Walking With God - Part 1
Loran Helm

Reverend Loran William Helm (1916–2006). Born on February 3, 1916, in Parker City, Indiana, Loran Helm, often called Brother Helm, was an evangelical pastor and author renowned for his book A Voice in the Wilderness, which chronicles his ministry’s journey. Raised in a modest family, he felt a divine call to preach at a young age, experiencing a profound baptism of love and power early in his career that shaped his Spirit-led approach. In 1934, he married Florence Martha Spence, and they had three children, raising them amid his growing ministry. Helm’s preaching emphasized self-denial, obedience to the Holy Spirit, and pursuing revival, drawing thousands to his “Waiting on God” meetings across the U.S., where attendees sought divine guidance and unity. In the mid-1960s, he co-founded Revival For Our Day (RFOD, later Found Ministries), a nonprofit supporting his itinerant evangelism, with sermons like “Seek Ye First” (1995) and “Being Led of the Holy Spirit” (1978) preserved online. A passionate supporter of Israel, he led over 28 pilgrimages to the Holy Land and ministered in Europe and Africa. Helm authored no other major works but inspired a network of churches through RFOD’s newsletters. He received an honorary Doctorate of Divinity in the late 1980s. Helm died on June 13, 2006, in Parker City, saying, “That which God begins never ends.”

Sermon Transcription
Lord, hallelujah, I forgot myself where I was and just sing to Jesus, folks, so get on board, we'll take a little trip here. Heavenly love, bring it on down Heavenly love, shine it all around Heavenly love, bring it on down Heavenly love, shine it all around Ain't got no time for worries of this lifetime Ain't got no time for cares of this world But love, joy and peace, truth and understanding Now flood this poor, poor soul of mine Heavenly love, bring it on down Heavenly love, shine it all around Heavenly love, bring it on down Heavenly love, shine it all around The worries of this world are meant to upset you Along with doubt they're brought to take your faith and praise But if you press on through and let nothing distract you You'll find it on the other side, heavenly love awaits It was like a refreshing morning All that was like heaven coming down It was like a help in the time of need It was a blessing to me, a thrill to me Brother Wright was exhorting us and we were so happy Stirred up about going with you And then son John you said for him to sing 175 And oh, oh how it did bless us Oh this is a great, great, great hymn The message of it is so great it feeds me Lifts me, inspires me, blesses me, encourages me, feeds me I don't know what all to tell you But I'm surely thankful about it I am happy With thee, hallelujah Glory be to Jesus Now father we confess that we have felt so weak since we came in the pulpit tonight That we were crying to have strength enough to make it in this hour And so therefore quicken us for the burden of the church is so great The burden of the church throughout the world is so immense, so heavy that we can't explain it So I pray for strength, power of the Holy Ghost To know thy will and to be able to proceed following thee The way has never gotten old walking with thee The way has grown better, higher and sweeter, richer, fuller With wonder And with joy As I've walked with thee Dying, dying, perishing with every ambition of earthly areas But climbing the mounds of my purpose and thy will has been true I thank thee for the joy that I have had with you Adventure, romance and the happiness But it has been rather at times lonely When we would look in the churches where you have had me to go over the world To see if I could find a few people there that was hearing your voice and following you I thank you for the few that you've helped me to find That have been a consolation to me And a strength and a blessing in the holy fellowship of the saints And it has been like heaven on earth for me To be led by the witness of the Holy Spirit And to hear what the Holy Ghost says in my heart, Jesus As I look to thee by faith We want to give thee thanks that we're living in the United States of America Where we have this freedom and liberty Where our forefathers suffered much that we might be partakers of this opportunity Opportunity I'm aware of the fact that we could easily lose sight of this and take it for granted I beseech thee tonight for those in nursing homes who are lonesome and weary Been looking for their children to come the past few days, today and yesterday Past weeks and months And the children haven't been able to get there Some because of work or sickness Some because of afflictions, some because of finances and then sometimes just had forgotten I pray for those in the prisons and the jails That those there will be willing to repent and truly seek thee and follow I pray for those in the hospitals tonight who are in dire suffering I remember suffering myself and was glad when it was ended So we bring those suffering ones that they could have relief, healing and deliverance Now tonight we want to remember the new converts that they will not grow weary But that they'll see the power of thy spirit working in we in the churches That they will have spiritual milk and grow up in the stall of thy purpose And walk out in