lord is richly supplying all my needs,” reflect his faith-driven ministry. Despite Parkinson’s disease in his final decade, his legacy endures through Hebron’s global network and writings, praised by figures like Ravi Zacharias.

Sermon Transcription
Family Prayer Message on Mark Chapter 5 was released by the Lord's Servant Brother Bakshin on the morning of 13th November 1968 during the All India Holy Convocation gatherings held at Ebron, Hyderabad. In Mark Chapter 5, we have a living God speak this portion from his word. Shall we have a prayer once again? Living Heavenly Father, in the name of Lord Jesus of Australia, we send thee, Father, to give you power of thy word. May you be in moments to prepare us for the whole day. Do teach us how to make it upon thy word and dig deep into it. Help us how to use thy word proximately for all our needs and activities. Give us the grace to obey thy word and honor thy word. Help to hear thy extra small voice day by day through thy word. Thus increase our love for thy word. And make us men like Biriya who knew how to speak thy word diligently. Thy word be strengthened by us the whole day. Thy message be brought to us from thy word. Father, go to stay and be heard by us. We pray in the name of the Lord Jesus of Australia. Out of so many miracles which our Lord Jesus performed, the Holy Spirit has just selected a few, even gospels, to enable us to enjoy fully the great solace in Lord Jesus Christ. Our Lord Jesus performed many miracles, but the Holy Spirit has written a few miracles in our scriptures, so that we can enjoy the great solace in our Lord Jesus Christ. They say that miracles, Lord, are parables and parables are miracles. Because in every miracle you find many, many spiritual truths and lessons summed up. That men of all classes and all ages be able to understand that message. That the beauty of the word of God. Whether we are highly educated or completely illiterate, yet to find equal enjoyment in God's word, a commitment to God's word, Whether we are highly educated or completely illiterate, yet to find equal enjoyment in God's word, a commitment to God's word, Now can I hear attentively a few thoughts in this chapter we have read together. First two. When he was come out of the ship, immediately they had met him, Out of the tombs, a man with an unclean spirit, dwelling among the tombs, and no man could bind him, nor knot with chains. Now what a clear picture we have here of a sinner. Yes, but we are asinine before God. But we don't know our true condition asinine. How corrupt, how defiled, how rotten we have become asinine. How corrupt, how defiled, how rotten we have become asinine. Now you find India, the white ants are very common everywhere. How they eat away the timber and the wood, unknown to many people. We had some beam of that nature in the back room of the main bungalow. And they look very nice. But one day we saw something falling from the top. And by sounding we found out how the whole beam was eaten completely by the water. Outside was very nice, but inside was very bad. Very strong timber beam. Because it looked straight and also it was well painted. But the white ants had found their way from the one end, and slowly had made the whole thing eaten up. But the white ants had found their way from the one end, and slowly had made the whole thing eaten up. Inside nothing but only dust. Now that is our condition before God. In the eyes of God, we have become asinine. Even though we may look on people, nice people, good people, cultured people. God fearing people. You can see very devoutly, but our whole nature is sinful, corrupt, defiled, rotten, worthless, useless. That is why here we are talking about our old nature. How can we compare such a man with an unclean spirit living in a tomb? First of all we are told he was living in a tomb. Secondly, a naked person. And thirdly, he had to be bound with chains to be kept in some place. And even then he would break the chains asunder. And no man could save him. But you might not have seen such a person living in your village or town or country. So you might have seen such a person in your village or town or country. I have seen black people in my village. We astronauts are more happy in tombs than in graveyards. We astronauts are more happy in tombs than in graveyards. These cinemas are before God only graveyards. These cinemas are before God only graveyards. For all the worldly pleasure places, entertainment, nothing but graveyards. For all the worldly pleasure places, entertainment, nothing but graveyards. The theatres, dancing halls and drinking places, all these are the same only graveyards. The theatres, dancing halls and drinking places, all these are the same only graveyards. Because all you find, all those who go there, they come under the power of death more and more. Because all you find, all those who go there, they come under the power of death more and more. In some parts of the Himalaya mountains, there is something of snake. In some parts of the Himalaya