Five Stones - Part 1
Bakht Singh

Bakht Singh Chabra (1903 - 2000). Indian evangelist, church planter, and Bible teacher born in Joiya, Punjab (now Pakistan), to a devout Sikh family. Educated at Punjab University, he studied agricultural engineering in England (1926-1928) and Canada (1929-1932), embracing a Western lifestyle, including smoking and drinking, while rejecting his Sikh roots by shaving his hair. Initially hostile to Christianity—once tearing a Bible apart—he converted in 1929 in Winnipeg after reading the New Testament, influenced by Christian friends John and Edith Hayward. Returning to India in 1933, he began preaching as an Anglican evangelist, later becoming independent, sparking the 1937 Martinpur revival, a pivotal movement in Indian Christianity. In 1941, after a night of prayer in Chennai, he founded Hebron Ministries, establishing over 10,000 indigenous churches modeled on New Testament principles across India and South Asia. Singh authored books like How I Got Joy Unspeakable and Full of Glory and held annual “Holy Convocations” in Madras, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Kalimpong, drawing thousands. Married to Rama Bai at age 12 in 1915, little is recorded of their personal life. His contextualized gospel, blending Indian spirituality with biblical truth, earned him the title “Elijah of the 21st Century” in Indian Christendom. Singh’s words, “I have never asked any man for anything, but the Lord is richly supplying all my needs,” reflect his faith-driven ministry. Despite Parkinson’s disease in his final decade, his legacy endures through Hebron’s global network and writings, praised by figures like Ravi Zacharias.

Prabhupāda says, in Hindi, that if you want to know the meaning of life, you have to know the meaning of death. If you want to know the meaning of life, you have to know the meaning of death. In my mouth will I make known my faithfulness to all generations. I want you to note again the very same fragment, last part, first verse. And make known my faithfulness to all generations. That means, throughout all eternity. Not only upon this life I am found here, but throughout all eternity. Because God's grace is going to be shown to us in abundance throughout eternity. And that grace can never be exhausted in any part of eternity. Upon the earth we are only a game or a sport is. But the work which begins will go on throughout eternity. Now we have been seeing how this experience of God's faithfulness begins at the time when we repent of our sins and have them fully forgiven. Therefore we are seeing how God's faithfulness begins with us when we repent of our sins and have them fully forgiven. And we saw that in 1 John chapter 1, verse 9. And we have been seeing how God has used, in the past centuries, his two-legged muscles to show unto us the secret of our unjoined faithfulness. And that's why you find God's word coming to us so precious all the time. That's why you find God's word coming to us so precious all the time. No other worldly book can come to us so precious or so fresh. No other worldly book can come to us so precious or so fresh. You may read any good book for a number of times, but you will soon get tired of it. You may read any good book for a number of times, but you will soon get tired of it. And that's why you find so many good books lying on the shelf full of dust, never used for many years. And that's why you find so many good books lying on the shelf full of dust, never used for many years. But you see how the Bible is being read again and again by young and old. But you see how the Bible is being read again and again by young and old. And everybody gets something new from it. And many times we say, well, I never thought before, even though I read it so many times. Now this is a full book of Samuel. Samuel's first book, chapter 17, verse 40. And he took his staff in hand and chose him five smooth stones out of the book and put them in a shepherd's bag, which he had given in a script, and he slung it by the hand and he drew near the first thing. I'm sure most of you who are part of the larger style are familiar with the well-known story of David and Goliath. You small children love the story. And your parents would love to tell it again and again to children. And your parents also have this very famous lesson by the Sunday school teachers. And also many preachers love to talk about it again and again. And yet you find the messages in the story are not yet exhausted. Do you want to see something about these five stones David had? Verse 40. He took his staff in hand and chose him five smooth stones out of the book and put them in a shepherd's bag. He took his staff in hand and chose him five smooth stones out of the book and put them in a shepherd's bag. See God uses throughout in our lives many many simple things to prepare us for our future ministry. Unknown to David, God had chosen him. He was very happy looking after his father's sheep. And he was very happy in doing it because he was doing it very faithfully. He was very happy in doing it because he was doing it very faithfully. He was very happy in doing it because he was doing it very faithfully. As you see in verse 34. And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep. There came a lion and a bear, took