the field of the opportunities to witness for thee and to walk in light as thou art in light I pray in the name of Jesus for the lost tonight That would be in hell in the morning if they're not saved, if they were to come And they said that whosoever's name is found written on the book of life And we want to be sure that we have our names written in thy precious book of life And we know we can't write them down there, we can't influence to get it written We can't work it to that place but we must with all of our heart truly seek thee And when we with all of our heart truly seek thee to find thee, thee writes our name down in that book Because our sin to forgive him through Jesus Christ, his blood is applied to our heart And when the heavenly father sees that then thee dips thy precious finger in the blood of the lamb and writes our name down In that precious book of life Lord we thank thee for the way you've helped us these previous seven services Now this is the aid service and it's important And we're as dependent and as needy tonight as we were the first night and that was extreme dependence upon thee So we humbly beseech thee for the work of the Holy Spirit, in Jesus name we ask, amen Jesus said except you repent you shall all likewise perish And he spoke that to all of us that we need to repent And when we repent of our sins and are truly changed and transformed And God has blotted out our transgressions through the blood of Jesus Christ Then we begin a wonderful wonderful journey It's called walking with God It is called walking with the king Now in the old testament it reads that in Genesis 5 22 And Enoch walked with God, thank heaven, and Enoch walked with God And in Genesis 6 9 it says Noah was a just man and perfect in his generation and Noah walked with God Malachi 2 6 says the law of truth was in his mouth and iniquity was not bound in his lips He walked with me in peace and equity and did turn many away from iniquity Revelation 3 4 thou hast a few names even inside us Which have not defiled their garments and they walk with me in white Because they are worthy that's revelation 3 4 So when we are transformed and changed we began to walk with God We start walking with Jesus Christ Now if you've been walking with him I'll tell you you're really happy about that you're really excited If you have known what it is to walk with Jesus following Christ going with God You are a person Of a rare precious experience And this is given to all men the opportunity of walking with him And we walk with him by following him And we follow him by the word of God in prayer We're going to walk with him we're going to meditate upon the word in our heart And we're going to pray and commune with the Lord Jesus Christ and become sensitive to his will When you're walking with God Now My Sunday school teacher That taught me in 1923 In the little Methodist church Where I have been For 50 About 56 years She taught me about Jesus Just like my mother and my father She's a humble woman But the last 20 years of her life She suffered She never Talked about her suffering But her Fingers and Hands were all twisted And her body was twisted Her limbs were twisted And while she was Seated in the wheelchair I never heard her complain one time And she never said Lauren I just don't feel good Not once Lauren I just feel badly She never told me that She never told me that She had many tests and trials But she never Talked to me about them I recall About 30 years ago 25, 30 years I would go and pray with her Share with her I'd start sharing with her About where the Lord was guiding me Where he was leading Where I had been sent by Jesus And God had guided me And I would share with Irene About it and she would become Very happy And I've forgotten how Many times I had been There with her, praying with her Her son Went to school with me He started the first day with me And was with me on the 26th Of April, 34 When I received my diploma He had open heart surgery about 6 years ago And he's gone now So I miss him Miss him quite a bit But she said to me After I had been there A number of times Lauren When I see you going down the street here In your car I see Jesus right with you She said he's right with you I can see him I see Jesus with you as you go down the street I thought that was so wonderful I thought it was so great That my Sunday school teacher That began teaching me About the Lord Jesus Christ in 1923 Could tell me 25, 30 years ago A quarter of a century After that and more When you go down the street here Lauren, I see Jesus with you She's in heaven now When we were on the west coast F.H. Lacey One of the great Christians Of the last many years He had called many places While we were there in their home in Pasadena To get ministers To have me come for services I didn't ask him to do it, but he wanted to So I just trusted I was just trusting Well after we were there a few weeks Jesus told me to leave there On the 25th of January I'm talking about Walking with God You see when he told me to go The last, in November He said you're going to go And you'll leave here on the 28th of December He told me that The 15th of November In 59 He said you will go To California And you'll start on the 28th of December So I told my wife I said oh Jesus has told me we're going to start