Sermon Transcription
Number one, faith reckons on God. He said the key here is verse 6 in chapter 11. He that cometh to God must believe that he is. And faith reckons on him. If faith is going to be tested, it's going to be tested. And if you only think I'm wrong this morning. So faith reckons, faith, yes. He said that the people here were being attacked by, well, people who followed the faith of their fathers. By the same token, people who were being challenged. Ah, ah, but listen. We have now a fourth chapter and it's well worth considering. There remaineth a rest for the people of God. Amen. There remaineth a rest for the people of God. Amen. You preach on the first afternoon since it's 1911, 10 years. Faith, my yoke upon you. I need to find rest. There isn't anything that's rest. Always been this rest for fear of the, for the people of God. Then I wonder how many. But what's the secret of rest then? Resting. Ah, what's the secret of being at rest? Faith, my yoke upon you. I didn't hear it again. This is always it. I don't know how many pages, but it's a fantastic. I remember coming to see how old I am. I said, I was looking at the track. I said, because if this thing, the only reason that this. If it gets off the track. I said, well, stand up and give me a joke. He was going, the secret of its freedom is it's under control of the track that it's on. My freedom is lying. His yoke is easy. We sing often, don't we? Burdens are lessened at Calvary. If you say at Calvary, let me know. He'll take the burden of the sins. But if you do something great. My dear wife and she was. As a matter of fact, we had a crusade. And she thanked God for the feelings of coming to the house. He said on an occasion. I would not be afraid. To be the ruler of whatever he gives me, the Scottish sheep. Their burdens are lifted at Calvary. Burdens. Now, he said yesterday that. Read the 2nd Letter of Paul to the 2nd Testament. That ye may be delivered from ungrief. Now, the first requirement of God for a sinner. The first thing he has to do is repent of sin. Whether he's attacking you or not. I have prayed for you that my faith fail not. If you drop the shield of faith. Then all the fire is out so that he can get to you. If you keep that faith intact. The devil may batter him to all he likes. And he's got. You know, Jesus had no sin. But he had sorrow. And there's no guarantee you won't have sorrow. He would say sometimes. Oh, Mary, don't worry. Shakespeare said it's always easy to bear the burden. All is easy. Now, when you pray to him and say. The Lord is with you. The first three. Looking unto Jesus. The author and. He's begun it. He's going to perfect it. He preached. Well. Two. Looking unto Jesus. And. He's going to perfect. That was confirmatory. Now, Shakespeare again says. He's done good work in you. And he's perfect. That which is in you. Whatever he's started. He's going to perfect. He's the author. And he's the finisher. All right. Look what he says in the next verse. Consider him that endureth. Such contradiction of sinners against himself. Lest ye do weird and strange in your minds. You see, he endured contradiction of sinners. He did that, don't he? He said of the Lord Jesus. Before he went to the dust. And he wasn't happy. As he went into that. Amen. It's your faith he said. And he doesn't do it capriciously. He's been washed there in the blood. But. I don't think that piece is perfect. It's been ironed out. Some of us are looking for. Not 60s lessons. Now. All men have not faith. Until they're born again. And they do. It says there in the. It talks about. Having a measure of faith. I've got to do what Paul says. That he prayed for some people. He prayed for them night and day. That when they see that. They'd faith. It was deficient. By praying for it. No. It was by. I say to young people sometimes. My muscles are hard. To find. Because I never did much work. I never chopped down trees. I never. I never swung hammers. So I don't have much muscle. Our fellow comes along. He says. Well I've read it. Asked my wife. Every night. A couple of cokes. And two packets of Fritos. And I've had my feet up. And I've. I've clenched on the Fritos. And I've drunk the. The coke. And. And. And I've read the. Well I. I know. Well I can't. No more. Well the Lord says. Be you wife. Do as in the word. Do as in the word. The apostle Paul says. Love one another. And he says. But can't. He came to me afterwards. Well I have a brother in law. And he did so. Well I can't. He quit praying. He saw me over to the devil. That's what Paul says. Doesn't he. That he's done right. Hunting some people. Yes. Satan can bruise them. And bring them to justice. Well he laughed at me. Within six months. He was on his hands and knees. At my door. Now sometimes. God will use Satan. That's an interesting story. I'll go on it some other time. Maybe. Whichever happened to that. But anyhow. Ah. It's very interesting. At least. For instance. He's just one of a kind. He's perfect and upright. He walks with God. So Satan. Will be allowed to come in your life. And lie on your hands. Buffeted. For a season. You may be in heaven. On Friday night. I want to talk on. On problems in the spiritual life. About temptation. About trial. About buffeting. About misunderstanding. And all these things. Now you've got to remember this. The good book isn't very kind sometimes. It says. If you're a liar. He's your father. He's the father of life. A whisper disappears. The book doesn't heal us all the time. It's a two-edged sword. It cuts us to pieces. Carves us up. But whatever he's doing. He seeks. God seeks what. My broth to consume. And my daughter. Must be tested to be trusted. Faith grows exceedingly. It grows every time. I really trust. Faith is not just a. You won't need to exercise it. It reckons on God. It reckons on His wisdom. I