Sermon Transcription
Well, we're going to continue today from where we left off last week with a message on John chapter 4 entitled Wells of Salvation We've been going through ten wells of salvation And we're basing our study out of John chapter 4 where Jesus met the woman at the well So we invite you to get your Bible and follow along as we come up through the wells of the Old Testament Up to John chapter 4 with Jesus at the well Well is called, I call it, the place of the covenant of eternal preservation When you come to Jesus and you drink of that well God has made a covenant with you that if you come under the blood of Christ you trust the blood of Christ for your salvation You will be eternally Preserved. A lot of people like to take doctrines and say no you can be saved, but you can't stay saved You have to keep yourself saved. God has saved you, yeah, by the blood of Christ, but you got to keep yourself saved This is the place of the covenant. When you come to the well, when you come to Jesus and you drink of the water of salvation You are saved. Now the problem is many come to the well and they look in and maybe even draw the bucket and even Stick the dipper in and play around, but they never really drink of the water of life Maybe even smell it But they never drink and thus they're never satisfied Hebrews 7 20 through 22 gives you more details on this covenant. Now, there's another place 24 Genesis 24 10 through 12 Get into some some Basically these first three dealt with unsaved. Now we go into wells that deal with the believer, things that God has for the believer Genesis 24 10 through 12 and the servant took ten camels of the camels of his master and departed for all the goods of his master were in his hand and He arose and went to Mesopotamia Unto the city of Nahar and he made his camels to kneel down without the city by a well of water At the time of the evening even the time that woman go out to draw water. Now we know the story this is Abraham sending the servant off to get Isaac a wife and And So he comes to this well of water in the evening and he prays that God would give him success and he said in 13 behold, I stand here by the well of water and The and he prayed and basically he prayed that the girl that came out when he asked for water she would Throw something else extra in and by that he would know and the extra was she said can I can I water your camels? Also, well Rebecca came and of course she said exactly that but he's praying at the well I call this the place of prayer. The well is the place of prayer when you come to Jesus and you drink for salvation You stay there and drink The reason so many are dry I believe is because it's not Jesus isn't the place of prayer He's a place maybe where they come and park once a week at church with others But he's the place where we continually pray we continually drink water, don't we So we continually pray Genesis 29 is another one one through three And believe it or not we are coming back to John chapter 4 it's just gonna take a while looks like it's another place 29 one through three then Jacob went on his journey and came into the land of the People of the east and he looked and behold a well in the field and lo there were three flocks of sheep lying by it This isn't the one he dug Three flocks of sheep lying by it for out of that well They watered the flocks and a great stone was upon the wells mouth and then there were all the flocks gathered And they rolled the stone from the wells mouth and watered the sheep and the stone again unto the wells mouth upon the wells mouth in the place then We got our we get our romantic stories and everything here, but let me give you the principle This well is the place of rest. How do you know? You say how do you know? Well look at the context and he looked and behold a well in the field the green pastures is the place of rest in the in the field of green pastures in the wilderness was the were The Unsaved were we were in wilderness wells. Here's one in the green pastures you say well, that's not enough Well, look, what are the sheep doing the three flocks of sheep lying by it? For out of that well, they watered the flocks and a great stone was upon the wells mouth This is the place of wrath rest the three flocks of sheep lying by this well, I Believe again, there's unrest and many hearts Lifes and whatever because they're not lying by the well drinking from other wells You drink from the go to church and drink from the world the well of the world at church. It's really pretty unsatisfying chapter 2 of Exodus remember when Moses here's another one Exodus chapter 2 when Moses had to flee from Pharaoh, what did he do? He fled and if you look at 15 He ended up at a well well now when Pharaoh heard this thing He sought to slay Moses But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh and dwelt in the land of Midian and he sat down by a well Now I'm giving you all this background. It's a lot of to it But we miss out a lot of the meaning of the New Testament teaching because we don't take the time to get the background You see the Jews understood this background Even this woman at the well knew a lot about because they talked they talked about the past they talked about the stories they talked about what God had done and they'd heard and rumors and and And if you go over there even today, even when I lived over in that part of the world They loved to tell you and many of that stuff comes out to be fairy tales basically and a lot of religions I used to when I was pastoring in Wyoming I had one man that led him and his wife actually I led his wife to the Lord first and when she got saved the The family got saved and he just loved to tell me these stories out of his old religion he was a Catholic and he had all these stories and They tell these stories. Well, they understood these stories in the meanings in the background. So when when we talk about a woman at the well We