Sermon Transcription
I beg you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called. What is that calling with which we have been called? What is your calling? What is the call of God on your life? You know it says the will of God for us is sanctification. That's the will of God for our lives. What is that calling? It's to be set apart for the purpose of pleasing Jesus. That's the calling he's speaking of. When he says walk worthy of the calling, you've been called to be set apart to please Jesus. That's what we've been called to. To be set apart from the way that we used to live. He says we need to walk worthy of that calling. That means we need to be obedient to what God has called us to do. Some people think they've been called here or they've been called there. Well that may come out of the being set apart calling. But that's not the primary calling. The primary calling is to be sanctified. This is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. Your sanctification. Your being set apart. And if you're not set apart, God can't use you. If you're still getting trespassed and you say I want to hear God's voice, I want God to use me, you're going to be getting mixed messages. The first and foremost thing you need to do is to walk worthy of the calling in which you were called. But why are we not all set apart from the world? Why are we not set apart? God has called all the children of Israel to be set apart. When we look at 1 Corinthians 10, he says that all passed through the cloud, all went through the Red Sea, all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. They were all brothers. But then if we read further, he says with most of them, God was not pleased. And this morning, God is calling us as priests and a kingdom of priests unto Jesus Christ. He's calling us to walk worthy of that same calling. We set ourselves apart, maybe even from relatives and brothers and friends, some of us, to follow the voice of Jesus Christ. No longer listening to the voice of Moses, but following on the voice of Jesus Christ, which supersedes the voice of Moses. I'll be a living sacrifice. With all holiness and gentleness, with long-suffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace, we sing this song. Bring to mighty walls! Bring to mighty walls! Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit until we come to the unity of the faith! Some people may sing that song and say, bring to mighty walls! Between the Jehovah Witness and the Catholic, between the Mormon and the Mennonite, those walls, those are not the walls! The walls is between brothers who are led by one Spirit, endeavoring to keep the unity of the faith, those are the walls! Because there's no unity between Jesus and that dormant Catholic that may have been lusted after in the wilderness, let me tell you that for sure! There's no unity there! Those who worship you, worship in spirit and truth, those who say that they know, must walk as they walk. Those who worship you, worship in spirit and truth, those who say that they know, must walk as they walk. Verse 13, for brethren you have been called to freedom, freedom in Christ. Oh and do not use that freedom as an opportunity for the sinful nature, but through love serve one another. This is unity, with all lowliness and jealous, serve one another through love! Some people have accepted Christ in their small hands in the faith, and that while they're coming to maturity, they're doing things that they are not, but there's an endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit until they come to the knowledge of what God requires and being set apart yet further from that old life. This is the unity, this is the wall that is coming down, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit until we come to the unity of the faith, the same understanding of Jesus Christ and His will for us, the same understanding of what it means to be set apart as a Christian. Galatians 5, 16, walk in the Spirit, and you shall not, you will not, you must not fulfill the lust of the flesh. That can tell you one thing, that those who walk according to the flesh and those who are led by the Spirit, there is a dividing wall, because there can be no unity between one who walks according to the way of his will and the one who walks according to the way of Jesus. When the leader had stood here with Moses and said, we are with you, and all the eleven who lusted and exuded after that golden calf, and they called that Jesus, there was a dividing wall and the sword divided. You know, it says not all Israel is Israel. There were twelve tribes in Israel, and when God called them to walk in and possess the land, there were twelve spies that went and bought that land. And when they all came back, and they all spoke with unity that the fruit was good, and everything about Jesus was good, and the land that God was giving was good. Let me tell you, ten of them just, they said, yes, excellent. But then they went and they took their whole, and they just said, you can't have it, because it's not possible. There's giants in that land. Yes, it's good, but you can't have it. Just took the whole thing away from them. Just broke their face and raised it right off them, giving no hope to people, just started to cry. But then there were two others who had a different spirit, different than all the other brothers. All the brothers didn't have the same spirit, let me tell you that for sure. There were two of them, Joshua and Caleb, and it said there was in them a different spirit. Well, if they had a different spirit, what kind of spirit did the other ten brothers have? Another gospel and a different Jesus. There was a dividing wall between Joshua and Caleb at that point, and between the other ten spies. They were brothers, yes, they were all Israel, yes, but not all Israel is Israel. And when most of them, God was not pleasing, their bodies, it says in 1 Corinthians 10, were scattered to the wilderness. And he says, we're written for our example, that we might not fall after these lusts. So I say that in Galatians 5, in verse 16, walked in the spirit, and you will not, you will not fulfill the desire of the sinful nature. When you're led by the spirit of God, there will be unity, even if there's mature, immature people who have a good spirit. But as soon as those immature people go back to the darkness, there is a dividing wall, let me tell you that for sure. Because the flesh hostile against the spirit, it says in 17, and the flesh lusts against the spirit, and the spirit is against the flesh, and these are contrary to one another. So that you do not do the things that you please. There's a dividing wall, there's a contrary, distinctive wall between people who are led by the spirit of God, and those who are led by the spirit of their own sinful lusts. The rest of Israel, let it be that way. And there was a sword between them, let me tell you for sure. Let's look at 1 Corinthians 11, verse 18. For first of all, when you come together as a church, I hear there are divisions among you, and in part I believe it. For there must also be factions among you, that those who are approved may be recognized among you. What is he saying here? Is he saying that he agrees that the church of Christ should be divided? May it never be! The church of Jesus Christ should never be divided. We endeavor to keep the unity of the spirit until we come to one understanding of Jesus Christ.
