Sermon Summary
This sermon emphasizes the importance of the fear of God in the Church of Jesus Christ, highlighting how the lack of fear leads to moral decline, abuse of grace, and living in sin without conviction. It calls for a revival of holiness, character, and selflessness, urging believers to rediscover the majesty and holiness of God and the sinfulness of sin. The message stresses the need for a Spirit-filled life, prayer, and a deep sense of eternity consciousness.
Sermon Transcription
Everywhere I go now, there is no fear of God. I see it now in the Church of Jesus Christ. See, if there's no fear of God, there is no fear of hell, there is no fear of retribution. And that's why we have such a divorce rate. That's why our young people are falling into such immorality. We have megachurches all over the world now. And they preach an easy gospel. They preach nothing that will offend. They preach a soft message. There's no fear of God in the house. People can live in fornication and adultery. And there are thousands of people Now, one word about sin. So there's no fear of God in the house. I see the abuse of the grace of God. I see people living in sin because they're not being convicted by a message about the fear of God. Satan says, look, there's the Church of Jesus Christ. She's 26 translations of the Bible. She's more churches than ever in history. There are more people professing the name of God. He said that the church is sleeping. Let it sleep, says the devil. For if the church ever wakes up and harnesses its manpower and intellectual power, it will shake the world. He doesn't care a who about the church today. We have no power. Our people can't live in victory over sin. God is just as holy now as he was in the Old Testament. He hasn't changed in any way. He hates sin today as much as he did before the Lord Jesus died. And he must deal with it as he did before he died. There's no change in regard to God's attitude towards sin. The fear of God is a holy awe or reverence of God and his laws, which springs from a just view and a real love of the divine character, leading the subjects of it to hate and shun everything that can offend a holy being, and inclining them to aim at perfect obedience. Proverbs 16.6 says this. You don't have to turn to your Bible. It's the same in your Bible as it is in mine. By mercy and truth, iniquity is purged. And by the fear of the Lord, men depart from evil. By mercy and truth, sin is purged or cleansed. I ask you what I said. By what? By the fear of God, Scripture says, and by the fear of the Lord, men depart from evil. By mercy and truth, sin is purged. What we need now is a revival of holiness, a revival of character, a revival of people who are utterly selfless and prepared to lay their lives on the altar for God. The church has to rediscover two things. One, the majesty of God and the holiness of God. And the other, the sinfulness of sin. Prayer is not the easiest thing in the world. Prayer is the hardest thing in the world. And prayer is the most demanding thing in the world. And when the short-lived revivings and awakenings come from the hand of God, they are so short-lived, and in those times we promise God we'll never return to our passivity, that it's not long, it's just weeks or months and we're back, and this time we slip further back into passivity than when we started. You see, you either walk away and go back to your passivity, and say, I'm just going to be an ordinary Christian, and there's no such thing. You know, our problem today is we have too many dead men giving out dead sermons to dead people. I believe that with all my heart. And it is the Holy Ghost that convicts of sin. And you eliminate the effectiveness of the Spirit of God from our preaching, from our theology, and you have a sinning church, because there is no longer conviction. But you also have a powerless church. You shall receive power after the Holy Ghost has come upon you. We have so dispensationalized this word, that the Spirit of God can no longer do what the Spirit of God was sent to do. But you see, I see the abuse of the grace of God. I see people living in sin because they're not being convicted by a message about the Spirit of God. Her delight every day is to say, Crown Him Lord of all. Oh, that with yonder sacred throng. She said it in Scots, so you could understand it, I couldn't. Oh, that with yonder, we are His pre-made throng. Is it a bit late to do it when you get there? In God's name, why don't we do it now? Why don't you take the time out every day to crown Him? Don't come begging, say, I haven't come for anything. You see, we're time conscious, position conscious, possession conscious, personality conscious, but we're not eternity conscious. You write eternity and stick it on the mirror where you do your pretty face of every morning, or on the kitchen sink somewhere, and see it every day. We're not supposed to live in this world like other people. If you claim to be Spirit-filled, you'll have a far more difficult judgment than the man who never claimed to have. Before God, there's nothing I want but to live this book. And now they're coming out with statistics and polls. They can tell you how many heathens there are in China. They give you polls and charts. But not the slightest idea. They have all these how-to books. Now, you won't hear one word about anguish, tears, and brokenness. You won't hear that. I believe God is looking for a church today, and Christians today, that are willing to obey Him to the place where they seem absurd in the eyes of a wise generation, in order that God can do something so wonderful that no man can get the credit for it. As we sing sometimes, it will be worth it all when we see Jesus. Lifestyles will seem so... Lord, we look so stupid in your presence. It doesn't take persecution and prison and privation. Lord, we get a heartache if we have a flat tire. We're distressed over trivia. Lord, give us some heroic spirits. Give us some holy boldness. Take away this unholy coldness. Lord, reduce this flesh to nothing. If there's still flesh, take it, put it away. Lord, we don't want to live in minimum Christianity. God, help us. We've lived too long in waters to the ankles. We've not pushed into waters to the knees or waters to swim in. We've handicapped ourselves. Our eyes have been unanointed. Our souls have been without passion. I was horrified the first night when they opened the conference with a comedy sketch. It went from bad to worse. We were hoodwinked by the leaders. There was not a single prayer, not one mention of prayer. It was a farce. And I'm as empty as I've ever been. A very fundamental of Christianity is sacrifice. And if there's no sacrifice, there's no success. I don't care how it looks in the newsletters. Again, he's making you, he's not making the deacon in your church. He's not making our friend, he's making you. He doesn't care what house you live in, how big it is, how small it is. He's concerned with the size of your head, no, the size of your heart. How much you love him, how much you adore him. How much you're living for him, for his will, for his glory. I'm so sick of men getting the glory of God. What are you reading? You're reading the Spirit of God is in you, the Spirit of the Son is in you, the Holy Ghost is in you. But why are you such a miserable failure? Why is your Christian life so erratic? Why do you need a revival meeting to warm you up and then tomorrow morning, you're not going to be God's chosen, you're God's frozen. Come on, let's stop boasting. The Spirit of God dwells in me. The Spirit of Christ dwells in me. The Holy Spirit dwells in me. A threefold cord is not easily broken. We are the habitation of God, forget all about glass houses.