don't understand much. So what about Moses? He comes to a well and he sat down by a well now the priest of Midian has seven daughters and they came and drew water and fill the troughs to water their father's flocks and the shepherds came and drove them away and Moses stood up and helped them and watered their flock now this well We come through this is our next well in the scripture. It's the place of what? refuge There's something where do you go? Well, I go see my shrink I'll go see my counselor or I'll go see my pastor or whatever and it's okay Maybe to go see your pastor, whatever but first go to the place of refuge Go to Jesus many are peer dependent pastor dependent counselor dependent Whatever dependent they are they go to the place of refuge Moses fled he sat down and Something else here just a little side note and the shepherds came and drove them away in verse 17 But Moses stood up and helped them and watered their flock Those sign note on this drove them away many under shepherds under supposedly under Jesus as the shepherd are driving the flocks away without realizing that they are part there They are polluting the Word of God by using these other versions They are polluting their flock by giving them water to drink that is mixed with mud Basically untrue. I know a lot of people don't like this But I've looked at it and God has taught me that this King James Bible is the Word of God When you come to this and you drink of this word, you can be satisfied This I don't know how many times we've heard people say I'm just not getting much in my devotional time Not getting much at church, whatever and almost invariably. We'll ask him these two things. What Bible version are you using the church? What Bible version are you using? Well, you need to get you a good. Well, oh, no. No. No. No, I like this. I like this Oh, well, okay, whatever you want. There's another well Numbers 21 numbers 21 the next well 21 16 through 17. This is a neat one and From thence they went to beer that is the well where of the Lord spake and to Moses gathered the people together And I will give them water Remember when God who gave him water? I don't have time to go back and all this you can do it yourself They came back many times. You just need to come back simply back to Jesus drink and From this they went to beer that is the well where of the Lord spake unto Moses Gathers people together and I will give them water and then what were they supposed to do? Israel then Israel sang this song spring up. Oh, well Sing ye unto it Spring up. Oh, well sing ye unto it. I just can't take time to go into all of this But let me just say these two things This is the place of worship You come to the well to worship a Lot of people think you got to go to church to worship No, you come to the well you come to Jesus Jesus. No one can worship the Father unless they come to Jesus. Oh I've got my way. I don't need Jesus. Whatever. No, you have to come is the place of worship. This is personal worship How do I know that because they say sing? To the well spring up. Oh, well sing ye unto it. Do you sing to a thing? Do you sing to a thing we sing to a person we sing to the Lord This is a Teaching a symbolic teaching of a living God What did Jesus say to the woman at the well living life? And he had to take her from the physical to understand what he was teaching about the spiritual Sing to your well many people sing to their well They go out and sing to their car They go to work and sing to their work. They sing what you out of the abundance of the heart the mouth sinks Are you singing to your Savior? Are you singing to something else? 2nd Samuel 17 17 through 19 Is the place? With Jonathan and a him ass when it was a place of shelter and I'm not gonna Maybe okay. I'll go on over there. I'm thinking boy. It's taking a lot of time on this, but they were being pursued The King was after him Nothing new there The righteous are always seeming to the unsaved are always after them and so they come and they are sheltered in a well now Jonathan and a Him I has stayed by in Roy jail that they might not be seen to come into the city and a Wrench went and told them and they went and told King David nevertheless a lad saw them and told Absalom But they went both of them away quickly and came to a man's house and but who rim Which had a well in his court whether they went down and the woman took and spread a covering over the wells mouth and spread ground Ground corn their own and the thing was not known and you know the background on this but the well is the place of shelter Many times you come to Jesus. He's the shelter the position of security Let me say the last two quickly 2nd Samuel 23 15. This is a neat one remember when David and 2nd Samuel 23 15 he was fighting the Philistines and they were between him and Bethlehem and in Bethlehem. There was a well that had the sweetest water and then any old shepherd would know where the sweet water was where the good water was and When you get the good you don't want the bad and so they're fighting the Philistines in verse 12 He stood in the midst of the ground and defended it and slew the Philistines and the Lord brought a great victory Three and you went you know the history there, but in 15 it says in David Longed and said oh that one would give me to drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem which is by the gate and the three mighty men break through the host of the Philistines and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate and Took it and brought it to David nevertheless. He would not drink thereof but poured it out into the Lord This is one of those beautiful stories, but this basically has a lesson here The well is the place of satisfaction wires Many people running around looking for this and that's quick as they're not satisfied The cultists get people because they were not satisfied They were just in a church in a denomination or whatever and