learned a very beautiful thing. With my dear one. A little girl. I'd ever seen. You're thinking. You wound her up. The elder boy is born. Yes. Thank you daddy. Coming out of time. Daddy can I do. Never once have those children ever said. Wow. Never once. And all the time. They've come in the hall. I think that's beautiful. I sometimes say. And people don't like it. I've seen a lot of things around the world. How they make the bed. With a gorgeous design. But we came up from the back. And I looked at that big frame. And it was a long. Went round the other side. I never saw anything. Now we see through a glass. He obeys his mother. There's a mold. There's a certain basic thing. I think it's English. We're all made in the same mold. An American said. Some are moldier than others. We're really made in the same mold. Basically. There are certain things. Which are the same. Cannot reconcile the next place. And dear Dr. Saintly said. What is God doing? Some things are mystified. Faith has to be. Now Pauline was saying. Who is the first person in this place? The first person in this place. There's this man Abel. We don't know too much about him. What did he do? He built an altar. An altar means what? Sacrifice. And it means. I was reading a bit of Faber this morning. He got up early. And the thing like that. Offering worship. How beautiful. The size of thee must be. And yet he says. Father of Jesus. Love's reward. What rapture will it be? He prostrates before thy throne to lie. And gazed and gazed. Did you ever get on a mountain? Or you rode home and said. Well you couldn't explain it. It just requires explanation. Well I think that is the same. When you gaze on the Lord. You cannot. They baffle your vocabulary. You can't explain them. You don't have to explain them. But again. I suggest that you fence apart the day off. Not only for prayer. But apart of your prayer devotional life. You don't have to do nothing. Not even pray to God. Certainly not ask Him for things. Just love Him for who He is. For just who He is. It's going to take. We're going to need a new glorified body. Because if we saw God in His glory. These bodies would be blown to bits. He'd shatter us. But we're going to have new capacity. We're going to have a new body. A new glory. I forgot what I was going to say about Him there. Getting all that stuff off the track. Let's get back to what matters there. This basis of worship. Of adoration. We can get lost. I'm going back now to C.S. Lewis. He said. And I think he's one of the most brilliant men we've had in modern life. And he finished his message that one day. And there were hundreds of preachers there. You can tell the preachers in England. They wear the colors backwards away. The reason is most of them are going backwards away. But anyhow. The man of God. He finished his fantastic message that day. He started on. I believe in the resurrection of the body. The way he said it was so fantastic. He's a big, big man with an oval face. He just went to the pulpit. Put his hand on it. And then he went on. April is the time. And she turned back there with his giant hand. And she went to the horse. And then he backed off and he started cantering over the field. She looked at him and said. You're a beautiful woman. And she said. You've ridden a horse. Daddy was looking out of the window of the mansion. She told him she's ridden a horse. She didn't want to ride a horse anymore. Will you buy me that horse? Sure. Oh, Daddy. He said, but not yet. Why not? Well, this is wrong with your horsemanship. You don't sit erect enough. Number two, you don't carry a riding crop. Number three, you don't mount a dismount racially. Number four. That's all right. Keep looking when you straighten out your horsemanship. He said, sometimes I look over the balcony. You see, the big man can always humble himself. It's the fellow who doesn't know anything that knows everything. I look over the... I like that glorified body. And he says to me. Son, you stay down on earth a bit. And correct your lesson here. And correct that. And correct something else in your spiritual life. And when I see you've got it made. You've got as far as you can get down. And you're riding out very beautifully. You have need of what? What did he say? You have need of... Now maybe you haven't. But your husband may need a bit better. Do you have need of patience? Need of patience. How long did it take him to build it? Over a hundred years. About a hundred years. God starts working on Abraham when he's seventy-five. And he quits. Get the answer to my prayer. What were you thinking of? I've got a big problem. What is it? I've no patience. Would you pray God who'd give me patience? Yeah. He prayed and all he got. This man's really got an anointing. And he said, and you know what I need? Then the 10,000 tons of... That's right, he said, the tribulation. Oh. Oh. Oh, I thought if I prayed for patience, I'd wake up in the morning and say, why am I putting this dress on? He said, did you say amen? I said, I don't need this. Oh, man. I don't need this. Oh, I need this. If you ask God for this, he'll send you back. That'll work. We'd like God to send our gifts, all gift-wrapped, wouldn't we? Very often he sends them in dirty old brass. You know, if I didn't have this... You can have a little tongue... You can get rhinestones. But I understand the only way to really polish a good... The Lord's so busy running the universe, he says, the only way to shine you up, pastor, is have a deacon that'll rub you up every time you see him. Yes. He said they all do. No, he didn't say that, I did. I remember... This door, I used to see every day, it was a sermon to me, this doorplate that said, Dr. So-and-so, physician and so-and-so, in about a year, it was a... I thought you were Baptist, but apparently a Christian. That's all right. God