On the 28th of December And she rejoiced with me I was at Dr. Ewing Ross' home When the Lord told me that And so the day before we started Two days before And the day before You know I didn't have enough money to buy a quart of oil And a tank full of gas And I knew I'd have to have $500 To go out there And back I knew I'd have to have that much You know for the motels And the food and the expenses And here I didn't have anything But yet Jesus had told me Six weeks before I was to leave I would leave on the 28th of December I'm talking about walking with God Going where God wants you to go This is a practical everyday experience Trusting Him Waiting upon Him You see When you're going with the Lord You know when I started out with Jesus I didn't know how I was going to make it From one day to the next In the life of trust You don't know how In the life of trust that's where you are all the time You don't see out there It's right there The life of trust You just know when you get there what you're going to do Except the Holy Spirit Reveal it to you in advance Now that's a Wonderful privilege to have the Holy Spirit Reveal something to you in advance Otherwise you're right here all the time That's as far as you can see at the end of your nose Right there That's as far as you go That's the life of trusting is That you do not try To be endeavoring to work this out Because when we endeavor To work it out We are not really trusting We are trying In the self life In the body to get the songs Get to places But the Holy Spirit revealed to me By the witness of the Holy Ghost That I would leave with my wife For the West And I would be in a revival meeting In Pasadena At F.H. Lacey's church And we didn't have any money But we had it The day we left And we left on the 28th of December And had the money to go But I was sick I was sick I had such a cold And I'd sweat and perspire And I wouldn't chill so much But oh I'd get so Damp And I'd just persevere on And my wife she wouldn't say How are you feeling She'd just keep praying I'd say I'm trusting And so we started And here I was with this awful cold And this ability To sweat and perspire That's a miserable feeling going down a road In the winter time And we just had to pray Pray us through the first hundred miles Had to pray us through the second hundred miles Had to pray us through the third hundred miles And had to pray us through the fourth hundred Just keep praying That's the only way we made it I made it by praying See he had revealed to me I would leave So remember that a lot of times When you don't feel good You can't go by that We left the day he told me But I was ill Didn't have much strength Runny nose Cold Coughing and so on And we didn't talk about that We just talked about the fact He said that he'd be with us And we're on our way We didn't look at the circumstance We looked at the sun Looked like it was going to snow all the time I learned this later The Palermo brothers left Chicago For Los Angeles Three weeks before we left And they had snow 1700 miles So we get through the first day We get in the motel And I've changed my pajamas I've changed my garments And I try to rest The devils were raging The powers of hell were fighting with such fury Just accusing me, buffeting me But I'd say praise the Lord, glory to God Hallelujah, by God's grace I'm making it When you walk after Jesus You walk by faith See a lot of people think When you walk with God that it's easy It's a dying It's a dying I've been walking with God for 46 years Last January I'll soon be 47 years old I'll be in the Lord in just a few weeks God helping me The Lord healing me, protecting me, providing for me I always want to say that It's by His grace you know, really Every breath, every heartbeat See it's by His mercy And here I was the second day When we got into Oklahoma Oh it looked so dreary Oh so terrible Oh the waitress I heard her say It's going to snow, looks like it They say it's going to snow Here we were, trying to make our way And here the snow was threatening We needed help We got through that day Oh how I needed my body Next day was just about the same The third day Driving, driving, driving Because the Lord revealed I was to go Walking with the Lord He reveals by the Holy Spirit What you're to do What I'm to do See He revealed to me That I was to be here at this time And this is the seventh night The eighth service And He has helped us What it looked to me like when I came in I had such a great need When I came through those doors The first night of this lovely sanctuary That you had trusted Jesus for And Jesus came and helped me To preach to you About few there be that find this life Well we made it through the third day I began the fourth day I began to get better I began to improve Cold began to fall off The infection began to depart I began to become stronger I was almost there That was encouraging We arrived there by God's grace Started the meeting in Pasadena The Holy Spirit came I didn't know any of the people Didn't know the pastor, didn't know the ushers Didn't know the main men of the church Didn't know anyone But Brother and Sister Lacey They had prayed for twenty years That they'd be a minister and his wife That God would send to them And they knew scores and hundreds of them From New York City to