mountains, there is something of snake. Very very nice shining bright eyes. Very very nice shining bright eyes. And that's very clear upon the birds. Very very clever way of reflecting the birds. Very very clever way of reflecting the birds. And you see the tiny birds here and there hopping about. It sits very still with the head coming up. Very very nice shining bright eyes attracts the birds towards it. It remains still. And the tiny bird without knowing what it is, slowly hopping towards it. And the tiny bird without knowing what it is, slowly hopping towards it. They are so charmed by the nice shining bright eyes. And the snake remains very still. And the bird goes on hopping slowly towards it. And the bird goes on hopping slowly towards it. And it comes very near. Then all of a sudden it goes around the bird. The birds are broken and the bird is swallowed. The birds are broken and the bird is swallowed. And that's how remember please, all the places, cinemas, theatres, all the places of sin will accept you like that. They get glory and beauty, outward glory. And that's how they attract you and slowly pull you towards them. Same way the worldly friendships. All these other worldly parties. Before God they are tombs, graveyard. None that man was found naked. No one could cover him. No one could harkness against him. In these days, when you go to America, Canada, Europe, Australia. They are America, Canada, Australia. You will be shocked to see how men and women are going about half naked. And when they go out to any night parties, again half naked. They take a playa in their nakedness. Half naked. They have no sense of guilt anymore of sinful life. Now when you fall in some sin. Then gradually you will take pride in your sinful life. Then you are told that man had to be targeted chain, but even that could not be held him. And that's how you find the thoughts of hatred, enmity, and jealousy, and lust. And greed will overpower you. And you won't be able to control it. Other people's advice or counsel would help us. We are told here, no man could tame him. No man can ever help us to control these evil thoughts and just start up. When he saw the Lord in his life, he called him, yes, son of God. Now just by saying, Lord Jesus is God, he will save you. That's how many Christians believe. They say they believe in the Bible, they believe in Lord Jesus Christ and so on. And like a parent, they suddenly repeat the apostle's creed in their Sunday services. By the repetition, nobody is saved. A sinner must accept the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal saviour, depending on their sins. And believe he died instead perished. And whenever the Lord wanted to cast out those demons from their person, they got up, they wanted permission to go in the swine. They will be more happy here. This is the way. And what then? And if he started a mutt, he would not send them out of the country. They were nine, more than eight, out of swine. All they have to start is sin. Send out into the swine. Personal. Ten to twelve. Here they are before Lord Jesus Christ. They could have asked anything more. But now they ask only, please allow us to go in the swine. They knew, they were far more happier there than in the place. They knew, they were far more happier there than in the place. And when they are Guntur swine, they are more happy in a filthy place than in the place. They are happier in a filthy place than in the place. And that is how you find here, our good friends are here in convocation. People go, we offer them plenty of water, to wash themselves, anything where they go for bathing. We offer them plenty of water, to wash themselves, anything where they go for bathing. We have provided at least seventy-five good bathroom latrines for the compound. And nobody is seeing them going in some corner, behind some building. Only by walking a few yards, they find a very nice place, good place, plenty of water. Only by walking a few yards, they find a very nice place, good place, plenty of water. But they are more happy in their filthy place than the place also. And that is how they fulfill the scripture. That is human nature. And when the Lord will change your nature, you will be more happy in a filthy place than a good place. But thank God, Lord Jesus Christ commanded, and the demons were cast out in the swine. And they perished. Verse fifteen, And they encountered Jesus, as seen in the presence of the devil, had the legion sitting, and clothed right mind. And they encountered Jesus, as seen in the presence of the devil, had the legion sitting, and clothed right mind. Then you find these three great changes in your life. Longing to sit at the feet of the Lord every day. Longing to sit at the feet of the Lord every day. Before you begin your day, you go at His feet. In the daytime, again, Lord, teach me something. In the daytime, again, Lord, teach me something. There is a growing longing to sit at the feet of the Lord, each time, to know more about Him. There is a growing longing to sit at the feet of