the Jehovah Witnesses and the Mormons Whatever grabbed people up because they never really got to Jesus once you get to Jesus. He satisfies doesn't he? It's the well of satisfaction I'm just going to mention one more. Well The well is the place of possession because it says in Proverbs I Don't think I have this unmarked, but it's the place of Possession it was the place of satisfaction to David, but it's the place of Possession because Solomon Old Solomon after all of his years and all of his lust and all of his Wives and everything interesting that he would come up and he'd say this in five. I should have marked this one Where are you supposed to drink? Are you supposed to drink? He said drink waters out of thine own cistern Basically The man is to be satisfied with his wife wife with her husband drink waters out of thine own Cistern out of your own. Well, you drink water if Jesus is your well and you have the water of salvation Why would you want to go drink out of another? Well, I was talking to somebody this week I like to didn't graduate from college because of this one course They said matter of fact had to move to another college because they wanted to take eight hours of a whole course I didn't think I needed it had nothing to do with the Bible preaching or anything like that It was zoology, which is zoology is fine, but I've already went to college went through the Air Force I was there to learn the Word of God. You got to have it Are you so I went to another school and got into that school and said you got to have philosophy to graduate and They were teaching pure old raw paganism and I clashed with that course. I clashed with the teacher teaching it because the spirit in me said don't drink out of this. Well, and It shot my average because I just I think I got a D out of it It just shot my I said a good enough average to graduate But it shot my average bad because I just rebelled against drinking out of that. Well Now here's the conclusion and Jacobs well was there and Jacob's well was there This well and that's another whole story. We won't go into that But it was purchased because when he came to land in Genesis 33 he purchased the land He purchased the land and then he dug his well Psyche or means purchased that's the meaning of it. And So when Jesus said if thou knewest the gift of God He said it's free But it's not cheap Jacob's well there. They were drinking there freely, but somebody had brought it Jacob had bought it he'd purchased it And so when Jesus said to the woman at the well and verse 10 If thou knewest the gift of God and who it is that said to thee give me to drink thou wouldest ask of him He would have given the living water lady. You can drink of the water of life freely But it's been purchased by a price and of course, he's not tolerant or like this But it was purchased by price. The well must first be purchased Our salvation has been purchased. Jesus is our salvation. He paid the price for our sin is purchased then the well must be possessed Many know that Jesus died that they do not possess him personally as their own. Well And you come over another portion Genesis 48 21 22 I won't go into that but the well must be was possessed It was Jacob's well and the enemy continually tries to come and get those wells So the well must be purchased project possessed before it can be enjoyed The reason many do not enjoy Jesus Jesus is a drudgery. Jesus is just a word he's a religion or he's a denomination that they got to go to their church or whatever they have no joy in their salvation because What? Jesus is really not their salvation. He's not there Well, the water that they're getting is somewhere else and they look at the well Purchased possessed must be enjoyed now these concluding statements As I said at the beginning sometimes it helps To know where you've been to understand where you're at and where you're going Jesus understood where this lady had been and where she was at and where she was going He used what was there handy and God is continually teaching us to use What is handy in witnessing to the lost this John chapter 4 is one of the greatest You know, I might get hung. I could get hung up here for weeks But we'll keep moving on as we go, but this is one of the greatest lessons of winning people now We'll come back to our dipper the Dentist if I thought about in time, I'd had you bring a gourd, you know that I'm driving down the highway You got one. Okay, we'll go get one kids like to see all this stuff we come up with We've had a snake on a pole. We've had a ladder leaning up against the wall Yeah, that'd be good to get the gourd but we're gonna get to our lesson now Granny's well, my old granny's. Well there with that Bucket granny didn't like it And I don't remember ever doing it but she wouldn't like it if I just take the bucket and Or stick my face down in the bucket, you know, you don't drink like that. Do you what do you need? You need a dipper, right? If if you can't find the dipper, that's okay the gourd we'll just use our dipper, but if Jesus is the well and Salvation is The water is salvation Who's the dipper? Remember the the woman at the well had you can't find it. It's okay That's all right. We'll just use this. We're almost done She left her water pot there So who's the water pot basically just say it like that who's the water pot who's the vessel who's the bucket I Was gonna look this one up. It's Aren't we the vessels of clay? Yes, Lord. I'm a vessel of clay. What is the problem with a vessel of clay? It can have cracks it can break. It's fragile And Got a leak in it. I am a cracked Vessel, I was gonna say crack pot, but that's too that's setting yourself up. Don't do that. I won't do that We are cracked Pots cracked vessels we leak we have to do what continually Refill it we drink out of it. You have to continually refill it What did the scripture say be ye continually filled Be not drunk with wine. We're in success, but be