knows you're being quiet. But it's funny, to say amen to the abrasive that matters, isn't it? God help us. When you're getting more than... When it's as dark as night, and you can still be asleep. By faith, let me wrestle, and he will perform with Christ in the vessel. They smile at the storm. It's amazing how stupid those disciples were, isn't it? You know, when the storm came up, they said, Master, tell us how not to be perished. How in the world can you kill it? How do you blow out the light of the world? You may as well stand in the back of the yard, beside a big shining tool like that, He does a very stupid thing. Sometimes we say, Lord, that's within the constitutional rights of the Christian to tell God he wants to be a saint. And if he's taking that man that way, and this man... If he adds blessing to somebody, and takes it from you, he's not dealing with that with you. That family left, he's dealing with you. There's something in your life he has to correct. You know the only way to read that? Amen. Amen. S-I-N-G-X. Saint, brother Saint, brother Saint. Brand new in Dallas. Praise the Lord. Thank you so much. Do you have a blanket? No, I don't have one, but the Lord... I used to pray, and the Lord said, just a minute. He said, Lord, I've given my blanket away. That's right. He said, there's a man down the street that hasn't given you money. Lord, this is all I have. I just... I told this to... You preached the other day, you said, praise his presence. You said to people, down the street, next to the door, you said, are you going to the conference? He said, well, I... That's all right, dear brother. See you're in the draft. Half an hour to... Did you tell people the other day? Well, uh... Hurry now, there are people who want to catch that train. Hurry, what do you... Yeah, yeah, yeah, I went around the room and said, hey, quickly. Well, he hadn't got a dime. Now, what did you do? Did he say, well, it was my imagination, and what do you do? Of course, it happens so quickly, it takes longer to take. I'll tell you what. I met a lady today... Amen. No, he said, I wasn't afraid, but I... Amen. He did that with this man, and you see... And you see, when the Lord told Abraham, when did God deliver Abraham? Not till he quit trying to deliver himself. As soon as he said, Lord, I'm beaten, I don't understand it. I lied, then I got in trouble, I did this, and... You see, so often we think we can do this. Now, we forget these matters. We don't know. Where is it? We don't know. What will people do? What do you know? Well, what are we going to do? Oh, darling, we've got a long way to go. I did one thing, don't I? We preached in the streets till midnight, and after, there was crowds coming out and moving, and he goes to her and says, we test you, we trust you. We have needed patience. Good. We needed some patience to do that, but didn't we? Yes. And you're in the way. You're going to fall No, they said, take them into my hand, and I looked around and you saw the flesh pot, and it's your problem if you have it too. You're responsible to God for your children, anyhow. Well, finish working with him. Well, God just started working with him. He was working on his present time, Sarah. Oh. Now, let me tell you something, Sarah. Are you going to turn it up? We're not going to dinner, are we? Oh, no, darling, we're not moving. Well, sweetheart, we're going to have a son. Well, we're a woman. Well, I guess. We're going to have a son. After all, there's a limitation. You know, faith isn't against reason, it's beyond reason. If you read the first chapter of Romans, it will tell you an awful lot about this wonderful man Abraham. I think, and I might even say this, maybe I'm putting you on the spot too suddenly, but I think he's the most quoted character in the New Testament. But he said what of this man? He said he didn't offer the promises. Oh, now, now, yes, yes. What a problem. They're still here, aren't they? He's getting full of them. Oh, the child of Thomas was Isaac. The child of the flag of Ishmael. The Ishmaelite. Oh, brother. Oh, darling. Oh, because of your father and marriage. Oh, Ishmael goes on. He's always fighting Isaac. He's older. One day Abraham comes in. we never allowed him to be humble. We mixed up so much of human nature with Talmud nature. Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, Abraham, Abraham is die, Tape line only saw that he was Ishmael Isaac, not that you moved slavery time they came and were buried there. They He didn't know what it was about. But it was a huge idea. How many times do you think that father killed that boy before he put it in the mouth, isn't there? Between here and there, and then he stops and he says, you shouldn't stay here. I say to people sometimes, now maybe you're easy to make fun of, but as you go through the thing, filling all the valleys, that's the case now, isn't it? No, no, no, you have to do it now. You have to get your rock, because that's the only thing you've got in the family. Lies in the middle. You say, why did John want to hide it? You've got the Abraham. You've got the darling of your heart, the boy you wanted. You and your uncle. The other day, I spoke about Abraham, and I said, I think that's about when he lifted the dead. And I said, I don't know. And he said, it was a very little boy. And one of the uncles said, I didn't think so. One of you stand up. He turns up on the mountain, he's going off. He disappeared until he found the boy. Oh, yeah. And then he said, will you go with me tonight? Every day, he goes back and forth. You know that the devil has not changed a word. And he doesn't want anybody to blame him. All he wants is to destroy it. Love, that's all he says. He has to be tested. He has to be tested. Faith, reckoning. That's all that he can do this morning, isn't it? Amen. Amen. Amen.