a lamb out of the flock. And I went out after him and smote him and liberated him out of the mouth. And he was against me. I caught him by the beard and smote him and slew him. And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep. There came a lion and a bear, took a lamb out of the flock. And I went out after him and smote him and liberated him out of the mouth. And he was against me. I caught him by the beard and smote him and slew him. And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep. There came a lion and a bear, took a lamb out of the flock. And I went out after him and smote him and liberated him out of the mouth. There is no way you could buy a small kid or a lamb for about five rupees. There is no way you could buy a small kid or a lamb for about five rupees. Now see, who will risk his life for five rupees? Who will run after a lion for five rupees? Who will run after a lion for five rupees? What are you saying? So jolly and very boldly. Now the girl's father told him. But he learned from the beginning himself, from a youth, how to be faithful. But he learned from a youth, from a youth, how to be faithful. That's why he went after the lion and brought back the lamb from the mouth. That's why he went after the lion and brought back the lamb from the mouth. And that's how God made him a good shepherd. And that's how God made David a good shepherd. And he also writes a wonderful psalm, 23, about a good shepherd. And you find that psalm, 23, has been used by the Lord throughout the world, throughout the centuries, among all people, to inspire, to encourage and strengthen. And you find that psalm, 23, has been used by the Lord throughout the world, throughout the centuries, among all people, to inspire, to encourage and strengthen. But see, God had a still higher purpose, bigger purpose, in giving him the opportunity to be a shepherd. But see, God had a still higher purpose, bigger purpose, in giving him the opportunity to be a shepherd. You have never seen him, some of you. They can kill many animals. They can kill many animals. When they are watching at night time, they don't use, though there is any gun, to watch it. That is shepherd's link, that stone. That's how lion, bear, tiger, wolf were being killed by David, with this shepherd's link. That's how lion, bear, tiger, wolf were being killed by David, with this shepherd's link. And he became very skillful. And he was sure that by one stone, he could kill even a giant. And that's why he had shown a great boldness now, before the guardian. And we see how, with only one stone, he killed him. And you see how, with only one stone, he killed him. He was forty-nine. And David put his hand in his bag, took a stone, and slung it, and smote the person in his forehead. And the stone sunk into his forehead, and he fell up and fell down. He was so slung by David, it went away with the most speed of bullet. Otherwise, it won't sink deep in the forehead. It was not an ordinary head. And that stone sunk deep inside. It was so cleverly slung and sent out. He had to have a very, very clever shot. That means, he would have been doing it for some time. He was not even sure in the job. And that's why he is called in the Bible, a valiant man, a mighty man. So he was taking much pride in those five stones he had. He could say, now I can kill a lion or a tiger or a bear or any animal. It may come near my flock. He could say, now I can kill a lion or a bear or any animal. It may come near my flock. He never had to use more than five objects. Any hunter. Sometime wouldn't even be sufficient. And very rarely he wanted five. And that's why he brought with him maximum number five on that day. These five, he was bringing these five stones. In a similar sort, he had pride in himself. And he had some self-confidence. 1 Samuel 16 1 Samuel 16 1 Samuel 18 Now stood one of the servants and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse, the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in play, a mighty valiant man, a man of war, and footed in matter, and a comely person. And that's what he said about him before he killed Goliath. Sir, before he killed Goliath, he said these words about David. Thus, he could take pride in fighting. Cunning in play. Not only organ, but every instrument. Not only organ, but every instrument. Indeed, he would even play chimta. He was very, very happy that way. He was very, very happy that way. The whole world could see it. The whole world could see it. He wanted the world to see him play chimta. But David, he could play not only one, but many instruments. he could play not only one, but many instruments. He could play very skillfully harp and guitar. He could play many instruments. He was a very brave man. He was a very brave man. He was a very bold man. A man of war. Willing even to fight with a lion. And also a footer in matter. But generally shepherds are very foolish. But generally shepherds are very foolish. Why do you find this man was a wise man? He was a wise man. A familiar with many good things. And also a good looking man. He could say very proudly. He could say very proudly. He could say he was proud of his five stones in shepherds ring. Same way he was proud of the other things. Same way he was proud of the other things. He could say one day