filled with the Holy Spirit. That means continually filled with Jesus Now when you come to this passage in John 4 and you got a little bit of background about wells and It helps you understand a little bit more now, let me ask say this the woman was the vessel To give the town a drink. She was the dipper the she left her water pot there she left her water pot there because she was the water pot now and She was filled with Jesus and she went back and she was a she was a cool drink of water To all those men that she went back and told him the message and the whole town. She was a cool drink of water She was a vessel full of the cool drink of water and they came out and they drank Straight from Jesus himself Unusual blessing and privilege to be able to do that now The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life the scripture says When you went through this week out of your mouth You gave water or you withheld water the mouth of a righteous man is a well of life Psalms 84 5 & 6 and that was Proverbs 10 11 Psalms 84 5 & 6 who passing through the valley of Baca Make it a well. God says that you and I as we pass through the valley of weeping. There are people weeping this week We will go through the valley of weeping, but we will make it what a Well, we will impart Jesus The interesting thing about the scripture says in 2nd Peter 2 17, these are wells without water Jesus warned about the cisterns the wells without water People come into the Pharisees. They were wells without water when people come to you and I this week. Will they find water or they find Me present and no water Listen to this verse neat verse Jeremiah 2 and verse 13 Need an extent in the sense that it is so pertinent to our day for my people have committed two evils They have forsaken me the fountain of living waters and hewed them out Cisterns broken cisterns that can hold no water and all these other Bible versions Even though they've got some water in there. They are not the pure water They're broken cisterns and they're getting worse and worse and worse as they try to make it they're leaving the blood out and leaving the name of Jesus out and things like that make it compatible and not so offensive and In the process they're doing these two things the church today This is why when I talk to that young man, our churches are so bad off and I say I I'm not going to put us above anybody else it's because And we're trying and striving to listen to the Lord and serve the Lord And we are missionaries and we are servants anybody that comes into our fellowship to be a part of us We are missionaries and we are servants. We're not pew sitters There's no room for pew sitters in the church when we have pew sitters, then we Then we get to the point to be men pleasers and we have to keep them happy to keep them present in the process We do these two things we will forsake the Lord and we will hew out cisterns They have forsaken me the fountain of living waters and hewed them out cisterns broken cisterns that can hold no water when they come and they Dip into our life There's nothing that satisfies the unsaved but when they dip into our life and Jesus is filling our life and they dip into our life and Jesus is what they drink out of our life. It satisfies them or either make them angry if They're already satisfied with their filth On your journey through Samaria, isn't it? Interesting acts 1 8 and you shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost has come upon you and you shall be witnesses Unto me in Jerusalem and in Samaria and unto the uttermost part of the earth. We're in our Samaria our Jerusalem Or our uttermost part of the earth wherever you're at. The final question is on our journey through Samaria We will meet a thirsty soul Will they find water in our well Let's pray Like the woman at the well father many are thirsty and our hearts cry out to you that no matter all the problems whatever kind of problems we have or persecutions Or trials that we will continually be a well of living water That Jesus will be flowing through our lives Lord, thank you for speaking to us today. Thank you for ministering. Thank you for challenging us and We pray for any that are dry wells That they would recognize that dryness is because there's no life there there's no living water and if they're unsaved we pray that They would cry out to the Lord to save them. I don't know why father We're so content to be proud and pharisaical and pretend Pretend like our well is full of water when really we're dry as a desert. Thank you that you can satisfy And for any that need Jesus, we just ask that they would call out Call out to him whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved and for us Lord Maybe you've met us today and you found us a little dry And all of the things that we're going through It's easy for us to get into the barrenness of emptiness as it's been said or the barrenness of dryness What are we here for if it isn't to make Christ? No Then we'll be making ourself. No Thank you for speaking to us and ministering in Jesus name Are you thirsty? Isaiah said for I will pour water in Reporting what the Lord has said. He said for I will pour water upon him. That is thirsty and Floods upon the dry ground. I will pour my spirit upon thy seed and my blessing upon thy offspring Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved It's time to repent and cry out to the Lord that you are dry And empty and come to Jesus who is the well of life the living water comes From the Lord Jesus Christ, why not call? Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved Why not call out to the Lord today and he will save you well, we're praying that the Lord will bless you and that the Lord will keep you and That the Lord will make his face shine upon you and that the Lord will be gracious unto you and that the Lord will lift up his countenance upon you and That the Lord will give you peace God bless you my friend