San Francisco In many states And we were the privileged ones The Lord saved people He healed people, he lifted people He blessed people I remember we came in from the study We came over here and I said to the pastor He was one of the most beautiful black brothers That I have Oh he is a handsome man, he loves Jesus And I said to him I said you have an infection Jesus just told me He looked at me And I said Jesus just told me You've had this infection for twelve years But you have stomach trouble too It's right there So I prayed for his stomach trouble And asked Jesus to take that out But I said we're going to have to pray for this other infection That you've had for twelve years When I walked in the pulpit the next night He said oh my brother, my brother I know now what you're talking to me about He said when I was in Vietnam When I was over there in those jungles He said they gave me a pair of boots In the army And he said I got a fungi disease And it's all over my feet and ankles I've had it for twelve years We had such a marvelous time there That he wanted to go home with us And so did the head usher I said we want to go home with you Oh I said we want to go home with you That's what they said The pastor and the head usher of the church You see we were walking with Jesus And had such a wonderful time That they just wanted to go walking with us Yes they wanted to go walking with us I couldn't blame them No I didn't blame them at all Because we had such a great time In the Lord Jesus Christ Walking with God, walking with Jesus Trusting the Lord With all of our heart Oh what a masterful adventure that was Jesus encouraged people Saved people, lifted people Healed people, blessed people And he Said that Enoch walked with God Enoch walked with him After I was there so many days With my wife The Holy Spirit said you will leave here On January the 25th Well I thought we might be there for weeks And months He said you're leaving here The 25th day of January Just like he revealed to me By the Holy Ghost that we would leave Back in November the 15th On the 28th day of December Now just all of a sudden in prayer He said you're going to leave So I said get your things ready We're going home We drove hard the 25th, the 26th The 27th, 28th, 29th Came into my father's home and he said Son you're on time, call the mortuary Your old Sunday school teacher just died And they want you to preach a funeral He got me back to preach a funeral The one that taught me about Jesus When I was a little boy They wanted me to preach a funeral I was back on time to tell the great story Of how Jesus can save Yeah He liked it so well That the son wanted me to preach The father's funeral too Bob Meeks liked it so well That he had known me since I was a boy But he didn't know me until that funeral I was under such anointing of God I'll tell you he was a stock buyer He sold stock to my father But he didn't know me But that day God broke him all up He became my brother And his wife loved me Oh we were close friends from then on Because God helped me To speak about the kingdom And he felt the power Yes sir it was a great experience And Bob Robert Meeks Who was a man known for miles and miles Became my friend Because God had me on time To preach my Sunday school teacher's funeral And tell him about the kingdom of God I'll tell you while you're walking With the Lord he's getting things arranged for you Amen Well this is exciting To know when you're walking with Jesus You're on time See Reverend McMurrin Wanted me to come to Wilshire, Ohio Ohio in 1965 He wanted me to come then And the Lord said You can't go now So I had to get a hold of him And tell him I cannot come to your place I have to wait a year I have to wait one year When you walk with the Lord You don't go where you have opportunity You don't go through every door That is open You don't go at every opportunity When you're walking with God You do what he says no more and no less See he wants to teach He wants to teach every one of us He wants all of us to walk with him He wants to meet every one of us By the Holy Spirit All of us But we have to be broken inside We have to die here Really die Keep dying It's a continual death But it's ever coming alive It's ever coming to joy and glory In him Even though you have to die And not do your own will But do his will So I had to say Brother McMurrin And I want to tell you that Reverend Paul McMurrin Has a Christian Like a little child He's so childlike When I arrived there one year later His wife got sanctified on Sunday morning And I'll tell you if you ever saw a preacher As happy as he was It would be wonderful to see them He was so happy he wanted everybody to know his wife was sanctified When they got to the district meeting He wanted the district superintendent to know his wife was sanctified He wanted the preachers all to know His wife was sanctified And he wanted everyone to know his wife was sanctified And they put him out of the church He wrote me a while back Brother Everett and I'll tell you I think he's written me twice in the last few years And he told me about something that meant so much to him It was a very precious Encouraging letter But if I would have come The year before when they invited me I could have been ahead Of God's time When they invited me to come to