I will rise very high. But evidently he was not ambitious in the worldly sense. He was ambitious to serve God. He was ambitious to serve God. He is chapter 71st Samuel. And verse 14. And they were the youngest and the three eldest followed Saul. And they were the youngest and the three eldest followed Saul. I don't see young men who are ambitious for the worldly honor and worldly jobs in the army. Maybe they became a colonel or a major or even a captain or an army soldier. I don't see young men who are ambitious for the worldly honor and worldly jobs in the army. But in the army even a soldier is very proud. See in the train they would not even come in sight. See in the train they would not even come in sight. They could command the whole train. Now these men are following Saul for worldly honor. Now these men are following Saul for worldly honor. If David wanted he could have also joined the army. Because by David's cunning plan Saul was lured by his spirit. Because by David's cunning plan Saul was lured by his spirit. The first time it was the 15th century. It came to pass when he was praying and God was upon Saul. David took an harp and played with his hands. So Saul was refreshed and was well. And he was departed from him. He could have also been given some very good position in the king's army. But he preferred to be a shepherd. But he preferred to be a shepherd. At the same time we are reminded here. He had a gaze real for God. We see verse 26. Verse 17. And David said to the man. So by him saying what shall be done to the man. David cleared his frustrations. David cleared his frustrations. Who this uncircumcised Christian should defy? The living God. Who this uncircumcised Christian should defy? To defy the army of the living God. That is going to show what he really had for God. This shows us how great a human energy and human qualification he had to serve God. But he had the foundation to serve God on the basis of his human ability and human courage. In the beginning Moses was in the same condition. In the beginning when he saw his people being oppressed by the Egyptians. In the beginning when he saw his people being oppressed by the Egyptians. He killed the Egyptians. In the end he ran away. Out of 40 years God emptied him and saved him. Out of 40 years God emptied him and saved him. And for the very same process now being applied to David himself. God will save him. Now do you want to serve me and enjoy my faithfulness? Then don't depend upon these five stones in your strength. You don't depend upon the other five qualifications that you have. God said I will take away these five stones and give you something better than your five stones. God said I will take away these five stones and give you something better than your five stones. And that's why we see in the life of David his five great experiences. As if God was taking away those five stones one by one. As if God was taking away those five stones one by one. And giving him back something better, something more precious, more useful to him and other people also. That's how God works. He takes away something from us for a purpose. He gives back something better. Now for example, God spoke to me clearly in the month of April 932. God spoke to me clearly in the month of April 932. He said I will not take away anything from you. We are six brothers in the family. We are six brothers in the family. So I was saying I have my one sixth portion of land, of a building, of a factory, of property. I was saying I will give God all my portion. I didn't want for myself. So I kept on saying, God is calling my father, give me my portion happily. I want to give it to you. God said to me, I don't want that. I don't want that. I will not pray. Why don't you want it? I am not going to fight for it. I won't go to court for it. If father gives me happily, I will take it. That's my moral legal right. And I want to give you for your service. God said to me, Have you forgotten how did your father make the money? Have you forgotten? I remember how he used to bribe to make money. He was a government contractor. I saw many times giving bribe to engineers. I knew all about it. God said to me, That's why I don't want my money. It is a default money. God said to me, Now remember, don't tell anybody other by letter or by suggestion about your need. Now remember, Don't tell anybody other by letter or by suggestion about your need. You don't have to take any salary from anybody. Why thought in the beginning? How I am going to manage? Last year I gave up my property also. I don't tell anybody anything also. Also don't take any salary. But I obeyed. Lord, I agree. Lord, I agree. Now that is much more gravity. Much more, much more, much more, much more. Never that. Whatever God says, give. Give joyfully. Not going by the ordinary standard. He was the most admirable young man in the whole country. Very high qualification. But before God, He is nothing. He is extremely weak and foolish. God said to him, I will take away these five stones from your sling. I will take away these five stones from your sling. And I will give you something far better. In the beginning, he could not understand. And we saw how from the first stone, God, God, and plague of Adam. God, God, and plague of Adam. See that time, he was so much