the Lord, each time, to know more about Him. Secondly, He was clothed. Secondly, He was clothed. We have already seen that man had no clothes. At that time, there was nobody nearby. He had no friend or relation in the graveyard. We all were dead in the grave. There was no cloth shop in the graveyard. Where did the clothes come from? The Lord Himself gave him those clothes. They were not given to him by neighbors, or friends, or relations, or strangers. They were not given to him by neighbors, or friends, or friends, or strangers. Lord Jesus Christ was clothed by Him. When you are born again, you know you are clothed by the Lord Himself. The Lord Himself is clothing you. The Lord Himself is clothing you. When you are born again, you know you are clothed by the Lord Himself. This darkness that has been created by our sins, is not covered by our friends, or others, or anyone else. It is covered only by the Lord Jesus Christ. This darkness that has been created by our sins, is not covered by our friends, or others, or anyone else. In Galatians 3.27, it is said that Christ was clothed by Him. In Galatians 3.27, it is said that Christ was clothed by Him. In Galatians 3.27, it is said that Christ was clothed by Him. He was clothed by Him, and became the Lord of the nation, and the garment of glory and beauty. And now they see it is already right. It is already right mind. How did they find out he had the right mind? These men came and they saw him sitting and not speak. The Lord was speaking. The man was listening. If you see from his shining face, what he heard, he understood as he was lying. But before that, he could not sit still. He was in this way all the time. Now he was sitting and hearing attentively. And that's how we also become. Before you are born again, whether we came in a meeting at home, we could not sit still. We found ourselves wandering constantly. We could not understand the voice of God. And no pleasure in seeing God. Now we feel inspired and encouraged by going up to Him. Our whole spirit becomes strengthened. Further please. Verse 17. And they began to pray him to depart out of their course. What a strange thing. What a strange thing. Rather than saying, Lord, we are so thankful to you, leaving that man from the demon, will you please now come and stay in our village for a few more days? Will you please now come and stay in our village for a few more days? He did not say that. He said, Lord, please leave us and go. Why? They first saw what happened to swine. They found out. In their home there were men and women, other kind of demons. If you come to us, and we cast out the demon in the same way, because they knew there are so many young men, young women, so many demons in their many homes. They thought we will lose all of our swine. And they were living upon the swine. That is why your worldly friends are going to hate you, and spy on you, when you are born again. Because your changed life is a challenge. Because your changed life is a challenge. Those who take bribe, they cannot take when you are there. And that is why they will devise many schemes to get you transferred somewhere. They want to live among swine. They don't want to be lived from a poor doctor. A lot of rules. For 1920, how we dearly suffered him not to let him go home to his friends, and tell them how great things were done for him. He departed and began to publish in the Indocopolis, how great things they had done for him. Now Dekopolis means 10 cities. Dekopolis means 10 cities side by side. There you have Hyderabad and Secunderabad side by side. There were 10 very holy cities side by side. Even today you can go and see the ruins of those Dekopolis cities. I had the privilege to see those ruins of Dekopolis a few years ago. I had the privilege to see those ruins of Dekopolis a few years ago. And going by the ruins of those cities, you can see how in those days it was so highly advanced city, very very highly advanced, full of luxury. When you see the ruins of those cities, you can see how in those days it was so highly advanced city, very very highly advanced, full of luxury. When you see the ruins of those cities, you can see how in those days it was so highly advanced city, all kind of building for every theatre and all kind of pleasure can be seen there. all kind of building for every theatre and all kind of pleasure can be seen there. Very very precious stones are found in all those buildings. Very very precious stones are found in all those buildings. But they are only in the places of sin. But they are only in the places of sin. Graveyard, tombs, this man was first living in the other tombs. Graveyard, tombs, this man was first living in the other tombs. Now he came to the other tombs, the living tombs. Now he came to the other tombs, the living tombs. When you go to Kerala, brother Philip's country, When you go to Kerala, brother Philip's country, you find there many many old church buildings. You find there many many old church buildings. When you go inside, you find the front portion full