Logansport They wanted me to come One year before I was supposed to go And I had to write the pastor and tell him That I couldn't come for one year Church wasn't ready for revival Had to wait It stirred people up But one year later he let me come He sent me the next year 1964 And when we arrived there There was a big man Weighed 300 pounds That was soured on the church Hurt with the people Hurt with the ministry, hurt with the laity And wasn't going to go to church He'd been in the church 22 years Been disappointed with the church That's what he's told me hasn't he? You've heard him tell me Probably And I didn't know him I knew nothing of him But he came To the Parsons one morning About 10 o'clock And he thought I was Lemoyne Wright And I wasn't I was Loren Helm And the year before he was living in Winchester, Indiana But that year he was transferred and got into Logansport Back home with his folks And I was on time for him And I preached to him And shared with him that day For somewhere between two and a half And three and a half, four hours And I was preaching as if I were preaching to 22,000 people Just as hard as I could Oh he was just rolling out of me I wish I were able to preach tonight like I preached to him And I said let's pray And I started praying and he watched me while I prayed I didn't know it, but he said he did He said I watched you And he said I knew no man could pray that fast and that good Without God helping him I said I knew it God give me the anointing God give me the anointing And I could just roll out of me And I said it's a wonderful time of the Holy Ghost praying He said I know a fellow couldn't make that up And he came to church He told his mother he would not come But he came that night And I asked him to take me to the post office to mail three letters And that night I couldn't get out of his car I'm talking about walking with God See the Lord showed me That I was to ask him to take me to the post office See when you walk with Jesus He reveals what he wants you to do How does he do it? That's a mystery You have to learn from conversion on See if we don't learn all of our lessons At conversion And the next step You see if I'm not obedient at conversion And the next minute, the next five minutes, the next ten minutes If I miss any of those leadings Then I don't start walking with God You see after conversion If I fail the first leading or the second leading Then I have to repent of those leadings Before then I am taught the next time How to begin to take the first step after Jesus This is why very few people Have walked with Jesus through the ages Is that when we get saved When we ask him to forgive us of our sins And we start reading the Bible We think that's it Well that's wonderful, that's a part of it But that is just a little part of it The big part of it is putting into practice What the Bible says And that's to be sensitive to the voice of Jesus And follow him That is obeying him inward death This teaches us how to begin to walk with Jesus Now some people start But they let the flesh Gear them off into fanaticism Or radicalism Or wildfire Or some thing that they made up Or thinks pretty good Somebody has trouble in their brain They have a headache Or they have a tumor And in the name of Jesus of Nazareth For the glory of God, behold, be healed Be healed for Jesus' glory Amen Isn't it wonderful he can tell me that quick It's all over So he wants us to trust him And obey him And do exactly what he says No more and no less Now where was I boys A minute ago when I started out here I said Jesus has revealed To me That Joseph is to take me To the post office What he told me For him to take me to the post office I didn't know what was in store I want to tell you something When God reveals him to you You don't know what all the wonderful things He has in store for you The half cannot be fancied on this side The golden shore So he took me to the post office And here we were Talking to you about doing God's will Walking with God Walking in his light See Enoch walked with God He walked with God He walked with God And he wants all of us to walk with him It's God's will That we walk with him That we follow Jesus Following Jesus is walking with God Following Jesus is walking with God When we returned to the Parsonage And I began to reach for the handle Of the car around 11, 11, 15 To get out So I could go in and lie down and rest I don't think I was near as tired That night as I am tonight But the hernias Were breaking loose in my stomach I was in suffering But I went to reach for the The handle And the Holy Spirit said No, you're not getting out of the car Now if it hadn't been for him teaching me How the Holy Spirit operates I wouldn't have known what he was telling me It took me I've been walking with him 47 years, month after next It required Years of walking with God Before he taught me How the Holy Spirit operates In these areas So when I was reaching for The handle of the car To get out, to go in the Parsonage To lie down and rest and pray He said No Can't get out Now what if I hadn't recognized that By God's grace Now he said tragic, now that's right Because their home was just ready for The end I didn't know it He told me when he got with me in Salina, Kansas the next year or so He told me the things he was