depending upon himself. For power, for victory, for fame, for everything. See that time, he was so much depending upon himself. If God, because of his such a might and such a cleverness, He will be much appreciated by everybody. God, because of his such a might and such a cleverness, He will be much appreciated by everybody. But a very high qualification became his enemy. And that is why Saul became jealous. How to kill him three times? But God brought him to Adulam for a purpose. Adulam is a resting place. And the same time he brought the aviator, the high priest, Nephite. And there he learned how to speak with God. That is the first stone. By that stone you can kill any demon. We don't defeat devil by bible knowledge. Or by long prayer. Or by fasting. Or by putting on simple clothes. We defeat devil by knowing, by doing God's will. And that is what our Lord was saying in Gethsemane. Matthew 26. And the verse 39. Nevertheless, as I live, let thou live. Oh, what a weapon we have. What a stone we have. We really go on doing God's will every day very faithfully. You find devil being defeated automatically. But that's why devil learn that lesson. How to hear the voice of God. How to speak with God. How to find God's will. And how to obey impersonally by finding it. And then for the second stone God brought him to Kila. We saw last evening, how he had done a great favor to those men of Kila. They were being oppressed and exploited by the Philistines. Saul had failed them. But David, by hearing the voice of God, obeying the voice of God, delivered them. David sought to stay in Kila, sir. David said, I am very safe over here. I have done such a big favor to these people. Surely David will not even risk his life to protect me. He was so sure. Because he did a great favor in fighting for them. But God told him, go away from Kila. These men are trying to betray you and hand you over to Saul. You find what he was told first. 1 Samuel chapter 23. And what's told? Last part. And Lord said, they will deliver you. Lord said, they will hand you over to Saul. First part says, they will deliver me and my men will hand you over to Saul. David said, will the people of Kila hand you over to me? Lord said, yes. Now what did this man say? He said, how do you hope in the name of Kila? Risking his own life and never mind he came there. Many same people are now going to hand him over to his archenemy. But that's how God taught him a lesson. That's how God taught David a lesson. Not to put himself in any man. Jesus Psalm 118. Psalm number 118. Psalm number 118. First verse 8. It is better to put trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man. Verse 9. No. It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in princes. And that's why God brought him to Kila. A time will come in our lives. And the most intimate friend whom we love so much and love much for them. They will betray us. And you wonder. This person. That person. This person. For whom I did so much. No. No. They are my enemies. Don't be surprised. That's how we are taught to put our entire trust in the living God alone. And that's how we prove God's faithfulness. Psalm 27. And verse 10. When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take me up. It's for that purpose God brought him to Kila. Even though outwardly the meaning of Kila is a fort or a citadel. Kila means fort. Kila. But God was saying, don't depend upon that. Don't put your entire trust on your arm of flesh. Oh, for his life and life, we have to put our entire trust on the living God. Some have their eyes upon friends, nations, the naval, America, England, other countries for their help and support. Oh, what a shame. That's why you find many people so barren spiritually. Oh, what a shame. That's why you find many people so barren spiritually. We don't know how to put our entire trust 100% on the living God. No doubt in the beginning God had told him also that nobody will ever receive you because of the fear of God. But now he thought, surely this is a different case. But now he thought, surely this is a different case. I have done so much for them. And surely they will lay their necks for me. They will lay their necks for me. They will lay their lives for me. But, everything is important. God is faithful. He has not forsaken him. No, sir, you go on obeying me. I will help you. Now, thirdly pray. 24th chapter. First chapter 24. First you know the last chapter 23. And David went up from Thames and dwelt in stronghold at Engedi. Last verse. There again God is showing him a third stone for him. He is on the first one responsibly. At that time Saul was his most bitter enemy. Now he came very near him. If he wanted he could have stayed away from him. He was about to smite. But God smote him. And warned him. Don't touch him. He is my anointed. So David let him go. And that happened on two occasions. God will not allow us to use worldly weapons against our enemies. Even though they may hate us and spite us and curse us. Even though they may hate us and spite us and curse us. But God's people, we can never use a worldly weapon against them. They curse us, we bless them. They hate us, we love them. They want to kill us, we want their salvation. That's our third stone. To prove God's faithfulness. Our faith is. God will not