of graves. you find the front portion full of graves. Very very big graves. Very very big graves. Many many years ago, Many many years ago, when I was walking in the graveyard, when I was walking in the graveyard, so many graves. so many graves. Then he came in a meeting. Then he came in a meeting. He reached the building. He reached the building. Even there are some graves. Even there are some graves. But one difference. But one difference. Outside is a grave. Outside is a grave. Inside walking graves, when they start singing, like a funeral, what do you do, what do you do? They don't know what prayer is, they don't know what worship is. They don't know rituals and candles and other darkness. In the courtyard of the grave, inside walking grave. Now Lord, you have sent man to Decapolis. They were feeling sorry for this man, look at that man, living in the grave and naked from a chain. When he came in Decapolis, he saw the wealthy people living in sin. And going about half naked, and straight away he was healed. He found a high place and began to preach. He began to say, you all know about me. I am living in the tomb. Who are you? I was naked. And so are you. My Lord clothed me. He can also clothe you. You are bound in chains. Who are you? Chains of tobacco, chains of liquor. And he came in the chains of Decapolis. Deeper, deeper. He is a man of Decapolis. Bound in the chains of tobacco and liquor and other shameful things. You see, he was saying, my Lord broke my chains. Now my Lord also broke your chains. You know, I was behaving like a mad man. And who are you? You are living a life of shame. I am faithfulness to your husband and wife. And like mad people you waste your money and time. Now my Lord gave me heavenly wisdom. He asked him to come here with him. Now he is privileged. That man became the first witness for you in Decapolis. Such a dark place. But this is God's way. He saved that worthless man and became a mighty victim. And that's how you also can become. Lord will send you to your Decapolis. And make you the bold witness, see how my Lord has changed my life. Twenty. And in the past year began to publish Decapolis. How great thing he has done for him. And all men did marvel. All men did marvel. And we pray all of all these saints to some day to call us in these days. And we can testify very boldly. See what my Lord done for my life. How he delivered me from the power of death. How he broke my chains. And delivered me from many demons. The demon of lust, the demon of anger, hate, is the demon of this world. He is my heavenly wisdom. He is my heavenly wisdom. We find how people all across the world wonder and marvel. This man, this person, this woman, how he changed. All men did marvel. May our loving God give us the testimony to this. May our loving God give us the testimony to this. Let us pray. Lord, we thank you once again for drawing our attention to this portion of the Living Word, St. Mark, Chapter 5. We thank you for showing us from thy word our true inward condition as sinners as it is seen by thee. We are terribly ashamed how almost all of us were in the same condition as that man living in the tombs, bound with the chains and refusing to be clothed. We thank you for the day when all the demons were cast out by thy word. We thank you for breaking our chains and binding us to many sinful habits. We thank you for covering us with the garments of glory and beauty that we may enjoy thy abiding presence. We thank you for the longing given to us in thy feet, ears, words and thy voice. We magnify thee, loving Father, that we are thy witnesses in Decapolis. We pray that many among us may stand that way after we have heard thy word through holy convocation. O God, without accompanying you, work not upon us. Forgive us for the past failures and negligences. Make us thy bold, shining witnesses in our towns, cities, villages, colleges, universities and fields. Make us thy bold, shining witnesses in our towns, cities, villages, universities and fields. Those who are still bound with the chains of some kind of rebellion, another worldly player, a worldly friendship, a foreign friendship, may have their chains broken by thee. Those who are still bound half naked or fully naked with the garment of glory and beauty, Those who are still half naked or fully naked with the garment of glory and beauty, may have their chains broken by thee. All of us become thy witnesses in any Decapolis that happens to go. Lord, be with us the whole day. Bring thy word from thy soul. Take our time magnifying. Once again we bind up our darkness. We rebuke all the demons. We gather thy feet in every gathering. Bring thy word from thy throne in every gathering. We are standing in the midst of Decapolis. And the whole day we amuck to thy presence. We pray in the name of the Lord. Yes, we are. Now unto Him, able to keep us from falling, and present us, thoughtless friends of the glory, receiving joy. To Thee, only, one and only Savior, the Lord's great glory be the power, both now and forevermore. Amen.