in And his wife didn't know anything about it See he was such a shrewd man Such a smart man One of the most shrewd men One of the smartest of men One of the most able men There isn't much of anything he can't do And he's one of the most wonderful missionaries That's in the hills and the mountains Of Tennessee I wouldn't be surprised if his ministry now Is going to mount with the pastors Of the churches His ministry may be in the hills And the mountains of Tennessee May be equivalent to most of the pastors Or some of them or all of them See I didn't know him But I loved him just like I love all of you No difference No difference And here we are In his car And can't get out But see If it weren't for the Holy Spirit walking with God Teaching me how the Holy Ghost works How the Holy Ghost operates I would have got out the car Went God in the room Went to bed Had prayer Scripture first and prayer And got into the bed I couldn't do it He said no you can't get out of this car So I said my dear brother I just met him That day I didn't know him He didn't know me He didn't know anything about me He probably thought I was a different kind of a fellow Probably did Because I was very happy And I said I can't get out of your car Ha ha ha ha ha He looked at me I said I can't get out He said can you go home with me I said yes sir He said well let's go And he started the car And we started for home Now this is walking with Jesus Walking with Jesus Following Jesus Going with God And so we went home We got out And he's marveled to this day I wish he were here to tell you He's told me more than once When I call him You ought to be on the phone with me Have any of you ever been on the phone to hear him talk to me Oh dad how are you Do you know how much I love you I said no I don't I know it's a lot These boys will tell you it's a fact If I'd call him now in the office And say I need you in West Virginia Get here as soon as you can He'd leave everything and start Just like Jerry would Call him and say I need you now Jesus is helping me They'd start Just as soon as they could get packed and get ready And they wouldn't put a whole lot in They'd just start out Because Jesus has put such love In the hearts of his children Well we went in the house He said what would you like Would you like Something to drink like ice water Or orange juice Or something I said well I believe it'd be alright I might have a little orange juice Lord help me Well he says I wasn't sure we had any He went to the refrigerator And he just had almost a glass full left Just enough for me And he brought A nice pitcher full of water And he would drink one glass And he'd drink two glasses And then he'd drink three glasses And he'd drink four glasses And he'd drink five glasses About the first two hours I think he must have been drinking Oh somewhere before I'd say four or six glasses Of water or more He drank water And water And I drank water Because I like water And I told him about Jesus And how the kingdom of God Is so precious And his wife was upstairs Because she's a school teacher And she was in bed and she wondered why He'd bring a stranger home at nearly midnight And she dressed As if she were going to school And came down the steps To meet a strange man That she never saw in her life And we were in a meeting The glory of God fell upon us And I was preaching, exhorting, and singing And preaching, exhorting, and singing And the more I preached God helped me preach and sing The more light she became The light began to come all over her face She had her degree in the Bible college in Cleveland She was a graduate of Marian College And she had her college degree In the Bible and I don't know what all And in about two hours She was healed She was healed of six things In her body and I said You feel better than you have felt in eight years She said I certainly do Her face was shining I said Joseph look at her face I said the Shekinah glory is all over her face And the Shekinah glory of our God in Jesus Christ Was all over this handmaid's face And she was just shining That song you were singing See how that first song goes into this sermon Oh Jesus did just shine And she was shining, shining, shining The light was on her face And for eleven years she needed a servant of God To come and tell her About the kingdom of God And all the burdens she had borne over the world She had borne burdens for the mission Fields, the lost, the called, the chosen She had burdened, burdened She didn't know what all was wrong with her Joseph said he didn't know what all she was in So the Lord you see began to teach me What all this precious handmaid Had been bearing for eleven years Burden for many souls Over the earth And then this would teach Joseph how to understand her And you see after he got to the Lord that night See he found Jesus on the eighth day of December That day That's when he met Jesus He was changed and their honeymoon began And they've come closer And closer They are so They're just so close now That they rejoice wonderfully About how wonderful Jesus Rescued their marriage Brought their marriage from the rocks Where it was just about to tumble And brought them into such beauty Because Jesus was leading We were walking with God To Christ, to the Holy Ghost And the Lord came in that house And changed