allow any weapon of the enemy to prosper against me. Many years ago. One man wrote a very long letter against me to Saul. And I found out. And a friend of mine came to me. In other friends, somebody else. And he said to me. Brother, you give me power of atoning. I'll give you power of atoning. I'm not going to court against that man. You give me the power of atoning. You give me authority. I will not spend all the money. How dare he say such a filthy thing about you. I'll go to court. I called him. I believe in Isaiah 54-17. No weapon against me shall prosper. In every judgment thou shalt condemn. I told him I believe in God's word. He won't allow any weapon of any kind to prosper against me. As long as I'm in Israel. For three months, I went on a prayer with that man. Every time I met him in the street, I spoke to him nicely and kindly. And when we met in the streets, Never let him think I knew all about what he'd done to me. And he didn't even let me know that I knew everything about what he'd done to me. Because he'd done it secretly. Because he did all this in secret. I don't have a passport against me. I don't have an alimony bill. And three months, he came to our meeting. After the meeting, he spoke to me. After the meeting, he spoke to me. Brother, give me five minutes to speak with you. Even in tears. I said, before you speak, I forgive you. He said, but how do you know what I want to say? I said, I knew it three months ago. I found out what he'd done three months ago. And I forgive you three months ago. And I will pray for you. And from that day, we became best friends. We don't use violence against enemies. We don't use violence against enemies. We know, for God's word, We are going to be harshly abused for the Gospel's sake. Hated, despised, and cursed, and abused, and cursed for the Gospel's sake. In the same manner, If you don't take bribes in your offices or schools, You won't get promotion. If you don't take bribes in your offices or schools, You won't get promotion. And you'll be tempted to give bribe or take bribe. But we can't use worldly weapons to fight it. We leave it to God. When God's time came, he killed Saul himself. Now please hear from the fourth stone. God, God will appraise. First Samuel chapter thirty. Now verse one. Here they will have the most humbling, humiliating experience they ever had. In chapter twenty four and chapter twenty six, God has told him clearly not to touch the law of the natives. But now in chapter twenty nine, he became impatient. He heard that the Philistines were going together in different countries against Saul. He also wanted to join them. Even though previously he was inquiring from God before going anywhere. But now he became impatient. Without consulting God, he is joining the Philistines. And they became suspicious. But who knows, he may leave us, start another battle, and again go and join the master Saul. I assure you, I will be with you. I assure you, I will be with you. How can I go back to my enemy who wants to kill me? But he lost all the trust he kept in God. Now he can't trust you. He better go back. So looking very sad, he came back. When he came to Siklak, he discovered two days ago, he found everything burnt. All the house burnt. Nothing there. Wives gone, children gone, everything gone. They began to weep. Then David and the people with him lifted their voice and wept. They had no more power to weep. Wept so much. Who will weep? No more power to weep. Now ladies have the privilege to weep at night. They can sleep any part of day and night. They can weep at any time of day and night. Nobody can question them. They can weep at the bus stand, railway station. They can weep in the morning, evening. They can weep in the morning, evening. They want money, they can weep. Whatever they want, they can weep. They can weep at any time of day and night. That is their privilege. But men cannot. Men start weeping and suddenly gone. Here are these men, fighting men and ordinary men. And now they are weeping very, very loudly. Their sorrow was so great. Because their women and their children were taken captive by the Americans. So much so, they even wanted to stone David. And David's companions were so angry that they wanted to stone him. And they were really distressed for the people's fake arms stoning him. And David was very distressed because people were so angry and were talking about stoning him. Because it was David's mistake. Because he had to have consulted God before he joined the Philistines. He was going to God and God helped him. And now he became impatient. There are occasions in our lives when all of us become impatient. We say, well, I am bored sufficiently. I am bored enough. Now I cannot bear any longer. I cannot bear anymore. We feel so discouraged. If we are impatient, many people have done things without finding God's will. And that's why you find today, there are women and their children kept captive to sin and darkness. That's why you find so many unhappy homes and broken homes. That's why you find so many young men and young women living in sin in so many houses of evil. And the parents are now weeping for them. Because they failed sometime, somewhere, in finding God's will for them. And that's why now they are shedding tears. But God says, in 2nd Timothy, 2nd Timothy, 2nd Timothy, 2nd chapter, 2nd Timothy, 2nd chapter, and verse 12, I am sorry, verse 13. And if we believe not, yet He abideth faithful, He cannot deny Himself. We may fail Him. But God won't fail us. He abideth faithful. Anytime we go back to Him and humble ourselves, He forgives us. He enables us to recover every loss. So we see in verse 7, how David repents. And David said to Abiathar, the priest, I mean like a son, I pray thee, bring me the report, and Abiathar, report to him. So David said to Abiathar, bring me the report, and Abiathar brought the report to David. And David inquired to the Lord, saying, shall I pursue? And thou shalt surely overtake them without fear of the Lord. And David said to Abiathar, bring me the report, and Abiathar brought the report to him. And David asked him, shall I pursue? And he said, pursue, for thou shalt surely overtake them without fear of the Lord. He asked him earlier, But God will never force us to come to Him. We must go to Him willingly. So David repented. And he sent for Abiathar. And God spoke to him. Now I forgive you. Now you go and overtake the Amalekites and recover all. Even he is speaking, no hope of recovery. Because the Amalekites were in large numbers. They had many weapons. Many weapons. But David had nothing. Whatever they had was taken away by the Amalekites. Whatever they had was taken away by the Amalekites. But David obeyed God. In a very simple way, on the way they found an Egyptian. All were dying. So they gave him some food. He was revived. And he found out, he was one of the servants, one of the masters of the Amalekites. And on the way he fell sick. His master left him there. All were dying. They revived him. And by the help they found the praise of the Amalekites. And they found him eating and drinking. They served him. And they smote all the Christians. They smote, killed them. And they recovered their women, their children and much more they lost. They brought back a great fire. They brought back a great fire. So much so, they were able to pay every debt of past 8 years. About 26 years. When David came to declare, he sent a smile on the altar of Judah, even to the saints. Saying, Behold a present for you, a smile of the army of the Lord. When David came to declare, he sent a smile on the altar of Judah, even to the saints. Saying, Behold a present for you, a smile of the army of the Lord. Saying, Behold a present for you, a smile of the army of the Lord. He left responsibility. Where David himself and men were wound to heart. All the places. All the places. For 8 years, he as a man had to find shelter in a swimming basin. Somewhere he stayed one day, two days, three days, as yet maybe. Somewhere he stayed one day, two days, three days, as yet maybe. Then he, being a man of God, he kept the account clearly. He knew what he received. He knew what he received. Somewhere ordinary food, somewhere good food. Somewhere only charu, somewhere only chicken. Somewhere only charu, somewhere only chicken. He knew everything. Accordingly, he sent us money back. There are some believers, they are very very clever in borrowing money. There are some believers, they are very very clever in borrowing money. When they come to you, they are so nicely, so sweetly, so lovely, so kindly, they are very sorry. They will tell you their story in a very beautiful, in a very sweet way. I will pay them next month. I will pay within a week. Every month two weeks. Now, one week gone, two weeks gone, one month gone, one year gone, five years gone. They are equally clever to forget. They are very very clever in doing so. But they kept account of everything. And he paid every debt joyfully, not by compulsion. And above all, he recovered his spiritual loss. That's our fourth stone. Every loss can be recovered by humbling ourselves. He abided faithful. We may deny him, we may fail him, I don't believe in him. He, he abided faithful. And by believing in that, every loss, any crime can be fully recovered. Most of you have suffered a very heavy loss through your many many shameful mistakes. Even though you are a believer, and you knew how to find God's will, but somehow you became impatient. Because of mother's pressure, father's pressure, anybody's pressure. But now you are sorry. You want to recover your loss. Come at his feet again. With a full humility. That's our fourth stone. The recovery of every loss by coming back unto God wholeheartedly. There is one more stone left. We leave it for tomorrow. That's equally precious stone. The Lord offers you a good sling with five stones. With these you can kill the enemy. You can defeat any attack of the enemy. You can defeat any attack of the enemy. Let him come against you like a lion, like a wolf, or like an angel, or like a flood. Let him come against you like a lion, like a wolf, or like an angel, or like a flood. Ask God to give you those five stones. Ask God to give you those five stones. God will take away your five stones. You can't have both. We want God to help you in every situation. And enjoy his faithfulness. Claim these five stones. Now we are going to pray. May we request you and may we beg you, please do not move till we have done prayer. May we request you and may we beg you, please do not move till we have done prayer. Wherever you are.
